"Introduction-
My wife and I had a need for a privacy fence installed around the backyard of our house (surrounding the back half of our lot). We were looking for noise and visual isolation (privacy) for us and our two dogs. We wanted the fence to stand up to the elements, look good, and last a long time- all with as little upkeep as possible. Oh, it also had to stay within our very tight budget. A lot to ask for, for sure.
Note: I do a lot of research before beginning a project, especially one that costs as much as a fence does. Before getting to the point of asking for quotes, I had already determined that we were most likely to go with vinyl (unless the price was too high), the best vinyl products available in my area, as well as all the reputable fence installers near me. Due to circumstances around our particular backyard (ledge, serious slope), I knew that we'd not be able to do the fence installation ourselves.
Estimates/Quotes-
For all the fence companies from whom I got estimates, I asked the necessary questions and tried to discuss fences in general with their on-site representatives. I did this to gauge their overall knowledge about vinyl fencing. Vinyl isn't as popular where I live. Partly because of that, it's amazing how different products are represented, as well as the differing techniques for vinyl post installation (concrete for 6 inches, concrete for 3 inches, no concrete, only use specific type of concrete, wood reinforcement in gate posts, etc). Essentially, what's best is really based on the needs of your specific situation (type of soil, size and weight of gate, etc etc). One-solution-fits-all doesn't work with fencing.
I called to the better-known local fence installers in my town, and got three quotes. One local outfit sold the best product (the one I had identified), but gave a price for the product and installation I knew was way too high. Another sold a different product, and in the end, was not very knowledgeable about vinyl fence products or installations in general. (They were the cheapest quote.) The third quote was from a big box store. Their product was not as good, installation was the highest of the three, and I didn't feel too great about their installation approach.
I realized I needed to cast a wider net. Just because we have fence installers that are based out of my town, or the town next-over, doesn't mean I need to go with them... I got two more quotes, and one was from FenceTech.
Mike from FenceTech came out promptly to do a walk-around for our quote. He walked me and my wife through our options, and what his team would do. He had a friendly manner, and answered my questions with patience and professionalism. We both had a good feeling about him, but had decided he'd come in too high in price. The product he was offering was the middle-tier in the line of vinyl fencing I liked. It was utilitarian- quality, but not flashy. Even so, we were surprised when the quote came in as low as it did. I called him, discussed it, and made sure we were all on the same page.
One thing I will note at this time, is that every single fence installer I called said my town did not require permits for fence installation. They do. Always ask your town's planning or code enforcement departments if you need a permit for work you'll be doing.
Ordering & Installation-
Because of the delay of the permitting process, and other factors, we had to wait about a month before moving forward with the quote. During this time, I had multiple opportunities to speak with Mike and the other co-owner of FenceTech, Corey. At all times, they were friendly and professional. Finally, we were able to move forward. I placed the order, and scheduled a time about 1.5 weeks later for them to begin installation.
Everything went smoothly. Mike's team was prepared to deal with the property-specific issues we had. They did quality work, did not leave a mess behind (a couple spots of vinyl shavings from where cuts in the fencing were made, but it was obvious there was even an attempt to clean the majority of that up).
Mike called me a couple days after they were done to follow-up and make sure I didn't have any questions. He told me that if a problem arose, to just call him, and he'd take care of it. When the invoice came, it matched the estimate from the initial consult.
The fence looks great, and we feel secure in it being here, (and continuing to look great), for many years to come. FenceTech does not seem to be out to make a quick buck. They seem to be a company that wants customers for life. If this level of service keeps up, they've got it."
