"Acorn was great. As a first time homeowner, I appreciated the recommendations they made for replacing the old insulation in our attic and getting the largest bang for our buck. At the same time, they didn't try to upsell us on things other contractors recommended. Overall, the price was competitive and the work quality was high."

"Working with Elite Work was enjoyable. We spoke with a number of roofing contractors and discovered that Elite Work has the most expertise and experience in installing solar panels as a roof replacement. Additionally, Ron and his staff performed a fantastic job. The replacement of the roof took two days. Additionally, new gutters and skylights were installed. A+ Recommendation!"

"I would highly recommend Manny and his team to anyone in need of roofing services!! Manny was great at communicating about the project and making suggestions. The team arrived on time, worked efficiently and left everything clean. The quality of their work was excellent! Another family member had used Manny in the past and was also extremely happy with their new roof!"

"They took down my 93-year-old slate roof (a dangerous and dirty job) and replaced it with asphalt in 10 hours. A good sized team with the right equipment. I watched all day and was impressed that no cut corners came into the job. They were very careful to do it right. The team of roofers were under a capable supervisor. They â flexedâ and put a little extra (material or labor) in, when something unexpected was discovered, or a slight customization to make the result better was called for. All the slate that came down was a huge mess of tiles, flakes and dust. They got that too. Iâ m going to use them again."

"First off and foremost, the actual installers were PHENOMENAL; they were extremely professional, did an outstanding job, and clearly communicated everything that was going on.  Even the sales agent that first came to the house to give an estimate was punctual, professional, and did not force anything in the sale.  The prices were actually very competitive and they were able to fit us in earlier than another company, so because it could be done earlier and cheaper we went with this company.
That is about where the quality of this company ended.  DO NOT USE THEM.  Since my experience I have discussed with other people who have had fences installed by the same company and they shared a lot of my pain (wish I knew this ahead of time).  On to my experience:
I was told, with over two weeks advanced notice, that my house would be the first stop on the installers route that day and I was told to expect the installers at 10:00 AM.  So, I took off of work, woke up early, and eagerly expected the installers.  By 11:30, when no installers had shown up yet and no call from the company had occurred, I decided to contact the company and ask what was going on.  After being put on hold and transferred to a "manager" I was told that the installers were having car trouble and would be there within the next 15-20 minutes.  At 12:15, 45 minutes later and now a solid 25 minutes past the time I was told to now expect them, I called the office yet again and was transferred to another "manager".  This guy was supposedly a son of the owner or son-in-law to the owner of the company.  He was pleasant on the phone but informed me that my install appointment was NOT at 10:00 AM but instead it was 1:00 PM.... wait what? So why was I lied to about the car trouble and told I was scheduled for 10:00 AM???  He had no answer for that but told me they should be there shortly and to not worry, but if they don't show up to call back and ask for him personally.  Well, at 1:45 PM when still no one was at my house I called back and mysteriously this second manager was gone for the day.  So I spoke to now a third "manager" who again assured me that the installers should be there any moment as they just left the last job.  Finally at 2:05 PM the installers showed up at my house and when they arrived they informed me that I was in fact scheduled for 10:00 AM but that they were called on their way over and told to go to my house late.  Also, I was told that they did not in fact have any sort of car trouble and that they did not have all of the installation materials since they used some up at the last job (they would get back up supplies delivered later).  The installers apologized many times for the fact that they were so "late" and felt awful even though none of this was their fault.
The installers started and were off to a great start, however upon working on the fence I became completely infuriated about the fact that I had taken off of work and lost out on that paycheck along with not being able to accomplish anything considering I sat on my hands for over 4 hours.  So, I called the office and demanded to speak to a manager (got manager 3 again).  When I spoke with him and explained that I was extremely unsatisfied and furious that I was lied to throughout the day multiple times he was very unresponsive.  (I understand things happen, things change, but DON'T LIE ABOUT IT).  So I demanded a discount (or the $200 fee for the gate to be installed to be waived) and got absolutely no compromise from the manager.  When I threatened to withhold payment, the manager then hung up the phone called the installers and informed them to stop working.  After 20 minutes of no noise, I went out and provided the installers with some Gatorades and asked what was going on.  They reluctantly told me they were told to stop working because I was not going to pay.  Even though my yard was ripped up and they were 2/3rds done with the job they were told to not finish and to leave.  I was in full on rage mode at this point, called back and said fine put your workers back to work please I will pay the balance I just want this done.  I heard a "heh, fine" and he hung up.  Upon checking on the installers they were back to work.  When they finished the job was very well done and I am very happy with the installers and the quality of their work but overall the company is run by a bunch of stone cold liars that I will NEVER recommend to anyone ever again.  H*** I actually started this Angie's List account just to leave this feedback.

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Cranford, NJ

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
