"Marquis Roofing did a fantastic job on our roof. The job was completed in one day. Tom Marquis's crew was professional, highly qualified and courteous. Once completed, the job site was completely cleaned of any building material and nails. I would absolutely hire Marquis Roofing again should I ever need another roof job done."

"I got an estimate very quickly on the repair and a general assessment of the state of the roof. Mr B's was only one of two roofing contractors that I called that would even do a repair, and Mr B's was the more prompt and better estimate. While very busy, he was able to fit me in sooner than originally estimated, and did a great job. I'm very happy and will call them again when more work is needed."

"Benchmark refaced our rental unit cabinets and it came out great! They had really good attention to detail too and came back to install higher quality drawer slides and a better drawer front (original cam in and inch too small)."

"I've been meaning to write this review for awhile now, but it's been difficult because I want to give an honest summary of our experiences - warts and all - while still being fair about the end result. TLDR: Yes, there were some difficulties, however Donna, Ricky, Tim, and the whole Southers team made sure they were acknowledged, fixed, and in the end we are thrilled with the results. You can teach a person skills or a new role, but what you can't do is teach someone to care. These people care about the work they do and they're willing to put in the time and effort and stick with it, until it's done right. That level of dedication is priceless. Now for the long version... Last July, after interviewing a number of companies, my husband and I decided to hire Southers to take on our house renovations. It was a big job. We needed a new roof, new siding, new gutters, twenty-six new windows, and two new external doors. All of this work also had to be coordinated with an asbestos abatement team to remove our old asbestos siding and our electrician who was replacing our meter and panel for the solar panels we plan to have installed. Donna was our salesperson and she worked with us every step of the way. She helped us decide on the best materials for our project, listened to our concerns about timing, and was incredibly responsive to any text or calls. Luckily, she happened to be promoted right as our project began work so she ended up being our contact through every aspect of our remodel. Yes, there were some missteps, which I will get into, but throughout it all Donna was there to help. I can't speak highly enough about her dedication and professionalism. Initially, we had a few other project managers assigned to our project. The first one ended up leaving the company early in the process. The second project manager was stationed fairly far away and wasn't as "hands on" as we would have hoped. Because of this, our building permit paperwork fell through the cracks which led to our project getting halted until the issue could be resolved. There were also some unnecessary miscommunication issues and one specific error of our external doors being ordered the incorrect size that lead to snowballing consequences. The first crew that Southers sent out to work on our home was fabulous. Pedro and his crew were punctual, professional, and precise. They were tasked to replace our windows, siding, and trim. They showed up every morning bright and early and ready to work. My husband is in construction. Every night, he would come home from work and look over what they had accomplished that day. Then, he would either confer with Pedro or leave me with notes to share with him in the morning. Not only was Pedro open and receptive to this level of communication, he welcomed it. I really appreciated his work ethic and attitude. I wish that I could say the same about the roofing crew. Because we are planning on installing solar panels, it was especially important that our roofing was done well. (Once the panels are installed, it's much more difficult to get any issues resolved.) We decided to use two different roofing materials. The majority of our roof would be asphalt, however we would have metal roofing installed on our back dormer. This was the most cost-effective way to get a new roof while still ensuring the solar panels didn't penetrate the roofing, thereby voiding our warranty. The roofing crew did an incredibly poor job on our roof. When my husband came home and inspected the work, he became increasingly upset, took photos, and contacted our project manager. We insisted that the asphalt roof get redone. Even then, there were some spots that had to be addressed. Our experience with this crew was so negative that when we were told they were also going to be installing our metal roof, we expressed our deep reservations. We were assured someone would be on site to ensure their work. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and the metal roof was also incorrectly installed. At that point, we were both upset. We invited Ricky to meet with us so that we could discuss the issues directly. To his credit, he came - along with Donna - listened to our concerns and frustrations, and committed to fixing the issues. Yes, the roof delayed progress on finishing our project, but I appreciate the fact that they stuck with it and got it done right. Ultimately, we got a good roof installed, but it took a lot of communication, frustration, and diligence on our part. In the end, our home looks fantastic! We knew this was going to be a large undertaking and that it would require a lot of time, effort, and patience. We expected there to be a few missteps along the way. However, it was worth it We now have a beautiful home that we can be proud of. If you have managed to read this far, I'll leave you with a few key lessons that I've learned during this project. 1. Make sure you have a permit to hang in your window before any work starts. 2. If your house is older than 1978, test for lead paint. Any estimates should include the cost of lead abatement. 3. Maintain open, active communication and don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. 4. Stay organized! Keep any/ all documentation and photos throughout the project."

FAQs for wood shake or composite roofing installation and replacement projects in Barrington, NH

Cedar shakes and wood shingles might seem similar, but they have some important differences. Cedar shakes are hand-split, giving them a unique, textured appearance that adds rustic charm to your roof. They're great for homeowners who want a distinctive look. Wood shingles, conversely, are machine-made, providing a smooth, uniform appearance for a more modern look. Shakes tend to be more expensive due to the craftsmanship involved but offer exceptional beauty and resilience.

A well-maintained cedar shake roof can last up to 60 years. However, factors like severe weather and improper ventilation can reduce its lifespan. You should consider replacing your roof if you notice persistent leaks, visible water damage, curling or splitting shakes, moss growth, rot, or missing shakes. Regular inspections can help you determine when it's time for a replacement.

When hiring a roofing contractor for your cedar shake roof, asking the right questions is important. Make sure they are fully certified and have extensive experience with cedar installations. Verify that their team is licensed, bonded, and insured. Ask for details about the materials they use, such as the type of underlayment and fasteners, and how they ensure proper ventilation. Getting multiple written estimates can help you compare options and choose a contractor who offers quality workmanship at a fair price.
