Mike Foote impressed me immediately with his promptness - he always arrived at the time he said he would, which to me indicates a level of professionalism, trustworthiness, and respect for my time that I appreciate. 

He also had an understanding and appreciation for older homes and construction methods which I felt would be an asset, as my home was built in the early 1900s and was in need of significant structural repair.  I wanted someone who would be able to handle the unforeseen complications that inevitably arise when major repairs must be done on an older home, and someone who would also seek to respect and retain its personality (quirks and all.)

I bid the project out to several contractors using the same project scope and description.  Mike's estimate was at the lower end of the range and of all the contractors, he took the most time to explain the breakdown of costs.  Furthermore, prior to my awarding the project contract to him, Mike went out of the way to do significant legwork and fact finding related to permitting and local regulations.  He had no obligation to do this, but the effort was greatly appreciated and certainly helped sway my decision in his favor.

It became known to us that we would need to hire a structural engineer to remain in compliance with local inspections and regulations.  Mike did a great job as an intermediate contact for the engineer, and also attempted to keep the project cost and scope expansion under control.

Throughout the project the job site was kept as clean and orderly as could be reasonably expected, which was no small feat given the scope of the work and the confined spaces they were operating in.  

Whenever there was an unexpected complication that required additional work or expense, Mike would take the time to lay out the various options (and the pros and cons of each) for how to proceed.  Throughout the entire project, I found his communication skills to be exemplary.  This was very helpful logistically, since I was often away at work while the project was in flight.  It also established and maintained a sense of trust between us.  Mike would keep me posted with regular status updates, would meet with me regularly to discuss the progress and various issues that he thought should be brought to attention, and was always very responsive to questions I had.  He was very easy to get a hold of, which I appreciated tremendously.

And of course, I am extremely happy with how everything wrapped up.  There was one significant increase in project scope and cost related to the stone footing at grade - something that Mike had warned would throw an element of uncertainty into his estimate - but this was handled very fairly and expertly.  the work looks great, and my neighbors have all commented on the professionalism of his crew and the impressive final outcome. 

I would not hesitate to hire him again for any project in my home - whether it be small or large - and would not hesitate to refer him to friends or family.

"Generally, I was pleased with the work. There were some scheduling issues (scheduled to start on a day, but didn't read through the texts to confirm, so didn't show up that day), but once they started the work, it was done in relatively good time. There was a pricing issue as well, in that we had contracted to have the siding repaired and replaced, but we didn't notice that the estimate did not include painting. When we asked about painting, we were told it was no problem. Once we received the quote for the painting however, we decided it was too much money, and said not to do the painting (via phone conversation and via text). The painting was done anyway, and though the cost for it was more than we had wanted to pay, it was already done and so we were stuck with having to pay additional money for it (though David did reduce the cost somewhat, which was helpful). There was also a quality issue with the work. However, when we called David and told him about the issue, he came to our house immediately to work through it, then stayed at the house with his employee and made sure everything was corrected. "Colonial Restorations was superb.   Our family very much enjoyed working with Brad Green and Tom Green.  

At the outset, they made thorough assessments of our family's barn, identifying several problem areas and offering multiple proposals for how best to address each (including strategies and estimates).  They walked through the different proposals with us, addressing all questions and discussing different options.  This was extremely constructive and important to the process. 

They demonstrated very clear understanding of post-and-beam wood construction.  They displayed great expertise in working with wood (white oak, red oak, hemlock) and with the tools, jacks and cribbing needed for this work.  They worked carefully, always putting in place the necessary jacks and cribbing in advance of each phase of this project.

They were clear about their schedule and were very responsible about communicating with us.  If there were a day that they would not be on site, they let us know ahead of time.  With the exception of a snow storm and an illness, they were on site five days a week from the first week in January till the second week in February, 2016.  

By the completion of this project, Colonial Restorations had made significant and important structural repairs to our barn.  This work was done with care, craft, accuracy, and to code.  (All elements of this project were examined and passed by the building inspector.)  Most important, these repairs respected and worked with the existing structure and materials of the barn.

We could not be happier with these repairs or with the work done by Colonial Restorations.  It was a pleasure working with Brad and Tom."
