"It went flawlessly. The three guys arrived on time and made fast work of disassembling our granite slab front steps, by hand. They created a new reinforced base with crushed stone and reassembled the slabs to a new level surface. They patched two concrete retaining walls. Then the attacked the 37-year dirt build-up on our large concrete patio. They cut and filled a few large cracks and pressure washed the surface so that it now looks like a completely different patio. I could not be happier with the completed results of these three too-hard-for-us projects. Excellent work by three very hardworking professionals!"

Small jobs welcome

"JJ Sousa is my trusted mason for any all indoor/outdoor work. They can do so much more than just masonry as well! Recently they came up with a great design for a 40â granite outdoor staircase and a large outdoor patio with natural earth stones. They also solved a lot of drainage/flooding issues I was having! I highly recommend them for your next job. They go above and beyond for their customers!"

"Pete came out to the house for an estimate on a walk way project and it turned into a whole back and front yard remodel. He listened to what I wanted and offered great advice he was always pleasant to work with as well as his team and I truly canâ  t wait to enjoy this beautiful yard theyâ  ve given me!"

"I recently had my shingle roof replaced and I?m very happy with the results. The team was professional, punctual, and completed the job efficiently. The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a roof replacement."

"I had hired Rotten Rock a few winters ago for tree service. I had nearly a dozen very large pine trees that were very tall and within falling distance of my house. At first I was overwhelmed by the thought of any tree professional tackling this job, but then I met Henry and his crew. The job was completed much to my satisfaction, and I was impressed with the level of safety and efficiency. Just recently, my water supply line from my 100 year old shallow dug well to pump (in house) began to fail. No wanting to waste any time nor chance, again I called Rotten Rock. Within 36 hours Henry arrived with his machine and new water line.....and by Noon the job was done....Wow! Thanks Henry & Todd! -Michelle in Madison <br />"

"I highly recommend this contractor. I did not grade his cost because I didn't get competing bids (and therefore have no frame of reference), but I'm very happy with what he did and how he did it, so the value to me was excellent. His estimate was for $1600 and he stuck to that, except for the cost of some gravel after I agreed to get it: he charged me only what the gravel cost him. <br /> <br /> I called Bill and he came down the same day. He gave me an estimate, I accepted, and he did the work the next day. <br /> <br /> First they tore out the asphalt and trucked it away. It was pretty tight and he had to be very careful not to hit the house, garage, and granite wall, all of which form the driveway borders, but Bill did a great job at keeping it safe and avoiding any and quot;oops.and quot; <br /> <br /> Before removing the dirt/sand, he suggested (since the driveway was not flat) I get some stone dust and granite chips (I think it's called crusher run) to prevent runoff when it rained. I agreed, and he had his truck driver pick up a load after dropping off the dirt. After removing the excess dirt, Bill spread the gravel with the backhoe/digger and used his tamping machine to pack it down. He told me he'd take about an hour to pack it down, but he was actually out there for at least two and maybe three hours, just making sure that it was really packed down firmly. <br /> <br /> He did this extra work for free, even though he hadn't included it in the original estimate. The only added charge was for the cost of the gravel material, which was exactly what he'd paid (he gave me the receipt from the supplier). In my opinion, he did much more than he had promised and never asked for a penny more. <br />"

"I had a number of issues around the house I wanted to address and had to chase Paul for a quote. When I received the quote, I identified only two for completion (removing a Juniper and trimming foundation plants) due to what I thought were very high quotes for most of the work. I would have preferred to be home when the work was to be completed, but received a call late Wednesday afternoon telling me the job would be completed the next day (7/16). On 7/16, I received a call at work with questions from the worker, I could not respond in time and when I did return the call, the work had been completed. The Juniper, suckers and debris were removed completely and with this job I am satisfied. Unfortunately, the foundation plants are not  even or symmetrical and with the removal of the Juniper, the poor trimming is very obvious. A pair of gloves and a headset were left on the lawn and porch. <br /> On 7/17 I left a voicemail with Paul to express my dissatisfaction with the foundation plants. On 8/1, I reviewed my dissatisfaction in a letter and picture of the plants to Groundhog. On 8/7 in the morning, Paul called to say he would send a crew by noon and I had to be there. Since I work in Boston and was at work, I could not accommodate that time. I honestly didn't know what could be done at this point since you can't "cut up" and suggested they complete some other work to make up for the foundation plants. Paul told me he needed to speak to Dave and would get back. On 8/15 I left a message for Dave. On 8/21 I spoke with the receptionist, outlining my dissatisfaction and reminding them the gloves and head set were still on my porch.  The receptionist assured me she would speak to someone other than Dave and Paul and I would receive a return call. <br /> Never received that return call and the gloves and headset are still sitting on my porch. There was a complete lack of communication from Groundhog during this job and extremely poor customer service. I am very unhappy with the foundation plants  and will need to wait years for the smaller foundation plants to grow enough to be properly trimmed.  <br /> <br />"

"Came to the house on a saturday to do a walk through to get us an estimate (like that he did this, another company did an estimate based on what I explained over the phone, didn't like that). Friendly, talkative, knowledgeable, and offered advice in other areas that weren't part of the estimate in question.  <br /> Estimate was mid-range when we compared to two other companies. Took a few days to hear back from John to schedule the work, but he was able to fit us in within 2 weeks.  <br /> 2 person team did the work, it was a hot few days but got it done in 3 days on time. Great quality work and on budget with the estimate. Friendly, trustworthy and kindly gave referrals for other work we needed done.  <br /> <br />"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Alton Bay, NH

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
