"Johnston Masonry installed our concrete foundation w/infloor heat in our new home last year, front and back concrete patios, 100' curvy sidewalk and granite wood-stove hearth. I couldn't be happier with their level of professionalism, expertise, timeliness and customer service. When they started our job they never pulled off until the project was completed and exceeded my expectations. I even ended up hiring them to install a new limestone driveway, culvert and yard hydrant! I cannot say enough good about this company and I would not hesitate to hire them again. Very happy customer!"

"Nick came and gave me an estimate on a Tuesday and took the trees down the next day. This was part 1 of 2. He will be installing a fence, removing a concrete patio area and fixing the really ugly flower beds. He has been very helpful through this whole process. Because of his prompt service I have hired him to do some tree work at my rental property."

"Contractor came over to inspect a large water pool that was forming on my property. He agreed it was a waterline leak. Gave me an estimate of cost based on an hourly work rate rather than a flat price as there were too many unknowns as to the extent of the damage. Which I found more comforting than 2 other estimates I received which were both based on their previous experiences rather than on my specific issue. He kept in contact, always returning my calls. He placed me on his schedule and began work on the day he was scheduled. There was no issue with me going out and observing the work while in progress. He kept me updated at each step of the process. He did a very good job of troubleshooting each step of the way, finally determining that my whole water line had started to disintegrate. He was able to pull an new line through the space of the old one, cutting down on the amount of soil that needed to be excavated, cutting down on the overall cost of the project. I had asked to be able to photograph the new connections once they were completed for my records. I was called outside when the connections were completed before the soil was replaced. He did an excellent job of replacing the soil next to my home. Overall I am very pleased with the service I received. His work was efficient, he kept crew on task throughout the project. As of the time I am writing this review I have not received my bill, but I needed to write this before my months membership was over so I did not have to renew. I am sure the cost will be in the range I was quoted. <br />"

"<p>Just wanted to drop a line or two and let you all know how impressed we were with both your workmen and their work.  In today's society, you just don't find companies that really do a great job, they usually just do enough to "get by".<br /> <br /><br /> <br />At times, without their knowledge, I was home and could hear some of the men talking.  Much to my surprise, their language and subject matter were always appropriate.  Don't find that much in the labor force today!  It spoke volumes to me.  When they did speak with us, they were always very kind and informative.<br /> <br /></p> <p>The work that was performed consisted of excavating the dirt to gain access to the footings on both sides of the foundation.  On the inside, they had to bust out the concrete floor and hand dig to the footing in order to install their brackets for the "unified lift system".  After installing the brackets, they attached special hydraulic equipment to the brackets which drove 3" diameter<br /> <br />pipes down to bedrock.  Next, they attached a hydraulic jacking system to each pier location.  Using their special vehicle with a unique hydraulic pumping system they attached hydraulic lines to each location and were able to do a controlled lift.  From what we understand, your company is one of the only ones that can perform this "unified lift".<br /> <br /> <br /> <br />We were taking pictures daily and emailing them out to family and friends who could not believe their eyes!  They started out making our basement look like a bomb went off and when they were done it was swept and looking very nice!<br /> <br /><br /> <br />All this to say that the work done was absolutely astonishing!  We will highly recommend EHM to everyone that we hear may need this type of work completed.<br /> <br /><br /> <br />Thanks so much again.  We were dreading having this work completed, but you all made it so much nicer by your<br /> <br />expertise, kindness, and professionalism.</p> <p>Mike and Cheryl <br /> <br /></p> <br />"

"I was very impressed with the speed of which everything was done. It was pouring rain before they started so everything was muddy and there was very little mud tracked into the house. Then it was very hot and they still completed everything on time. There was an unexpected fracture in the corner of our house and they gave us several options and actually recommended the cheaper of the two options. They were very prompt in getting the bid and paperwork back to us. The only complaint I had was that the top soil was full of small rocks which made it hard to grow the grass in areas. Also, they said they would come back and fix a small patch of disturbed soil on our neighbors lawn and they did not come back. However, we never called back to remind them. <br /> Overall, I was VERY impressed by the amount of repair done for the price. We had bids from 2 other places and they were higher and for less work. I would definately recommend them or hire them again. If I could do it again I would have asked more about the quality of the top soil or the cost of a more quality top soil. Also, not a drop of water or condensation in our basement. Even with very hard rains where other peoples basements were flooded. <br />"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Brimson, MN

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
