"They did a fine job with the work. The pump install wasn't ideal (the pipe was exposed above the water level when it should've been below, etc), but the pond was cleaned as expected. The trouble, as my "grade" indicates, was with the company's responsiveness. We were on a tight time schedule (putting the house on the market) and I was grateful that Jake had time in his schedule to come out and give us an estimate and was going to be able to get the work done quickly. Unfortunately, he missed the estimate appointment. He had it written down on the wrong day. That was frustrating when I was waiting in an empty house on a morning I took off work, but it happens & it's forgivable. Jake was courteous and professional when he did arrive. He said the estimate would be emailed that evening, but when it didn't arrive for a few days I emailed him and he then got me the estimate. Again, forgivable, but added to the missed appointment, I almost didn't use them. I needed the work done quickly and without a hassle. At the estimate he'd said they could get the work done before the weekend, but then weren't able to schedule it until a few days later (because, I think, he hadn't accounted for giving the pump time to arrive). Eventually, he did send his team (two guys who did the work while I wasn't there) & they did a fine job.
I've found that "pond guys" tend to have a very relaxed attitude toward the business side of their businesses. Jake did not prove me wrong. In the end, they did a fine job with a task that I didn't want to do myself. I'm happy with the work. But if we weren't selling the house, I might keep searching for the perfect pond person -- or I might just make sure I wasn't in a rush to get things done.

"We moved into our home in January of 2016. We have a larger back yard but, there were a lot of unleashed pets and wildlife that were frequenting our back yard. We decided that we needed to put up a fence, and quick. In the past, I have worked as a landscaper and currently own and maintain a small farm. From that, I have experience installing various types of fencing. I take pride in doing quality work and was somewhat anxious about hiring someone. I was also a lumber associate for a large hardware store so; I know how to pick out the best materials and what the overall cost would be. You may think, “if you have the skills and knowledge why wouldn’t you just do it yourself?” Well, I no longer have the tools, vehicle, time, and energy.
After searching Angie’s List and reading reviews, we had several fence companies come out and give us quotes. We decided to contract with Skip of Elite Fence to help start our backyard transformation. There are several reasons why we chose Skip: personality, precision, and price. To start with, when I first met Skip, I could tell that he was passionate about his trade and took his work very seriously. His confidence and knowledge reassured us that we were going to get the fence that we wanted. When he came out to measure, he located and verified the survey stakes based on the recorded property lines. We weren’t quite sure on the size or style so, Skip sent us multiple quotes for different materials and he broke it down by price per foot so we could easily know the cost of different designs. He answered all of our questions and explained his detailed process and timeline. Finally, and most importantly, his quoted prices were the lowest among all of the companies that we contacted. In one case, the competitor’s quote was almost double our final cost with Elite Fence.
What Skip and his team were able to do, in the short time that they had, was simply astounding. Despite the cold and wet conditions (there was still snow on the ground), Skip and his team were on site early and stayed till after dark if needed. He sourced the cedar pickets from several hardware stores in order to select the best that available, and during the installation process, I saw him reject several that didn’t meet his high standard. All of the posts were anchored with concrete and even after receiving several occasions of heavy wind and rain, the fence didn’t budge or settle. I couldn’t be more impressed with the end results. They definitely made a difficult job look simple. To top it all off, Skip, out of his own concern, has stopped to check the fence and gates and to ensure that we were still pleased. Our neighbor was so impressed with our fence that Elite fence will be installing theirs very soon.
Overall, Skip was extremely professional, punctual, courteous and efficient. I have and will continue to recommend Elite Fence to others. He is not only the best choice for his precision and professional skill but, also the most economic choice.
If you want to see his work there are examples at Elite Fence There are also 19 pictures of my fence posted on March 1, 2016. We are currently in the process of staining the fence and will post updated pictures when finished.
Contact Elite Fence for any future fence project; you won’t be disappointed.

"Design: Micah Dean met with my wife and I for an hour and we discussed exactly what we wanted and the three of us collaboratively created a plan. Dean created a quote, itemizing all the things we had discussed, and handed it to us before he left. I told him that we didn't need a full design drawing as our project was relatively simple and he seemed to clearly understand exactly what was needed. We decided on general types and sizes of plants for purposes of getting a quote with the understanding that we'd pick the specific species of plants after we decided on a landscaping company. We met with representatives of two other companies (all three are highly rated smaller companies that specialize in residential landscape work with specific experience in installing large trees) and then decided to go with Dean. We chose Dean because of reputation, confidence in his understanding of our project and our priorities, his ability to articulate a plan to meet our needs, ability to complete the project in a timely manner, and lastly price. We made our decision the third week of March.
Via email, we discussed exactly which species of plants and trees were to be used for which locations and made final decisions.
Demolition (late April): Micah's crew ground the stumps. They removed the plants we wanted to save (placing them temporarily in a different bed) so they could completely remove an old Rose of Sharon that we wanted to get rid of, which involved removing lots of roots and shoots throughout the planting bed. They removed the old brick planting bed borders. This work was done thoroughly and efficiently.
Preparation (early May): Micah used a subcontractor to grind the roots from our old maple tree flush with the lawn (kind of like refinishing a warped wood floor). The edges of the planting beds needed to changed and redefined. Micah's did not seem to thoroughly explain the details of the project adequately to his crew. This is where not having a drawing started to become a problem. The edges were not where the three of us had decided upon, and his crew had to come back to fix them later. They put stakes in the ground where they intended to install each of the plants. We moved one of the stakes and let them know about it. They delivered the soil and properly graded the planting beds and lawn area.
Delivery (early May): Five Arborvitae, one Ninebark, one Maple tree, and one Redbud tree were delivered. The Ninebark and the Redbud were not the specific varieties that had been agreed upon. We decided we actually liked the delivered Ninebark better and kept it, and Micah exchanged the Redbud in one day without any friction at all. Accuracy: C; Responsiveness: A.
Planting (early May): They were about to put the Maple where the Redbud was supposed to go and the Redbud in the Maple's intended location, but luckily my wife caught this before they actually put the large (2 - 2.5 inch caliper) trees in the ground. Again, a drawing and better internal communication within the company would have prevented this. They installed one of the Arborvitae in the original location of the stake and not where we had relocated it. They installed another leaning at a noticable angle. They came back and moved and replanted the two Arbortvitae the next day. They spread the grass seed and straw and the mulch. They left the plants that were supposed to go back into the front bed in one of the side beds, missed several areas around the trees that needed to have been seeded, and one of the mulch rings was significantly off center around one of the trees. The spade edges around the planting beds were of uneven depth, which was both an aesthetic issue as well as a functional one (in terms of being able to evenly mow the lawn up to the edge of the beds). The Maple tree needed to be pruned to correct some early-growth bad habits that should have been obvious when they planted it. They corrected all the issues the day after I notified them. Accuracy: C; Responsiveness: A.
All in all, I am satisfied with the end result. The work was completed when I had been expecting. I would like to have had fewer issues along the way, but Micah had his crew addressed every issue I reported promptly and without any push-back. I have very high standards and am a tough grader, so don't take my giving Dean Landscaping mostly B's to be a negative. I would use them again, but I would insist on a detailed diagram showing all borders and edges and exactly which plants were to end up in which locations, and specifying details such as the depth of the borders to reduce the change for misunderstandings and mistakes.
