"US Inpsect's corporate offices are in VA, but they have consultants all over.  The house, pest and radon inspection I ordered was for a house in Indianapolis, Indiana. <br /> <br /> My great experience with US Inpsect begain with their easy online scheduling option.  I was able to quickly schedule an inspection for a house I intended to purchase.  I had heard of US Inspect before, as the company also does commerical inspections, and they are known to be thorough and reliable.  However, I was still overwhelmingly impressed with Dennie Baird, who was the technical consultant who completed my inspection.  Not only is Dennie knowledgable, but his professional, easy style allows him to educate the client throughout the inspection - I learned so much during those hours.  The inspection revealed several significant items that were not known to the current owner/seller.  I suspect if US Inspect's processes and procedures, and Dennie himself, were not as thorough as they are, I may have purchased the house with no knowledge of these significant issues.  <br /> <br /> I recieved the inspection report very quickly, and the radon report shortly thereafter (radon testing requires several days data collection).  After receiveing the final report via email from Dennie, someone from the corporate office called me directly to ensure I had all inspection details in-hand and did not have any immediate questions.  A few days later I receieved an invitation from the president, Bill Bowman, to complete a survey regarding my experience.  This request stated, "we can become a better company if you will take two minutes and share your thoughts with us".  A company that realizes feedback is a gift and addressing concerns and keeping up with existing good service is a very profitable business approach....fabulous! <br />"

"The inspectors arrived on time and did a very thorough check of the home. I was impressed by all they uncovered. I would have never thought to check the items that the inspectors did down to the speed at which sinks drained and the temperature in the refrigerator. The inspection report was arranged by category and even included a summary at the end that identified the major problems. I don't know how any other home inspection company can stay in business, when they have to compete with A House on a Rock."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Very well. Burgess got to the property quickly and provided us with an accurate reading and breakdown of of the numbers. They were also available by phone and e-mail afterwards for follow-up questions. Burgess even emailed us a list of recommended radon mitigators to alleviate the problem. Would definitely recommend."

"'Great experience and quality work.  The owner does all of the work himself, not one of those companies who sends someone out.  I called and booked the appointment through the owners wife who was a pleasure to work with.  She explained everything, how the inspection would be performed, her husbands qualifications, payment, etc.  The day of the inspection Ray arrived right on time.  He did a very through inspection (4 hours), he took his time, he was organized and very detailed oriented.  Lots of pictures and video of the defects of the home and for things that were an FYI to keep an eye on for the future.  Over the course of my life, this was the 5th home that I had an inspection on and Ray was as good or better than what I was expecting.  The report came later that same night and it really helped me prepare for the things that I needed to have corrected before agreeing to settle on the house.  We just moved to Virginia and I found Capitol Home Inspections on Angies List and hit a grand slam home run with this inspection company.  Look no further it doesn't get any better than this.  Thank you Ray and Jenn for a great inspection and for being a company that I can recommend to anyone who asks! <br />"

"During home inspection on the house we are selling, radon tested above acceptable level. Commonwealth provided an estimate of work to be done and cost. They retested, determined it needed mitigation, drilled a neat hole in basement floor, installed pipe that led to outside, fan, arranged for electrician, retested, and provided report - levels very good."

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Ashland, VA

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
