Joe is essentially a one-man crew that at times got apprentice help through friends on some jobs. Overall, I'd pay for materials and time for his work, and I would give money up front for materials that he would go get himself. Joe was able to keep updated records of what he had done for me and the amounts I paid in a useful excel document that he'd print out for me every couple of weeks or so. For jobs that he could easily estimate, he'd give me a price up front, such as for my flooring installation. Bigger jobs like putting up new interior walls was paid as work was done. Overall, his work was excellent. Joe does good work for a fair price, but he takes a long time for big projects. I'm a bachelor, so I didn't mind too much, but I'm sure having a wife around would have made things awful. He's a guy I could trust with my garage key, and as he puts it himself, he's a chatty to a fault."
