"Danny and his crew were excellent to work with from start to finish. He personally came out to give us our quote and was in contact with us every step of the way. I’ve had many compliments on how great my patio looks and we are very happy with the how it all turned out."

"I've hired Ground Effects twice over a span of several years. First, to do patio + hardscaping work as a significant project but wasn't major. Second, a pretty major expansion of the existing project to overhaul my backyard. The work was excellent, on-time and on-budget. Would definitely hire them back."

"We had a patio installed in our backyard. We met Bill from Sharper Cut at a home improvement show in Upper Marlboro. He was very professional from the beginning and scheduled a follow up meeting for us to come out and meet with him on that day. Before we had the meeting, he came out to the property to take pictures and see the layout. We had previously had a drawing which we sent him ahead of time. When we met with him, he had prepared several different options for a patio, including landscape. He listened intently to what we wanted and implemented it, including the seating wall, pillars and lights. He was very patient, showed the designs, modified them based on our questions and requests, and explained things very clearly. When there was a delay with a stone that we originally chose for the patio, he had us choose another stone to our liking, without making any adjustments to the price. The crew that did the work, showed up timely and were extremely professional. They would have been completed on time but got delayed because of rain storms that soaked the yard. However, as soon as it dried up they came out and finished the project. We are extremely pleased with the patio and all of our neighbors that come and see it, absolutely love it. I have recommended him to several of my neighbors and would encourage anyone looking for quality work to be done for them to consider Sharper Cut. They are awesome!!!!"

"Everything was completed on time and as planned/scheduled for the agreed price. The crew's arrival was slightly delayed by traffic, but they called to let us know and assure us they were on the way and would still be able to complete the project as planned. After arrival the project lead reviewed the plan with me and walked me through the sequence of work. The team worked steadily and completed the project the same day as promised. Great job on all counts. This was the 3d project they have done for us and we will definitely use them again in the future."

"I was looking to add some decorative trim to our windows, and based on the other reviews here, I contacted Walker & Clarke (among others) for an estimate.  Donnie Walker answered the phone right away and we made arrangements for him to visit that same Saturday.  He told me upfront that he charges a consultation fee.  I agreed, and we met at the specified time and date.  Of all the contractors I spoke to, he was the only one who showed up with the actual carpenter who would be personally performing the work, and he brought trim samples and a catalog of other options.  He spent about an hour with us going through all the options, and even had his carpenter (Mike) assemble a samplepiece of trim on the spot so we could visualize the final product.  Every other contractor simply said they could do whatever we wanted, but Donnie was the only one who actually spent the time to show it to us and not leave anything up to interpretation.  He provided a price estimate before leaving, and got back to me two days later (that Monday) with firm pricing for his materials.  While the materials ended up being more than the original estimate, we decided to move forward anyway. <br /> They started the job on Thursday, and were finished by end of day Monday.  The windows came out exactly as I had hoped- actually, even better than that.  I was very, very impressed.  They kept the work areas clean, took care of my hardwood floors, and thoroughly cleaned up my garage after they were done.  All throughout the project, Donnie kept in touch with me and checked in to see how things were going.  Even though the whole thing only took a few days, he stopped by the house at least 3 separate times to check on the progress. <br /> In the past year, having renovated and sold a house and bought a new one, I've used a large number of contractors for different services.  The general rule of thumb seems to be that you can't get a hold of anybody when you need to talk to them.  It's very rare and refreshing when you deal with someone who actually takes customer service seriously and answers your calls, texts and emails right away.  While the price for the work was not the lowest of the estimates I received, I feel that the level of service I received from Walker & Clarke justified the difference.  I'll gladly pay more for a professional who takes their work seriously and actually understands that a happy customer means repeat business.  I would happily recommend Walker & Clarke and will certainly use their services again. <br /> <br />"

"Installation day five men and two trucks showed up early in the morning about 7:30 am unloading materials going right to work. The owner Jeff Rodgers giving out a few instructions and the men knew exactly what to do.During the day it started to drizzle with rain but the men kept on working. The men were clean.polite, and skillful.I was very impressed. The crew leader who is named Son told me he'll make sure they finish the job to my satisfaction before they leave. That made me happy. They worked almost until it got dark. Mr Rogers showed up again and asked if I was satisfied. He inspected the work along with me. I said the fence looks beautiful. I'm very happy with it. I highly recommend them."

"They did an AMAZING job and we are so grateful.  Our patio had been put down incorrectly the previous summer by a different contractor.  They were able to see exactly what had been done incorrectly and they fixed the problem.  They gave us a very good deal on the project. They worked quickly and professionally.  They went above and beyond."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Boyce, VA

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
