The sales person, Sam was very through in his presentation and very detailed.. They were able to work with me on a date and showed up as scheduled . The installers were communicative and very neat. They even finished earlier in the day by bringing more help in as I had an unexpected appointment arise. I was shown pictures of the pre and post insulation to verify what was done. I would recommend them !

The project manager Bryan Zailer came and gave me the solution and quote for my insulation project which was very objective and competitive. Bryan himself seems very experienced and extremely responsive in communication. He promised to finish work before some date and delivered 100%. I would definitely recommend them.

Ahmad was the quickest to give me a quote, works with a BayREN inspector to get rebates, so I wound up selecting his company because after rebates it would be the cheapest. I had an install date for about 3 weeks away, returned from vacation a day early to move everything away from the walls by 3 ft on a Sunday for a Tuesday appointment. Got a call that Monday that his crew was out with COVID (totally understandable, since I myself and many coworkers had been out with COVID about that time). Rescheduled for 8 days later (2 of those days were because of my schedule). His crew arrived on time and were very friendly and helpful reexplaining the process (since it had been over a month since I got the quote). They were fast and efficient. Sadly, once they had a check in hand Ahmad was terrible about returning texts. I had three simple questions (rebate inspection, dry time for spackle, why a quarter of one wall didn't get insulated), took a day or more but he returned an answer to one of the questions, asked a clarifying question about one and ignored the other question. No response to my response to the clarifying question. When I was going through with the BayREN inspector I found that the installation crew completely annihilated a light fixture in the closet of the attic access. I didn't even bother to try to get a hold of them to get it replaced since I would waste more time getting no response than I would heading to a home improvement store to buy and install a replacement. Come to think about it I probably should only rate a 4 star because I'm worried about damage I haven't found yet, and also annoyed at how little of my exterior walls wound up with insulation, but I don't want to lose all this typing.

Project: A damper needed to be installed between the furnace and one duct line leading from it. In order to make sure all registers fed by the duct line were controlled by the damper, it had to be positioned as high upstream as possible. The job was complicated by an unclear vision that this should have been the original plan. This was not entirely due to the technicians. The cost of the job was calculated based upon breaking into the ceiling and accessing a substantial amount of duct. After about 5 ft of ceiling was exposed, the owner realized that any dampers installed in the exposed duct would be too far downstream to control nearby upstream registers. The job was re-purposed at that point, with the help of a more experienced technician than the one who designed the original job. A small section of the ceiling much closer to the furnace was opened up, and a damper--designed and constructed by the experienced technician--was installed through a slit made in the duct. The damper could be controlled from the outside by a lever, and would be able to determine heat flow to the registers that had been providing too much heat to the affected bedroom. HVAC Guru reduced the job cost by 11.5% to reflect the reduction in labor from the original invoice. The technicians were courteous, responsive and professional. Administrative personnel were courteous, responsive and professional. Some detailing for the damper control, and testing under real conditions (winter weather) are all that remain for the experience to be considered completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is insulation?

+

Insulation is material that provides a barrier within a home’s walls, ceilings, and floors to regulate temperature and noise. If your home gets overly hot in the summer and cold in the winter, it’s likely not insulated properly.

Insulation efficiency is measured by R-value, which determines how resistant different types of insulation are to heat flow (or energy loss). R-values are measured by inch of thickness. The higher the R-value, the better the performance and the higher the price.

How much does insulation cost?

+

Our project data lists insulation costs between $1,400 and $6,300, but your final price will depend on the type of insulation you choose, its R-value, and how much you need.

  • Fiberglass insulation: $0.30 – $1.50
  • Blown-in insulation: $1 – $2
  • Spray foam insulation: $0.50 – $2
  • Radiant insulation: $0.20 – $1
  • Rigid board insulation: $0.25 – $1

Luckily, insulation is one of the best investments you can make in your home—it has an ROI of at least 100%, meaning you’ll likely make back what you spend in a few years or so.

What is insulation made of?

+

Insulation is made of many different materials, which can also impact the R-value needed for energy efficiency.

  • Fiberglass: The most common insulation material made from glass. Fiberglass is a skin and lung irritant, so you’ll need to wear gloves and clothing when working with fiberglass insulation.
  • Cellulose: Made from recycled paper products, plus borate for fire and insect resistance.
  • Foam: Made from polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane plastic. You can also install cement-based foam insulation using rigid foam boards.
  • Mineral wool: Made of fire-resistant rock wool, a mix of natural materials, or slag wool, made from a molten metal product.
  • Natural fibers: Made from various recycled natural materials, including cotton, sheep’s wool, and straw.

Where is insulation in a house?

+

If your attic is unfinished or you’ve ever demolished an interior wall, you might notice batt or spray foam insulation between the studs. Putting insulation between your walls and floors helps keep your home comfortable and your energy costs down. In addition to walls and attics, you can install insulation in your garage, in floors above vented crawl spaces, and basements.

  • Garage Insulation: $0.50 to $1.25 per square foot
  • Floor and crawl space insulation: $1 to $5 per square foot
  • Basement insulation: $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot
  • Wall insulation: $1 to $4 per square foot
  • Attic insulation: $1,500 to $6,000
  • Roof insulation: $1,500 to $4,500 or more

What are the different types of insulation?

+

There are a few types of home insulation, and they all are made of different materials— most commonly, fiberglass, cellulose, and foam. Insulation includes these materials in the following forms:

  • Loose-fill: Also called “blown-in,” loose-fill is sprayed into wall cavities, attics, and other oddly-shaped areas using special equipment. This insulation is usually made of fiberglass, cellulose, or mineral wool.
  • Batts: An affordable insulation blanket best for unfinished spaces, such as between framing, studs, or joists. They come in pre-cut sections suitable for DIY installation and are mostly made from fiberglass, though other versions are also available.
  • Rolls: Similar to batt insulation, but comes in rolls. Its make-up leaves less chance for gaps between sections and is more efficient than other types.
  • Foam board: One of the most popular insulation types that can be used almost anywhere in your home. Foam boards also have a high R-value.
  • Spray foam: Expands and hardens to fill gaps, small and large. Can be closed-cell or open-cell, but closed-cell has a higher R-value, making it more expensive per square foot.
  • Radiant barriers: Does not reduce heat flow but directs heat away from the home instead. Radiant barriers are DIY-friendly and affordable, but they won’t be as effective in the winter months.
