"Roof replaced as proposed, within time predicted and within the price. On day one, the team (or crew) arrived, prepared for the work (laying down tarps), removed existing roof materials, installed new moisture barriers and new roofing material in one day. Cleaned all areas around home, and cleared all nails with powerful magnet broom device. On day two, a smaller team returned to finish up the work, installing storm guards and materials to seal all joints between the house and the roof. On day three, we received the final invoice for services, and paid in full. All work was performed professionally, and looks great. With a fifty year warranty on materials and labor, we know that this roof will last for a long time. We have only purchased new homes in the past, and never had a roof replaced in my thirty-five years of owning a home. If you need your roof replaced (or repaired), then I recommend using Augustine Roofing. TC"

"We had a leak in the master bedroom ceiling. We called RIBA Construction in for a repair estimate. HB (their estimator) inspected our roof and found a hole where a branch had fallen and poked a deep gash through the tiles, at a valley between two slants in the roof. The painted area on the ceiling of the master bedroom had puckered and split, so it needed to be refinished & repainted. There was another area in our house by a window in another window where the paint had warped that we asked HB to give us an estimate for. He examined our window frame, inside and out and told us that the window frame was no longer level underneath the vinyl siding and the wood in the corner of the window was damp and he recommended that it should be repaired. Repair of a section of roof tiles: $300 Repair of a window underneath vinyl siding: $400 Refinishing & painting of ceiling & wall by window corner: $350 Each of these three tasks was performed by different repair men on different days. The estimate and the three repairs were all scheduled promptly and with clear warning as to when they would arrive. All of the work appears to have been done well and handled professionally. We would recommend them to anyone who need one or all of these the three services that they performed."

"Marshall installed a new roof on our house this month, and the crew was just fantastic...the job was done in two days, and the care of our property and the cleanup with simply awesome and blew us away. We could not be happier with our beautiful new roof and the work and the crew. The sales, contract, and scheduling process was also simple, straightforward, and pressure-free. Everyone we spoke to was responsive, friendly, and helpful. I highly recommend Marshall, and we will use them again without hesitation if we require new siding or windows. Thanks so much, Matt, and Radalpho and your crew!"

"i hired them to replace approximately 32 double hung windows. the price was as good as any and i was in no mood to haggle. the process was very clearly spelled out and the prep that i would have to do was, as well. there were a few snags with them getting the windows (due to supply chain issues that everyone was having) so the dates changed, but i was involved in those changes. when they did start, they got most of the work done on the first day and came back to finish the next day. a few things went wrong, a window was broken, another had a scratch, and many of the windows were over-caulked to the point of being awful looking. the broken window was addressed even before i brought it up, as was the crack. when i told them about the caulking they sent someone the very next day and told me the installation crew had used the wrong caulk (outside caulk) and that they would be back to fix it. they did.... there were a few more windows after that i saw too much caulking on, and they've come out to redo those, too. All in all, their service is amazing. there were so many people involved who deserve a shout out, but i can't recall their names. my team leader or manager was Michael and he was a gem. i wouldn't say the product i bought is the best; the corners aren't perfect and the glass fogs up (i'll let Presidential know when i have a minute), but the windows work great and they look exactly like what i wanted. i was so thrilled with them, that i ordered a replacement for my front door with sidelights and transom! the price was comparable and i already knew what kind of service i was going to get. And i did!"

"I needed to replace an old townhouse roof damaged by high winds. My experience with Roofing & More from my first contact with Marie was outstanding. Dwayne came a few days later and provided an estimate, complete explanation of roofing options and company polices, the insurance, license, pamphlets and documents. He also had a crew come out, the next morning, to put up some tarps. Angie keep me completely up-to-date on the project and scheduling, I was never left in the dark wondering about what was happening. Rob, Operations Manager, came out for a pre-construction meeting to explain exactly what and how the crew would perform the replacement, safety methods, home protection, cleanup and photo documentation during construction. On the day the work was performed the amazing hard working crew, led by Armando, worked as prescission drill team, continuously non-stop. They completely cleaned up all material that floated onto my neighbors areas. I did not find any debris that was overlooked. I was so impressed with Roofing & More that I have other projects for them."

"Overall the installation went well except the "bowing" in the portion of the roof over the garage. We contacted Power on several occasions, but we haven't received a proper response yet. Below is the email we sent to Power. Power did acknowledge receiving the email, but nothing has happen so far. Email: You replaced our roof April 23, 2022 – project number 35-74502. We’re pleased with the replacement except for the portion over the garage…it’s bowing. Below, is our account of the events detailing how we have tried to resolve this issue. March 26, we met with sales team, Chris Pierson and Christy. We were assured that the bowing over the garage would be addressed and corrected since we were getting a brand-new roof, down to the decking/framing. The replacement should resolve this issue unless it’s structural. Brandon, project manager came out March 30 to check the readiness of the installation; to verify the frame could support the new roof. During the appointment, he mentioned that he would be on site the day of install. The roof was replaced on April 23rd. No on-site manager ever came on site, the lead guy of the work crew was not an effective communicator. We engage beyond the one time he asked for an extension cord. I called POWER and left a message with Chris Pierson that same day after the crew left to express my dissatisfaction with the roof over the garage. POWER came out to inspect/QA the project at completion (the roof) on April 25th, I believe his name was Zach. We pointed out the concaved roof on the garage. He stated that portion may be a structural issue and Power could not address that. I asked him how much would it cost to replace it? He thought about it for a minute or so, then stated it could be replaced, but it would be “redo” and he quoted us a price of approx. $8900. He proceeded to say that he could knock it down to about $7800 if we added an additional project to replace the house trim. This is when he mentioned that they have company meetings on Tuesdays in the morning and he was sure this project would be discussed. He acknowledged that POWER’s communication could have been better (better details in the project notes). We waited few days thinking that someone from POWER would reach out and when that didn’t happen, we called Chris Pierson (the POWER sales guy) on April 28th. During this call, Chris scheduled another QA/follow up appointment for May 9th at 10:00am; he said Dylan, a service manager would come out. On May 9th no one showed up. About 10:20am, we called POWER only to find out that we did not have an appointment for that day. We were not the appointment list. We then rescheduled for 10am the next day, not even 10 minutes later POWER called back to inform us that unfortunately they were not going to be able to make it because of some staff meeting. I recall asking “is the meeting all day”. That’s when we were told that the next available date was June 16th; feeling like we had no choice we accepted the June 16th date at 6pm to allow both of us to be present for the meeting. Upset and feeling like we were about to get the runaround, we placed a call to GreenSky (financing team) to inform them of the matter since loan was activated and payments would begin soon. After sharing the situation with the GreenSky rep, she took notes, and we submitted a complaint because again we felt like we were about to get the run around. On June 12th, we had a call with the assigned GreenSky caseworker. He advised that we should continue to try and resolve the matter with POWER. On June 16th around 1:50pm, I received an apologetic call from Terry, apologizing for being late, that his prior appointment ran over, he was out in the sticks and phone reception was not all that great. I mentioned that our appointment wasn’t until 6pm as so my husband could be home. I was told that I must be mistaken because they don’t make appointments after 6pm, his latest appointment would be around 4:00pm. He said that my husband really didn’t need to present, it would be a quick look and since he was in the area. He asked for a summary of the situation; I gave him the run down. He asked if I could send him a few pictures, which I texted him a few of the garage roof. He said he got the jest of it. He apologized and asked what could they do… we said that we would be open to a knocking something off the price or repairing the area. He said let me call my office. He called us back to say that someone from senior management would be calling us to try and resolve this that evening of June 16th, but still haven’t heard from him or POWER."

"This was my first experience with JW Home Improvement, though I have a LOT of experience with other contractors for a host of problems and home renovations, including many unexpected problems. I used them based primarily on Angie's List positive reviews, so I want to leave one to help others. Overall, I was satisfied with their service and would use them again. At the same time, there were a few shortcomings worth mentioning that help explain, to me, the several negative recent reviews I see as well. Bottom line, and this is most important: they seemed highly professional throughout, Oscar and Jesus were extremely nice and very competent, and they seem to have done an excellent job in quickly finding the source of the guest bathroom leak and in repairing it. Ultimately, that matters most. I also appreciated the fact that while at first they said it would be 2-3 weeks before they could get to me, after I pointed out it was an active, albeit slow, leak, which could cause a lot of damage in 2-3 weeks, they were able to fit me in to the schedule two days later, which was very helpful. JW was very efficient from the moment I first called them, always following up with phone calls, texts and/or emails on scheduling the estimate, the work date and time, and the follow-up. Josh the supervising estimator was very nice and explained their approach and what would happen very thoroughly. Oscar and Jesus showed up right on time, told me what they had found and what they needed to do to repair the leak and reattach the kitchen light that had detached from the ceiling due to the leak, and kept me informed throughout the process. So, all that is an A, without qualifications. In addition, the light cover developed a big hole in the process of their taking it down, and JW agreed to pay the $80 cost of a quick, immediate replacement, which was appreciated. Now I need to add the shortcomings, which gave me some pause despite the excellent service noted above. 1. JW appears to be a high-volume, high overhead operation. From the telephone receptionist, to Josh the estimator, to the assistant who called to schedule the appointment, to the person who followed up to make sure I knew of the appointment, to Oscar and Jesus, to the accountant who sent me the invoice, to Brian the JW adviser, I dealt with at least 8 different people over the 4 work days I dealt with JW. That's a lot! To their credit, they appeared very efficient, but I couldn't help but think of dollar signs and how that was adding to the cost of my service, to support that many staff, compared to most contractors I have dealt with. 2. Josh's estimate, which he stated was "conservative" when he supplied it in person, was between $1450-2000 to cover all the tasks. He said he liked to be conservative so there are no surprises and that often the final bill is on the low end. Well, despite the fact the leak was quickly found and only a small area of kitchen ceiling drywall had to be exposed and then repaired, and despite the fact the minor jobs were completed very quickly (just a few minutes), the final invoice sent to me was for $2475, after a 10 percent discount and including $131 in materials. So I was unpleasantly surprised, and said so, politely but by email and phone call. To JW"s credit, Brian, an adviser, called me within a few hours, explained that despite the quick diagnosis, they had had to remove a toilet to get to the leak in the water valve, and that explained the extra time and expense. Ultimately, he agreed to reduce the bill so that it ended up $100 above the high end of the estimate, plus materials. While I was still disappointed it was so high, and it's not like removing a toilet should be unexpected when facing a bathroom leak or takes that much time,, I appreciated the accommodation and the quick and courteous response. 3. The invoice itself was non-transparent. It provided no breakdown of the hours spent (I'm pretty sure I ended up paying for the lunch hours of the two workmen, which maybe should be expected but was still news to me) and the time spent procuring materials from a Home Depot five minutes down the road. This is why the explanation from Brian helped, but it should have been spelled out in the invoice in the first place. Moreover, it was clear I had been charged for the time spent both in installing the new light fixture to replace the one that had been broken and for the time it took Oscar on the phone to get approval to reimburse me for the fixture. Had I not objected, I would have had to pay both for the fixture and for its installation, when I had nothing to do with it. 4. Oscar and Jesus left the 4-foot long broken light fixture in my dining room, so now I have to spend 45 minutes going to the recycling center to dispose of it. 5. Their pricing is somewhat high, in part due to their high overhead, I think. I am not someone who goes for the least-cost service, as that often is short-sighted in solving the problem over the long run. This crew was professional, and the repairs come with a one-year warranty. I am willing to pay somewhat more for the reassurance of professionalism, as that is more cost-effective in the long run. Even so, given the relatively small size and scope of the leak and ease of repair, I thought the pricing somewhat high. That's something to note up front if you're going to use JW, and I am more willing to accept it when none of the other shortcomings mentioned above take place, but when they do, it becomes a bit more of an irritant. I would have graded the pricing a D had Brian not reached out and somewhat accommodated. So, to end on a positive note, when faced with a leak of unclear origin and scope, it's like going to the emergency room--you don't know exactly what's wrong or how much it will cost to fix it, but you do know you need the problem diagnosed and fixed, pronto and that it won't be inexpensive. JW did that, and they operated with professionalism throughout the process. I likely will use them again in the future, though given their high overhead and thus cost structure, I will make sure to choose them for projects where leveraging their experienced personnel to greatest advantage makes the most sense. In other words, not for more routine matters, but where it matters to get experienced and prompt service."

"We used Mike Bennett of Springfield Roofing because we trust him. He's been their in the past when we needed him and we wouldn't go anywhere else because of him. He's fair, responsive, and a straight shooter that will work with you. Replacing a roof isn't cheap, so when we saved up the money we called him and he worked within our budget and time frame. His team showed up on time and just went to work. They were very diligent throughout, including their clean up effort - which was spotless. Beyond the work of the team putting on the roof - Springfield sends their own in house inspector to double check the work afterwards, someone completely separate from the first team just to make sure everything is done, and done right. Gives us a lot of confidence that we made the right hire. And although we know we won't have any roof needs in the near term, we will always have Mike Bennett on speed dial. Great job, thanks Mike and Springfield Roofing!"

FAQs for wood shake or composite roofing installation and replacement projects in Fort Myer, VA

Cedar shakes and wood shingles might seem similar, but they have some important differences. Cedar shakes are hand-split, giving them a unique, textured appearance that adds rustic charm to your roof. They're great for homeowners who want a distinctive look. Wood shingles, conversely, are machine-made, providing a smooth, uniform appearance for a more modern look. Shakes tend to be more expensive due to the craftsmanship involved but offer exceptional beauty and resilience.

A well-maintained cedar shake roof can last up to 60 years. However, factors like severe weather and improper ventilation can reduce its lifespan. You should consider replacing your roof if you notice persistent leaks, visible water damage, curling or splitting shakes, moss growth, rot, or missing shakes. Regular inspections can help you determine when it's time for a replacement.

When hiring a roofing contractor for your cedar shake roof, asking the right questions is important. Make sure they are fully certified and have extensive experience with cedar installations. Verify that their team is licensed, bonded, and insured. Ask for details about the materials they use, such as the type of underlayment and fasteners, and how they ensure proper ventilation. Getting multiple written estimates can help you compare options and choose a contractor who offers quality workmanship at a fair price.
