"I am in the military and have moved over a dozen times in my 20 years of service. As such, I am used to moving into new homes at new duty stations and am often looking to do some fixing up after arriving. It was no different when I arrived in Rhode Island. We hired Tom Harrop of Harrop and Son for our basement and double bathroom remodel. He was the first contractor to respond to the request for an estimate and called several times as I interviewed other companies. He was patient and waited for me to complete the interview process. In the end I chose him not just for his price point, but he was genuinely excited about helping me out and seemed very much in sync with our ideas. We ended up hiring Tom, Mike, Mark, and the rest of his crew and couldn't be any happier. Tom gave us the exact basement we pictured but also added countless little finishing touches that made the 5 weeks he spent in our home actually enjoyable. He is very trustworthy, easy to talk to, and works with you throughout the entire process. The initial contract was to finish a basement, first floor bathroom remodel, and paint out the first floor and stairwell. Tom took it upon himself to also install some extra much needed storage, including custom shelving, and countless other touches. As he neared completion, we extended his contract to a complete demo/remodel of the upstairs second bath. After he was done with it, I think it might be nicer than the master! Bottom line, you won't do any better than Harrop and Son. His price was more than fair, stayed exactly on budget, was easy to work with and end result was magnificent. I will definitely be using him again. He has earned my 5 star recommendation!!"

"I recently had my shingle roof replaced and I?m very happy with the results. The team was professional, punctual, and completed the job efficiently. The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a roof replacement."

"I called Pride on the advice of a local realtor. An upcoming commercial building sale required work to be done immediately. We had a jammed lock on an exterior door and needed a locking knob on an interior door. I called on Thursday, needing the work done on Monday. I left a voicemail message, and the callback came in minutes. On Monday morning, the work was done and I had an emailed receipt. As a plus, both locks were keyed the same! I learned in a call that they do door repairs and alarm wiring too. They have over 20 years experience and are happy to explain their work. I will definitely use Pride Locksmith in the future!"

"Our front stairs needed to be repaired and we had some wood rot that needed to be replaced along the back doors. They did a great job on both projects and the cost was very reasonable."

"UPDATE #2:
Windows, sliding doors and front door are finally finished.  The installers did a fantastic job.  The windows we ordered were not the ones we received.  We ordered the SoftLite Pro window and received the Imperial LS.  The LS is a better made window as it's one of the upper tier SoftLite windows but with the standard glass package ends up with a slightly higher u factor (0.28 vs 0.27 for the Pro).  Plus, the opening is a little smaller as the Pro has a thinner sash.  But it really isn't enough of a difference to gripe as the windows look terrific.   SoftLite offered us a credit for the rebates so we could purchase a new AC unit that would fit the narrower sash, which was a solid gesture on their part.

The sliders we ordered were not even offered by SoftLite.  So we ended up with a triple pane 0.26 u factor slider for the cost of a double pane 0.27 u factor (which is not made, it's actually a 0.28 u factor double pane slider).  The sliders are seriously heavy.  I'd recommend anyone considering sliders to get the triple pane slider since it's all glass, there's a lot of heat transfer - better to have the extra protection here.

The ThermaTru door had a couple cosmetic dings from the manufacturer - extra caulk, a slightly cracked frame.  Again, easy enough to just fix those issue than to get bent out of shape about it.

All in all, it wasn't the smoothest job and there were real communication issues.  The owner had other issues he was dealing with so I can understand it to some extent.  Still, as a business, communication is key.  The installers were great - really courteous, really professional.  They worked right through for two and half days to get the windows and front door done.  Then came back for another full day to do the sliders.

Most contracting jobs will have problems - this one had more than it's fair share.  But the key is to acknowledge the problems and make them right.  They did that.  And in the end, the product - the whole reason for the job in the first place - turned out beautifully.

UPDATE #1:
Received a call from the owner on Monday, 27 July.  He acknowledge problems and is trying to make things right.  There were very real issues with communications, scheduling, and ordering as the sliding doors we ordered were only just submitted on Monday 27, July, even though we ordered them back in early June.  The 4-5 week project we were quoted will end up being an 8-10 week project and the window and front door portion will be installed (I hope) the first week of August.  I will continue to update as the project progresses.  I'm hopeful the worst is over.

After calling several times to find out the status of our install, since we were a few weeks past the original time quote and I still hadn't been contacted, the run around started on 17 July.  Apparently the windows were manufactured and were shipped to the contractor but there were no sliders.  In fact, no one seems to know where the sliders are or if they were ever ordered (I say apparently because I have no way of knowing or verifying this) .   Still, the windows were in so we were told we would be able to at least get that portion of the job done and when the doors were available, they would come back to do those.  The first date we were told they would be installed was Monday, 20 July.  The owner, Steve, called and asked me to call him to confirm the Monday install.  That call was on Friday the 17th and I returned his call on Saturday AM and left a message saying that Monday would be fine.  Monday AM I still hadn't received confirmation about the install so I called Monday AM.  The installer was doing another job and he wouldn't get to me until the following week (27 July).  On that call, I was also told that Steve would get to the bottom of the mystery of the disappearing slider doors.  I have called 3 times since Monday the 20th to get an update about either the window install or the sliders.  It is now Monday, 27 July and I still have no idea if my windows will be installed or if the sliders we ordered and paid for were ever actually ordered."

FAQs for doors (interior) installation and replacement projects in Clayville, RI

If your existing frame is in good shape, you can replace an interior door without changing the frame. This is a budget-friendly option because it saves on the cost of removing and installing a new frame. By choosing a slab door that fits your current frame, you'll save on labor and materials. Just make sure the new door matches the old one's dimensions for a smooth replacement.

Standard interior doors are 80 inches tall and range from 28 to 32 inches wide. Interior doors vary from 24 to 36 inches wide, depending on their purpose and the available space. Building codes require interior doors to be at least 80 inches tall and 24 inches wide. Knowing standard sizes helps you select a new door that fits properly in your existing opening.

It costs $600 to $2,000 or more to move an inside door. The total price depends on your location, the type of door, and materials needed to complete the project. Moving an interior door requires walling up the leftover space and opening up a new wall where you want the door to go instead. You’ll also want to plan for the expense of framing the new wall opening and adding trim.

Exterior door installation costs an average of $1,175, with a typical range of $525 to $1,800. The higher expense compared to the cost of interior doors comes from the need for exterior doors to be weather-proofed and they are often made of thicker, more durable materials. The associated exterior hardware must also be able to withstand harsh weather, so these cost more as well.

It costs between $300 to $2,500 to make a doorway wider on average. However, the wider you need the space to be, the more it will cost. Some homeowners choose to widen interior doorways to make the house more wheelchair accessible. In order to be wheelchair accessible, an interior door needs to be at least 32 to 36 inches wide. Also, some older homes just have narrow doorways due to the nature of how homes were built differently many decades ago.

It takes between two to five hours for a professional door installer to install an interior door, depending on complexity and materials. A pre-hung door typically takes around two hours, and larger doors like double French doors can take up to five hours. If you’re doing the project yourself, expect it to take a little longer than that, especially if you have little to no experience completing this type of project. Keep in mind that a pre-hung door can be installed about an hour or two faster than a slab door.
