"Excellent in every respect. Very pleased and happy that we choose Apex Roofing. Apex does not use sub-contractors for roofing work, which was very important to us based on experiences with roofing companies that use sub-contractors. Apex lives up to their motto: "where honesty and integrity are paramount"."

"Of the dozen or so companies I called, Richards & Swift Roofing was the only one that didn’t try to push unnecessary work or inflate the price. Jim, the owner, personally came out for the quote, a stark contrast to the usual “salesmen” other companies send. Jim told me exactly what needed to be done—no more, no less. He reminded me of my grandfather, who was also in the trade. Both of them are the kind of people whose handshake/word something. Him and his crew replaced my roof and gutters with precision, speed, and care. No stress. No surprises. No shortcuts. Just honest work, done honestly. People like Jim don’t exist anymore. If you need a roofing professional you can trust, this is who you call. When the work was finished the only evidence of it was that my roof looked brand new; he also brought my kids gift bags with stuffed animals and coloring books which is honestly the kind of nicety and thoughtfulness that’s usually missing from the the world. "I hire Pure Gutter Solutions to get the gutter filter installed. Gave a fairly reasonable price and also they were not as pushy as a certain company. The work that was done was also professional and clean. Will recommend to anyone trying to get gutter filter installed."

"The service tech was Guy.  He was professional and informative.  He asked if I had any concerns, inspected the house, did a heat test, walked me through all the areas that could use more insulation, and gave me tips for things I could do myself.   At the end, he gave me an estimate for all the different areas we discussed without any pressure to schedule the work which I also thought was very respectable.  I think people should try their insulation check just so you know what areas of your house need extra insulation.

"Evaluated two companies to do the work. Obtained names of these firms from Angie's List.  Both ' A Cheaper Chimney Sweeper' and the other firm came to my home to evaluate situation and quoted a price to stop the leaking.  Though the other firm seemed a little more polished felt more comfortable with Lee, the owner.
Work began promptly on the day we agreed upon (March 2014). Lee accompanied the two fellows that did the work. Kevin and Al.  Kevin being the lead person.  Nice guy.
Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort in digging down around the outside basement wall (in muddy conditions) the basement continued to leak.  My recollection was that Lee and Kevin said it wouldn't and if it did, call them.
I did and Lee & Kevin returned to inspect the situation.  A new date was established (Sept. 2014).  Kevin returned, we agreed upon a little more money to make it right'.  Once again, a valiant effort by both Kevin and his assistant, Al.  This time I even permitted them to remove a shrub near the porch so they could really have access to the exterior basement wall. Unfortunately, the basement leak continued.  We attempted to establish a 'return' date.  Kevin kept making dates to return but was never able to keep the appointments.  Later he and I managed to connect on the phone and he expressed his sincere desire to stop the leak for me.
Finally, had a 'text message' conversation with Kevin (think it was a text message).  In that conversation Kevin indicated it was beginning to get cold out and the tar they use would work better if we waited until the warmer weather (Spring '15).  Sure hope I hear from them soon!  The spring thaw is about to begin and I'm getting really concerned as I know this is when the leaking begins!  They really seem like honorable guys; it's just that the problem still isn't fixed.  Once it is I'll be happy to revise my 'Ratings' of   'A Cheaper Chimney Sweeper'.  Was hard to do at this time as I feel as though 'I'm in limbo.'
Hey, Lee. I had more work I wanted you to quote on.  Would actually like to pursue that other work as I know your going to take care of the 'leaking porch' situation.

"Provider arrived a little early.  He did visual inspection  of the exterior and used a video camera to inspect the inside. He took time to show me what the camera saw on the inside and to explain all of the damage ... and the need for repairs.  He said my chimney was in the worst condition he had seen. It took more than two weeks for him to get back to me with a whopping estimate for repairs. Haven't decided if I'll use him. Stay tuned.

"We are very pleased with the job Roofman did on our home. In one day they tore off old roof and replaced it. They were promt, personable and professional. They were careful not to damage our gardens and lawn. Every bit of debris was cleaned up at the end of the day. We are extremely satisfied with our new roof. We have had several neighbors favorably comment on it as well. We love our updated sunroom - no more leaky skylights! We highly recommend Roofman (855-976-6362) for your next roofing project."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Garden City, MI

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
