"Amateur hour? This person cracked four tiles in the row above the repair, one bad enough to feel. I sent him before and after photos, but he has not responded. He charged almost as much for the repair as I was quoted for replacing all the tile. He quoted $1400 to get the job, then $1400 plus materials with a copy of the Home Depot bill, then $1600 with materials, then found a problem that raised the price to $2200. He tried unsuccessfully to raise the price again when he finished. Cash only, no cards or checks. Vibe was that of a handyman pretending to be a general contractor. Definitely not a qualified tiler."

"Provider replaced about 5 tiles that were loose. There were more tiles that were loose but he stated he didn't need to regroup them. He also reset the toilet bowl and caulked the bathtub. Some of the tiles are NOT level! At first he gave me a price of $850, which included taking up and re-grouting quite a few more tiles. He and his helper started around 9:30, and finished around 5:30. He also wanted me to pay him in cash, not credit card. He said he would not charge me taxes!! Now he wants me to pay taxes also!! He cannot be trusted!! He was bullying me to pay him the rest today. I wanted to hold $200 until he came back to see why now my floor was squeaking very loud. It was not doing this before he worked on my floor. He told me there would be consequences if he did not receive ALL of his money today! Was he talking law suit or bodily harm?? I'm thinking about going to the police. I do not want him back in my house!!!!!"

FAQs for tile: ceramic and porcelain repair projects in Caldwell, NJ

People use the terms refinishing, resurfacing, and reglazing interchangeably. Refinishing is a process that repairs old tiles and gives them a fresh new coat of finish. This is also called tile resurfacing or reglazing.

Yes, you can refinish tiles as a DIY project, but it’s important to follow all the steps involved. These include the following:

  1. Clean the tiles or hire a local tile cleaning service to remove all the residue (soap film, oil, grease, and dirt).

  2. Etch the tile to ensure the refinishing solution adheres properly.

  3. Fill in any cracks or chips in the tile.

  4. Recoat the grout.

  5. Repair any missing or damaged caulking where applicable.

  6. Apply the refinishing product, primer, and enamel.

Your newly reglazed tile should last between 10 and 15 years with proper installation. However, higher-traffic areas and moisture may result in a reduced life span. Explore the cost of different tile types to determine which material works best for your home and needs.

Your bathtub and tile refinishing cost will likely seem like a small price to pay for the transformation it offers. Provided your tile and grout are both intact, refinishing will bring a brand-new style at a fraction of the cost.

Yes, most ceramic tile is paintable with specific epoxy or tile paints. However, you’ll want to avoid areas of heavy use or moisture, such as countertops, showers, and bathtubs. Paint can crack, bubble, or wear away over time, especially on floors.
