"***UPDATE 10/9/13: OUR WINDOWS ARE LEAKING!!!! Not just a little, RIVERS are running down the inside of our windows! We found out that this type of replacement windows they simply tear out the old innards, pop the new window inside with the old frame, screw it in on the inside, and then use a lot of caulking. The contractor ensured us during the consultation that these types of windows would not leak. He is wrong, and badly. We are only 6 months later in the middle of our first real rain storm, and our house is being flooded! 1 window leaked about a month go, but it wasn't much. We called them, they came out and recaulked it. Today, 3 more windows have water pouring through them. We literally could barely keep up with the mess using towels. We could not use buckets because the leaks are against the window itself.

As I indicated below, the guys who did the installation are really nice, but I just don't think this is the correct way to replace windows. I think to really do the job correctly, they need to take out the whole window and put in a new frame with a new window. I would NEVER EVER waste my time or money on retrofit windows again. It does seem warmer in the house, but they do not seal out the water when it rains/snows.

To be honest, we actually weren't going to hire Roy at first. He started off great by showing up exactly on time to quote the windows; however, we were a little put off at first because he didn't actually take any measurements of the windows. He merely counted them and then eyeballed the size from the ground outside the house, which was different than the other contractors that we had give us quotes. This seemed odd not only because he was different than the other people we had give us quotes, but also because we have a 2 story house, but when I asked Roy if he needed to measure the windows, he merely said, and quot;I've been doing this for over 30 years and can pretty much tell the sizes from here.and quot; Things got even more odd when he basically just wrote down the quote on a piece of paper.

Well, fortunately for all involved, the other contractors didn't work out. One was not licensed to do the work he was doing and the other we didn't like how they installed their windows. So, we decided to do a little research ad give Roy a try.

I checked his status on both the BBB and contractors state license board, then called his office to get some references, which they not only were more than willing to provide, but also had many to check on. I drove by 5 different houses and they all looked good, even if the work had been done several years before. So, we decided to give Roy a chance, and just planned on getting a written contract. Fortunately for us, Roy alleviated all of our concerns when he came out the second time. This time, he brought an assistant and they not only measured all of the widows, Roy wrote up a formal contract for us to review and sign. After we signed the contract and put down a 10% deposit, Roy ordered the windows. They came in about 10 days later and his guys started the work the following Monday.

His workers showed up on time, and were very polite and friendly. They started by giving us a nice overview on the whole process of replacing our windows and explaining how long they thought it would take. After their introductory interview, they commenced working cleaning as they went. Roy's employees were courteous, efficient! and did not cuss or drink while on the job. They not only did a beautiful job, they did the work in half a day less than they told us it would take, and also took down and rehung our blinds.

We are extremely happy with Lifetime Exterior's work, and have already signed another contract to have them install new exterior doors for us. I would HIGHLY recommend Roy and his workers.

FAQs for baseboard installation projects in Bakersfield, CA

Installing crown molding can be challenging, depending on the material and your skill level. Lightweight materials like polystyrene and softwoods are easier for homeowners to install themselves, offering a cost-saving option. However, heavier materials like hardwoods and plaster are difficult to work with and require professional installation to achieve a high-quality result. Precision is crucial in measuring, cutting, and fitting crown molding, so hiring a professional ensures the best outcome.

Crown molding is available at various price points, ranging from $1 to $30 per linear foot, depending on the material. This wide range offers options for every budget. Affordable materials like MDF, PVC, and polystyrene provide cost-effective solutions, while premium materials like exotic hardwoods or metal offer a luxurious appearance at a higher cost. Regardless of your budget, you can find crown molding that enhances your home's aesthetic.

Crown molding is installed by professional finish carpenters or painters who specialize in detailed trim work. These experts possess the necessary skills and tools to ensure precise measurements, accurate cuts, and seamless installation. By hiring a professional, you can achieve a flawless finish that enhances your home's aesthetic appeal without the risk of common DIY mistakes.

Crown molding can be installed in various areas of your house to add elegance and architectural interest. It is commonly used where walls meet the ceiling, but you can also place crown molding around doors, windows, mirrors, and atop cabinets. Installing crown molding in these locations enhances visual appeal, creates a cohesive design, and adds a touch of sophistication to your home's interior.

To determine how much crown molding to purchase, start by measuring the length of each wall where you plan to install crown molding and add the measurements together to determine the total linear feet required. Purchase an extra 10% of material to account for waste from cutting angles and to ensure seamless joints by using full-length pieces when possible. Including additional material helps avoid shortages and ensures a smooth installation process.

For a professional crown molding installer, this task takes about 1 to 3 hours per room, depending on size and complexity. Factors like the material, design intricacy, and number of corners can affect the time. If you're doing it yourself, expect it to take longer as you get the hang of measuring and cutting precise angles. Advanced measuring and planning or hiring a pro can help the project go smoothly.
