"Scott and his team are true professionals. I initially hired him to install a sump pit, pump, and associated plumbing to replace the old floor drain system in our basement to prevent flooding during the heavy rains we can get in Virginia. Scott was very knowledgeable, came in with a practical solution at nearly half the cost of any competitor and had the work done within the month. The gentlemen he brought with him to do the digging and installation were a great group of guys. They were quick, professional, and cleaned up everything after they were done. The system ran perfectly. We also hired Scott to do put some electrical drops, and hired someone to do some paint work for us before listing our house to sell. Once again, the work was fast, he worked around our hectic schedule and we were more than satisfied. After we got our offer we had a few repairs that came up in the home inspection and we were able to use Scott as a reference to negotiate down on a few repairs as well! Could not recommend him enough!"

"Had a great experience with Chris Kuper at Basement Detective! My basement flooded from non-stop storms and I needed a sump pump installed along with complete renovation of my basement. They were very competitive in pricing and outstanding in results. Chris even helped coordinate with the contractor doing my basement renovation after the sump was installed to make sure none of the drainage was disturbed by the new work being done. I have since weathered at least 3 large storms and can hear the sump working as needed. Very happy with the results!"

"Chris came out on extremely short notice to examine possible moisture in the walls of our rowhouse. He was able to open our drywall (cutting a neat square that caused as little damage as possible), perform a thorough inspection of the area, and confirm there was no evidence of mold. His explanations were very clear and assuaged our concerns. He followed up later that day with a detailed photo-report. Would recommend to anyone with concerns about water damage or mold."

"I very carelessly let our upstairs laundry room sink overflow in our 6 month old home, and it soaked through all the way to our basement. We were absolutely panicked when we called Al and his team (at 10pm!), and the were beyond fantastic from start to finish. They came out within an hour of us calling, and Al let us know in detail what he thought we should do. We decided against working with insurance to avoid a premium increase, and Al was very understanding of our decision. He worked with us on a solution that avoided having to rip out flooring and tons of drywall, and it worked beautifully. Al was in constant communication with us throughout the 3-day process, which helped put us at ease. He and the team were always prompt (they came to our house 3 times over the 3 days) and very professional. We were so surprised when they took their equipment away, because they mopped the floors! We fully expected to have to put everything back ourselves and clean, so that was very much appreciated. My husband and I would hands-down recommend this company to anyone who is in need of water remediation services."

FAQs for toxic lead testing projects in Fredericksburg, VA

If your home was built before 1978, there’s a strong chance it contains lead-based paint. Many pre-1980 houses also contain lead in their plumbing and decorative materials, so age alone is a significant red flag. Older homes near industrial areas face an even higher risk. Because you can’t confirm lead by sight, scheduling a test is the safest way to protect your family.

In older houses, lead can lurk in painted trim, window sashes, soil around the foundation, plumbing pipes, and even vintage hardware. The metal is toxic, and children and pregnant women are most at risk. Exposure can trigger developmental delays, learning problems, and organ damage. Because the EPA links even low levels to serious health effects, test every suspected surface and address any hazards right away.

A positive test means lead is present somewhere you can touch, breathe, or disturb. The next step is a full risk assessment to map exactly where the hazard lies and outline the safest fix: encapsulation, enclosure, or full removal. Repairs start at $1,000 but can exceed $10,000 for complete elimination, so act quickly and hire certified pros to keep your family safe.

EPA lead certification proves that inspectors, risk assessors, and abatement contractors follow federal safety rules under the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program. The credential costs an average of $300, and certified professionals can legally test, contain, or remove lead hazards. Hiring a certified pro protects you from fines and ensures the work meets strict health standards.

Lead-based paint looks no different from any other paint, so you can’t identify it by color or sheen. Even flawless walls may hide it. If paint starts chipping, flaking, or peeling, schedule a professional test right away. Only laboratory-grade testing confirms lead and guides the safest fix for your home.
