"I had a tree die a couple summers ago and it was too precarious to leave through the winter.  It was a very, very large tree that lost a 300 lb limb in a recent wind storm. I knew that the tree had to come down and John was very, very responsive.  The tree was removed within 10 days of my inquiry.  The tree was removed and all the debris was taken away from my yard and my neighbor's.  The tree was in a difficult space to get to (which is why it wasn't removed before), including cable and power line, much landscaping, fire pits, and fences and John was able to get to the tree without leaving any damage to the yard at all. His price was also $2,000 less than the next closest estimate, so i was a bit worried, but he didn't charge for all the "extras" like the others (like dropping wires and removing debris), and he did not need to take out my mature lilac bushes like the other two contractors required.  The overall value was very good and he delivered on the task.  However I am giving him a respectable B, for a few specific reasons:
1) the stump is still very visible--typically when I have a tree removed, the stump is ground and you don't have  a very visible stump, which no one really wants.
2) this house is  a rental, so the tree removal is an expense I need to claim on my taxes and he didn't have an official company invoice, so claiming the expense is difficult (because IRS often just thinks you paid a friend and tried to claim the expenses).  A legitimate business should really have official invoice. 
3)  he followed up with me after only 3 days and wanted to know why he hadn't received payment.  Of course it is customary for payment to be received within 30 days...then again it is also customary to receive an actual invoice.   The payment was in the mail 2 business days after the service,  and as a consumed that certainly seemed timely from my perspective.  
All being said, He provided the services requested, he did it professionally, and he was ale to perform the service in a very timely fashion.  If the need arises in the future, I will use him.  And I would recommend him, just suggest that payment details would be worked out."
