"The Project was a complete success from start to finish! Elias, the Project Manager was excellent. We had a major problem with a roof that was leaking . We had several contractors come to look at the roof for estimates. Elias spent the most time of any of the contractors viewing and evaluating the roof and siding as well as the inside of the house where the water was leaking into and discussed the project with the President of Beantown. He was excellent at explaining what needed to be done. It was not your average "roof job" as the roof abutted a large chimney and the room under the roof was cold and drafty. He was very patient with me as I had many questions about the project. Janice, the Office Manager, was courteous and always available from start to finish. The roofing team was very professional and did an excellent job. They also added the appropriate insulation, new siding to the house by the roof, gutters and appropriate flashing. The roof not only looks great, but the room beneath the roof is no longer drafty and there are no leaks. His team cleaned up after the project was completed such that you wouldn't even know they were there. Elias was so professional and he even contacted us after the first rainstorm to make sure that everything was fine. The Office Manager, Janice sent the Roof Warranty to me right away. If you are looking for a Company to do a solid, professional, worry free project from start to finish, then go with Beantown Home Improvements. Thank you again for doing such a great job!"

Customers say: True professional

"Mr. Cook responded promptly to my request for an estimate on my roofing job. He arrived as promised and provided a very thorough and fair estimate for the work requested, which was re-roofing the house, a garage, an addition and a shed, adding a 27' section of gutter to my garage and replacing two skylights in my addition. He was professional and personable, as well as very knowledgeable. The estimate he provided was complete and fair. In addition, he provided a list of homes he had roofed (with shingle colors) so that I could get a good idea of the color in actual lighting conditions. I was very pleased with his interaction and have no doubt as to his capability. Unfortunately, you can only hire one firm and I opted for a different company but you should contact him for an estimate on your job. He is well established and would be competitive."

"On Top Roofing is Top of the Line Roofer. Professional delivery with solid quality! Company was hired to correct the issues caused by a prior roofer whose incompetence has cost me additional thousands in repair. On Top Roofing installed a ridge vent that the prior roofer only placed on the roof, re-flashed the chimney where prior roofer failed to install to match new rook lines, re-surface flat rook where prior roofer ignored. In addition, On Top Roofing was used on apartment buildings to help close up the roof and eliminate a bat problem. On the Top Roofing is the only roofing company to use. It takes a while to get on their schedule, but they show when they say the will and do the job they say they will do. Only hire On the Top!! You will not regret."

"Excellent. I have NEVER dealt with such a GREAT company. I am very leery of contractors because of past experiences. I am completely awestruck and amazed at the crew that Tom Bean had do my roof. There is only one way to describe the whole process from project quote to finish, EXCELLENT and a pleasant surprise. Thank you!!!"

"Northern Exposure Roofing & Siding did an exceptional job increasing the airflow in our attic. Rich, from Northern Exposure, was extremely helpful in educating us about the importance of proper air flow in enclosed spaces. Proper air flow is crucial in order to reduce the chances of ice dams, mold and other issues that result from insufficient ventilation. Rich, his sons, and the team at Northern Exposure Roofing & Siding, did an outstanding job installing a breathable ridge vent, closing off the end gables and replacing the insufficient air flow soffits with much better designed ones that fully maximize the air intake. Rich and his team were highly professional, courteous, helpful in designing a best fit solution that fit our needs and did an excellent job!"

"All aspects of the work were executed efficiently, professionally, and with skill. The Shamrock team worked through difficult weather to replace a large, complicated roof. This included the removal and replacement of asphalt shingles, rubber roof, and copper panels. The Shamrock team also replaced cedar shingles on multiple dormers, made repairs to the subroof, replaced many areas of damaged molding, as well a skylight, and several copper and wood gutters. They also designed and installed a custom heating wire system in multiple areas of the roof to prevent ice dams. The installation went very well and we have had absolutely no issues in the month since the work was completed. The Shamrock crew responded to all of my questions and concerns, while working on the job and whenever I contacted them over the phone. As our roof structure is large and very complicated, Patrick and his team took the time to explain all of the options and advantages/disadvantages of different approaches as issues and questions came up. I am very happy that I went with Shamrock for this difficult job. I would recommend them highly and will definitely use them in the future."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Franklin, MA

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
