"I've been a customer for 19 years and I emailed and asked if they had any cheaper options to what I have. They canceled me (I guess). I've sent several more emails and it shows where they have read them, but no one will answer me. I work various hours and have a lot going on and can't find time to call, so that's why I email them. They can't keep people employed and there has been a different person come in my house every time."

Professional pest technicians look for several key indicators during an inspection, including silverfish droppings (which resemble black pepper), yellowing stains, shed exoskeletons, and damage patterns on paper, cardboard, or fabric items. They pay special attention to dark, humid areas, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics, where silverfish are commonly found to hide. Technicians may use specialized tools to check behind baseboards, inside wall voids, and under fixtures where these nocturnal insects often remain hidden during daylight hours.
Modern silverfish treatments have good safety profiles when applied correctly by licensed professionals. Many companies now offer reduced-risk formulations designed specifically for sensitive environments. Your pest control provider should provide clear safety instructions, including recommended waiting periods before re-entering treated areas. Always discuss any household-specific concerns, such as allergies, respiratory conditions, or pregnancy, with your technician before treatment begins.
The timeframe for complete silverfish elimination varies depending on several factors, including the size of the infestation and the treatment approach. Most treatments begin showing results within days, but full control requires addressing both adult insects and their eggs. Environmental factors, such as humidity levels and access to food sources, also influence the effectiveness of treatments. Your pest management professional should provide realistic expectations based on your specific situation.
Standard homeowners' insurance policies often do not cover pest control services, including silverfish extermination, as these are considered preventable maintenance issues rather than sudden, accidental damage. Insurance providers view pest management as a routine homeowner responsibility. In extremely rare cases where silverfish cause substantial, documented structural damage, some policies may provide limited coverage; however, this is a rare occurrence. Always review your specific policy details or consult with your insurance agent for clarification.
Effective silverfish prevention focuses on creating an inhospitable environment for these moisture-loving pests. Install dehumidifiers in areas prone to dampness to maintain humidity levels below 50%. Eliminate clutter, especially paper goods and cardboard, which provide both food and shelter. Regularly vacuum and clean storage areas, especially those containing books, papers, or textiles. Seal potential entry points around pipes, vents, and utility lines with suitable materials. Consider scheduling periodic professional inspections to detect new activity before it becomes a problem.
