"Pierce comes highly recommended: he has done multiple jobs for us, always with wonderful results. He installed a sod lawn which, a year later, is lush and beautiful. Recently, he solved a serious drainage issue by installing a French drain and river rock; he also accompanied us to the nursery to help select specimen trees and shrubs, which he installed. We are consistently impressed with his professionalism, attention to detail, and prompt/thoughtful responses to questions and requests. We will use him for all landscaping projects in the future!"

"Steve did a great job putting down our sod. He was very responsive and patient about answering my many questions. Afterward he did my spring clean up and used a hand mower until the sod was rooted. He continues to mow our lawn and we will use his services again next season."

"Excellent! I can't say enough good things about this project. We live in a 1920 Dutch Colonial, our walkway was falling apart. Miguel gave us samples to look at that would match our front Brick porch. The brickyard he sent us to allowed us to bring samples home to compare. He ordered what we wanted and within 4 days began the project. He came early in the morning and stayed well into the evening and completed the job in 2 days from demolition and removal of the old walk to the installation of the new one. He seeded the lawn that edged it. We selected him because he a patio and driveway and walkway for our nextdoor neighbors. We've lived here since 1974 and people trust the contractors we use. We highly recommend him and we always like to hire local owner operated businesses. For an additional fee he planted 2 trees in the front of the house. We are very satisfied."

"Pat knows his stuff! He was on time; professional; told us exactly what needed to be done; how he would do it; when he would do it; and where to obtain/select the stones (that was an extra cost of about $3000 on top of his work) he would install. We felt very confident in him, and he really came through! He called us every day to keep in touch as to the next phase and the progress he was making. His crew took great care in placing/setting the stones. He came back to make sure we were satisfied. YES! Get your other quotes and then just hire him! (That's what we did.)"

"They used a bucket truck. It was a difficult location but they never even came close to damaging roofs, fence or shrubs growing below.  They even protected a recently planted shrub with a can before starting.  They did a very professional job.  I highly recommend them."

"The Good:
They are prompt with returning phone calls. I left messages twice and they called back within 5 minutes each time. They had an estimate ready for me the same day they came out. The estimate was for sprinkler system install, regrading of property, mulching and clearing an area, fixing a drainage issue, and installing a level base for a shed I was having built. The estimates were detailed, and outlined what materials they would use. Overall a good example of what a customer should expect from a contractor. I also spoke with several customers of PennyGreen who stated they do great work.
The Bad:
The owner was 30 minutes late to my scheduled appointment. I left work early to be on time. I did not receive a phone call indicating he would be late. I had to reach out and call them. He did call back in under 5 minutes to explain he was running late and provided a new time he would be at my home. That didn't sit well with me. I run my own business and would never leave a client hanging for that long without contacting them.
The estimates were the highest of 4 that I obtained. For example, a reputable contractor (licensed and with references) wanted just under $3,000 to install the sprinkler system when PennyGreen quoted $7,600. One could argue PennyGreen's quote provided a better system and they may be correct, however, I don't need a Maserati to water my lawn when a simple domestic car would do.
Other Observations:
Before meeting with PennyGreen, I read their reviews on this site. I take reviews with a grain of salt. The one thing that concerns me is how PennyGreen responds to negative comments. When in business you will always have clients that are less than satisfied. It's how you choose to deal with them that defines you as a company. Their responses seem less than professional. This played a factor in my decision to not use them as much as their price did.

FAQs for sod installation projects in Deptford, NJ

Seeding costs less up front, but you’ll wait months—and sometimes a full season—for the grass to fill in. Sod costs more per square foot, yet it gives you an instant, usable lawn the day it’s installed and needs far less care during the first year.

If speed and early curb appeal matter, the higher sod price is often worth it; if you’re watching every dollar and don’t mind the wait, seed can still be a smart play.

Start by sketching your lawn and breaking it into rectangles or circles. Measure each section, multiply length by width, and then add all the sections together for the total square footage. Standard sod rolls are two feet by 1.5 feet, and one pallet covers 450 square feet.

Divide your total area by 450 to see how many pallets you need, then round up—extras come in handy for cutting around curves or mistakes. Still unsure? A local sod supplier or installer can confirm your math before you order.

Most sod grips the soil within 10 to 14 days. During that stretch, keep foot traffic to a minimum and mow only if the grass gets tall. After two weeks, the roots should be strong enough for light use, but wait six weeks before heavy play or frequent mowing. Giving the grass that short honeymoon helps it anchor firmly and sets the stage for a durable, healthy lawn.

Give your new lawn two full weeks before any foot traffic, then stick to light use only. Hold off on vigorous play, parties, or regular mowing until the six-week mark so the roots can dig deep. Keep watering on schedule and watch for any dry patches. A little patience now means stronger turf and fewer repairs later.

Keep an eye on color, moisture, and even growth. Fresh sod should stay uniformly green; brown spots or gaps hint at dry soil or poor contact. Water deeply at least once a day for the first week (more in hot weather) and back off gradually after the roots take. Avoid heavy foot traffic until the grass feels firmly anchored. Quick attention to trouble spots now prevents costly patches later.

Aim for spring or early fall when daytime temps hover between 55°F and 80°F. Mild weather and consistent moisture help the roots knit quickly. Laying sod in midsummer can stress the grass, while frozen winter soil blocks rooting altogether.

If you must install outside the ideal window, budget extra time for watering and tending to the turf. Choosing the right season makes the job easier and the lawn tougher.
