Derr Heating & Cooling has over 30 years experience in design, service and installation of residential and commercial HVAC systems. We only install our own products to ensure our guarantees are available to all customers. Our experience allows us to better understand the complexities of air conditioning systems that other contractors overlook. While other companies want to stay within certain guidelines that make it easier for them, what we call "cookie cutter" options, we are willing to think outside of the box and provide creative yet simple solutions to complex comfort challenges. While many companies refuse to work on specialty systems, Derr Heating has the experience to service and install almost any type of heating and cooling system.
"My problem is the invoice. It was changed to reflect an increase by $81.00 plus tax. The diagnostic was quoted to me as $139.00 plus tax on two different occasions. The additional $81.00 charge was to “test breaker” which is apparently not included as part of the diagnostic process. The technician turned the breaker switch on and off, that is all, with nothing connected to the breaker panel to make any reading. That is what cost $81.25. I was told by the technician I could pay by check. I have no checks, but, if I had given a check to the technician right then it would’ve been $139.00 plus tax. That’s the billing he showed on his tablet and what I signed for with NO indication of any additional costs. I understand additional costs but we’re supposed to be informed beforehand when there are or may be additional charges. That didn’t happen My heating definitely works now but I don’t have a clear understanding of what he did. I had already checked my breaker panel several times to make sure the switch was on when the problem started. He told me my thermostat in the living room might need to be replaced. Again the only “test” for the breaker panel was turning the switch off and on with nothing connected to give any sort of reading. He definitely tested the heaters using whatever gauge he connected to the heaters and told me they were old but getting sufficient power."

"I requested an HVAC service call quote from G&S Heating through Angi, and received a "deal" via Angi for $129. I chose them partly due to that price. G&S Heating ended up billing me $280, and said that was an old outdated deal and would not honor it. Irresponsible and incredibly poor customer relations. Also, the technician they sent did not seem very knowledgeable or experienced. He said the thermostat reading issue I was having would require another service call and the possible replacement of an expensive circuit board. I ended up fixing the problem myself. I will not be using G&S Heating again."

"This review is long overdue in my praise of Washington Energy Services for their customer service, pricing and workmanship ! My first interaction was in 1999 when they installed windows throughout my house. They are still in excellent condition. I might note I called them over 20 years later to inquire on how I could repair a broken slider and they sent someone right out, charging a very nominal amount to repair it. In 2020, I needed to replace my hot water tank, and the extremely knowledgeable Christy presented several options, answering my many questions. I settled on one with a booster that seemed to best fit my needs. Finally, in December 2023, I purchased a new gas furnace from WES. I had a minor issue with a fan switch and they responded quickly to rectify the situation. Within the past two months, I seemed to be having an issue with my thermostat (something they had not installed), and the manager, Greg, came out twice with his crew to explore the problem. Today they installed a new thermostat FREE OF CHARGE! Their excellent response and customer service is beyond any company I have hired. And I particularly love that they are family owned and have been around for decades. Their employees seem to be there for the long haul, which speaks highly of the owner. I refer all my friends and family and I won't go anywhere else for services that they offer. Many thanks to the staff I have interacted with over the past 25 years!"

Window a/c unit installations FAQs
Running a window air conditioner to cool a small room often costs less than $4 per day, making it cheaper than central air for single-room cooling. However, central air might be more efficient if you're using multiple window units or need to cool a space larger than 1,000 square feet. Choosing the right size AC is crucial—a unit that's too big or small can waste energy and increase costs.
Window AC units can use a significant amount of energy. These units use about 12 to 17 kilowatt-hours per day, significantly more than a refrigerator's one to 1.5 kilowatt-hours per day. To keep your energy costs down, run your window AC only when necessary, keep doors closed to contain the cool air, regularly clean filters and coils, and seal any gaps around the unit to prevent cold air from escaping.
Inexpensive air conditioner units are often not worth it. Low-cost products from popular brands like General Electric, LG, Whirlpool, or Frigidaire may be a reasonable investment. However, putting a small, budget-friendly unit in a large room wastes energy and shortens the life span of the AC since it has to draw more power and work much harder to cool the space. The unit will consume more energy and stress the motor and other internal parts, resulting in early breakdown and costly repairs.
The best deals on window AC units come during the fall when businesses slash prices to clear out old inventory. You can also speak with your local AC installer, who may get you a good deal on a window AC unit since they have access to trade pricing. You can also watch for discontinued products and flash sales in your area.
Window AC repair costs between $110 and $390, with most people paying around $250. Parts cost between $2 and $150, with the rest going toward labor, at around $30 per hour. The occasional one-off repair or a routine AC tuneup cost $75 to $200. Servicing can keep your AC running in good condition for several more years before you need to pay for a replacement unit.
Window AC units last eight to 10 years when installed and maintained correctly. High-quality models last up to 20 years with proper care and routine maintenance. The unit’s longevity depends on its construction quality, regular cleaning, and electrical safety inspections. Keeping the filters and coils clean and addressing minor repairs promptly extends its effective performance and ensures reliable cooling.
