"It was excellent! Our family could not be anymore satisfied with Mike and Judy's professional guidance and attention to detail, for our total kitchen remodeling. We are a family of five and Mike worked daily, persistently, to get us back into our kitchen. Everything went smoothly, ordering cabinets and countertops, flooring and tile .We were impressed with Mike's cleanliness. He would sweep and organized his tools and have everything he used for the day put up and out of our way. Mike has an eye for detail. Our family could not be any happier with our new, beautiful, modern kitchen, thanks to Mike and Judy Banter! We would highly recommend them!!"

Customers say: Quality work

"Should have been a six week job and it turned into a 12 week job.  Very stressful for my wife and I.  I do not feel that Tom listened to my concerns about the work and I don't feel he tried to address those concerns.  Problems with the layout drawing from the cabinet supplier and how his folks installed the cabinets.  I feel Tom would not take responsibility for being the cabinet installer and his being responsible for working with the cabinet designer to make sure the layout and install went as it was planned to go.  Problems caused the coutner tops to have to be modified due to the base cabinet install.  Tom blamed the kitchen designer, but I feel it is Tom's job to work out any of these problem as part of the contractor and install on the job prior to having the counter tops installed.

UPDATE: Below is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Tom Phelps on Saturday 9-13-2014 and his response on Sunday 9-14-2014.  This was 5-6 weeks before the beginning of the work.  The layout drawings and kitchen views were attached to this e-mail.  Included in the e-mail was the brand of cabinets we finalized the project on, the name of the designer, his phone number and his e-mail.  Tom acknowledges receipt of this e-mail by saying he will contact him with any questions.  Tom had this information 5-6 weeks prior to beginning the work and in fact I sent this information to him several times during this 5-6 week period.   Tom's crew installed both runs of the base cabinets 3/4" short of what the layout drawings showed they should be.  They installed the filler pieces in the wrong orientation causing the base cabinet runs to be short.  He would not take responsibility for this and even to this day will not.   I don't know if he is purposefully being misleading or can't remember, but either way it is his responsibility as the contractor to manage the job and he did not do a very good job on my project.  He even states this was a 3 week job and the counter tops took 3 weeks, this is 6 weeks.  The work took 12 weeks to complete. We started well in advance and should have been done by Christmas, but Tom did not finish until almost New Years so our house was a mess during the holidays which we planned properly to have the work done except for the poor job of managing the project.

Email: [member name], I will call the cabinet guy on Monday. The panel should always come a little larger than the exact size of the cabinetry. The crown molding should be fine at two and five eighths. Thanks for the information, now I can see what you are talking about. Have a good weekend, Tom

On Saturday, September 13, 2014 4:57 PM,

Tom:   Here are the view layouts of the kitchen.  If you open [member name] you will see the back of the peninsula.  The two doors tot he left actually open and are a cabinet.  The two tot he right are a single width panel with the doors applied.  My cabinet guys question is since this covers the back of a 18 & 15" cabinets do you want this exactly 33" wide or would you like it a little wide, say 1/4" so you have extra to trim if you need it.   I am purchasing cabinets from Direct plus.  Medallion brand.  My contact there is Jim.  317-337-1400 they are closed on Sun & Mon.    Would you consider calling him to get more clarity on why this might be necessary?  He seems to think it might be when mating the panel to the actual cabinet next to it.  Not sure why?   Thanks.   [member name]

FAQs for kitchen remodel projects in Crawfordsville, IN

Your galley kitchen needs adequate clearance around any island installation to maintain functionality. Most galley kitchens lack sufficient width for traditional islands, as these layouts prioritize efficiency in smaller spaces.

If your kitchen has an unusual width, consult with a kitchen designer who can evaluate your specific dimensions and recommend appropriate solutions. For narrower spaces, consider alternatives like rolling carts or narrow work tables that provide additional surface area without permanently restricting movement.

Kitchen remodels require six to 10 weeks for completion, though timelines vary based on project scope and material availability. Simple updates like cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement might finish within a few weeks, while comprehensive renovations involving structural changes often extend beyond two months.

Planning stages add approximately four weeks before construction begins. Maintaining clear communication with your contractor and ordering materials early helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Common errors include insufficient clearance between opposing countertops, inadequate lighting that creates shadowy work areas, and poor storage planning that leaves countertops cluttered. Some homeowners select oversized appliances that overwhelm the space or invest in expensive features that don't address fundamental workflow issues.

Careful planning, accurate measurements, and consultation with experienced professionals help avoid these pitfalls and ensure your renovation successfully addresses your kitchen's specific challenges.

Whether expansion makes sense depends on your home's layout, your budget, and your long-term plans. Combining a galley kitchen with neighboring spaces creates more open, flexible layouts that many buyers prefer. However, removing walls involves substantial costs, particularly if they contain plumbing, electrical systems, or structural elements.

Sometimes, optimizing your existing galley layout through better storage solutions and lighting proves more cost-effective than expansion. Consult with a contractor to evaluate specific costs for your situation.

Effective galley kitchen lighting combines multiple sources to eliminate shadows and create visual spaciousness. Overhead fixtures provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lighting illuminates work surfaces directly. Consider recessed ceiling fixtures that don't protrude into limited headspace.

Lighting with dimming capabilities allows adjustment for different activities. Reflective surfaces like glass tile backsplashes or glossy cabinet finishes help bounce light throughout the space, reducing the corridor effect common in galley layouts.
