"<p>We selected Holton Bros. because they had a great reputation for the work they do.  They were definitely not the cheapest but they are the company we had the most trust in doing the job right.  We wanted to trust the contractor would do the job right and we did not want to ever have to deal with this issue again so we were willing to pay more for Holton Bros. craftsmanship.  Matt provided us with an estimate and explained everything they would do and that there were some unknowns that would need to be tackled after demolition of the old porch.  <br /> <br /> </p> <p>The guys showed up and really got after it.  They removed the old sinking cement and removed the old brick façade. Reinforced the porch area with rebar so it would not sink in the future and poured the new porch.  They put up a gorgeous new brick that all the neighbors have commented on and then poured a new cement walkway to replace an old sinking brick walk.</p> <p>The Holton Bros. crew (headed by Darwin) was very professional and really did exquisite work.  The actual invoice came in right around the estimate Matt put together despite the fact we picked out a much more expensive brick than we were replacing.  Holton Bros. did not require any money down upfront.  They sent us an invoice after all work was completed.</p> <p>We would definitely recommend Holton Bros. to neighbors, friends and family.  They do great work at a very fair price and we trusted them throughout the entire process (which is priceless) to correct the shoddy work done by the original builder.</p> <p>Big thanks to Matt L., Darwin and all the other Holton Bros. crew members that pitched in to repair our home!<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /></p> <br />"

"We are so happy we hired Dennis for our job! It started as a simple quote for removing some excess dirt we had, and he pointed out we "might as well put him to work while he's there". As a next step in our project, we also needed an area churned up/tilled. He showed up with a dump truck and his skid steer. Once he was done hauling the dirt away, he worked for about another half hour churning up the remaining area with his skid steer - he clearly has a lot of experience!! He was working the machine like it was an extension of his hands, went right up to our fence, landscaping rocks, and bushes, and never touched any of them. Very high quality and experienced work, definitely recommend him! We'll be hiring him again for our next project."

"Everything went above and beyond our expectations! Todd was so helpful and thorough with every aspect. From the time he came over to talk to us about what exactly we wanted and give us a quote to the finished job we were nothing but impressed. We were able to discuss exactly what we wanted done with the concrete area, and he brought up good points and ideas to us. There was a lot of discussion about what needed to be done with the drainage ditch pipe, and Merit was very prompt with email responses and phone calls.  <br /> During the concrete removal there was a large hole found in our garage foundation. We also had removed old unfunctional oil pipes going into our house from that area. They told us that we would just have to hand dig out those areas after they finished filling in the gravel and put in some quick set cement. We then left for some errands, and we got a call about an hour later saying that they went ahead and filled the holes in for us so that we didn't have to dig it up later! Thanks!  <br /> Over all and from every aspect we would recommend Merit for any project you have! <br /> Cliff and Megan <br /> <br />"

"We have a small very old basement with steep steps. The crew did an amazing job getting all the dirt and concrete out and the rock in. I was impressed with how clean it was afterward, given the nature of the work. They were very knowledgeable and took time to explain whatever I didn’t understand."

"Excellent! Mike was very quick with his response to my initial contact. The work was performed today. It wasn't a big job, but it was important to us. We had a small patio resurfaced because the ground had sunk over the years. The worker who came did an excellent job and did exactly what we wanted. The price was very reasonable. Thinking this was a "small" job, during the busy season, I give them lots of credit for taking the job, for being prompt, and for the great job! I would highly recommend them!"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Amery, WI

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
