"Progresive Restoration did a great job on our condo building. Marcus and his team are extremely hard-working and communicate often. There was never any confusion about our project and they paid attention to every detail from when they started on the estimate to completing the job. Overall great experience working with Progressive Restoration."

"I hired Morris to fix and finish the work I hired another contractor to do, who did it so poorly, I wouldn’t allow him back into my house to fix things. Morris responded right away to my inquiry and arrived on time to review the requirements and gave me a quote. He returned a few days later and finished the job in two days. The major work required creating a curved baseboard and installing shoe molding in my foyer and fixing a cracked oak threshold in the Laundry room. He was absolutely meticulous, did things the right way, created beautiful corners with perfect cuts. He was polite and cleaned up throughout the day. The area was left spotless when he was done. If you need a good worker, I highly recommend Morris and will definitely use him in the future."

"It went well, I hired him, he had to rebuild a lot and he worked non stop until the job was finished & saved me thousands of dollars, He cleaned up before he left & I was very happy, and Mark has done more work for me since & if he can't make it on time, he lets me know, I have more work Mark will be doing for me, as soon as weather permits. .People I trust to do what they say they will do are hard to find, and so glad I lucked out with finding a person that keeps his word and I can trust. Thank you Mark"

"Very well. Jeremy had been recommended to me by several friends. I called him and he and another gentleman came out the very next weekend and repaired the issue including all the additional problems cause by the moving wall. They did a great job in securing the wall and fixing all the related issues.

"Rager Renovations has done excellent work on tearing down our old covered patio, leveling the ground and setting new 8x8 posts for our new pavilion. Jasper is very particular when it comes to his work. Heâ s willing to listen and make suggestions based on his experience! He shows up early and works a full day. We are very satisfied with his work and his ethics."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Dekalb, IL

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
