"I called Ruban because my power had been going out  intermittently and the electric company determined that the problem was not theirs.  Dale got back to me immediately and came out the next day with his son D.J.   They found the problem very quickly and determined that the fault was with the breaker panel, as well as deterioration of the cable from the meter.  They determined that I needed to replace the ageing service, which I had suspected would be the case.  They scheduled the work within 3 days and I couldn't be happier with their work.  They took great care in making the new box fit into the opening  in my finished basement.  It was a tight squeeze, and I'm sure it wasn't easy, but they managed to do it without any damage or even a sign that work had been done.  The work they did on the outside was a pleasant surprise because they replaced the old weathered wood panel that the meter was attached to with a a nice new metal one, which was a great improvement aesthetically.  Dale took the time to explain what they did every step of the way, and why. He took care of obtaining the  necessary permits and arranged for the township inspection  of the completed work.  I asked them to come back to move a light switch and install a new outlet, which they did a week or so later.  They had to go into the attic crawl space for the wiring and they had to cut into a newly painted wall to install the outlets. They did a beautiful job and left not a scratch or even a fingerprint.  I'm planning to have them back in the spring to install some outdoor lighting
I'm so glad I discovered Ruban. They are a multi-generational family owned company.  Dale and D.J. are a great team.  They are knowledgeable and professional and obviously  take pride in their work.  Their service is outstanding and their pricing seems very fair.  I'm sorry that it took me so long to do this review. The holidays left me very little time to do a proper job.

"I purchased a $399 electrician for a day deal. Two people arrived to reduce the overall time and did all the installations in a few hours. I was pleased with their work and purchased an additional deal ($39) from them for a much smaller job a month later. I would definitely use them again.

Will start off by saying I used Raynor once before, and although they were expensive back then they completed the work I asked for and had a standard professional code they followed - you know, they lay their work mat down and wear booties when they come into your home.

This time the electrician seemed professional (laid out the work mat and put on boot covers before entering my home). The first issue was with the upfront "diagnostic fee". $250 (after tax) was way above what other electricians charged and this was NOT communicated to us before we agreed on the appointment. I don't remember this being so high from the last time I used them. The electrician could not begin looking into repairs until I signed the agreement. I was ****** about this, but then remembered I needed to swap out my door bell... so I agreed to the diagnostic fee if he got the doorbell replaced (saves me time so why not?).

After looking at the carport lights for over 2 hours, he could not find the problem and thought the only way to fix it was to do a complete rewire (upwards of $1200). He offered to run a new line below the soffit work which I would not accept. Our home is in a salt air location and I would need any new lines concealed from wind and moisture as much as possible. Also, he did not have the weatherproof switch cover in his truck and asked where a local hardware store might be. It sounded like he wasn't told about the weatherproof cover, but all in all the repairs were clearly not getting done that day.

I agreed to let him estimate the rewire job, though again I did not like the approach he suggested. I later received an estimate for over $1200 for the same work. Upon receiving the estimate, I called their office and agreed to only pay the remainder of the $250 diagnostic fee once the weatherproof cover was installed. I refused the other work they proposed. They came back a few days later to install the weatherproof switch cover. In the end I got no repairs done, save for a new doorbell and that switch cover. I later noticed that evening that a nearby outlet in the carport was not working, and I wondered if the electrician checked this outlet for a bad wire or something that could be related to the light circuit. He had never mentioned it. He also left the carport full of wiring debris, something I thought they would clean up given the initial professionalism they showed in the past.

Since they charge a premium rate, I expected more. Way more.... and I am not convinced the electrician they sent checked every possible item when diagnosing the carport lights not working.

"Lo-Ann called me as soon as my request went through on Home Advisor. We had some knob and tube wiring on the second floor and attic. Wayne, one of the electricians, came out to map the home out. This was a $325 service that was credited back to your account if you use them to make repairs. I highly recommend the service. Wayne mapped out every outlet and switch in the house. He then knew how every circuit was wired and how to fix them once the knob and tube was removed. The mapping took about 3 hours one morning and the knob and tube remediation took about 6 hours. We feel a lot safer now that this job is complete. Lo-Ann is great and she was in contact with me frequently via text and e-mail. There price for the job, I felt, was very reasonable. We would definitely use them again."

"Electrical in an older home can be complicated. We had several people give outrageous estimates or never show up to do the work. Stapleford electric was prompt in providing an estimate and completed the work with quality. The cost for installing a new outlet and bracing for a large, heavy chandelier was fixed cost and other work was a time and materials rate. Both were reasonable and they knew what they were doing with the old style wiring. We had an additional expense to get plaster repaired separately but that would have been the case no matter who did the electrical work - they referred us to a master plasterer which was great. I have no reservations to recommend or use Stapleford again."

"I had two old 100-amp panels. They ran new 150-amp service into the house and installed a single new panel. I also had previously purchased a sub-panel to allow 10 circuits in the house to run off my generator, which I had not yet installed. They installed that while they were here for a small additional fee. There was a team of 3 who did the whole project in about 6 hours. I was very pleased with the quality of work and price. Highly recommend."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Camden, NJ

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
