I am married with 2 children. I am a volunteer fire fighter. I serve as a council member for my town. I enjoy doing small projects on the side ( evenings and weekends) I am comfortable doing most handyman work, if it's something beyond my knowledge I would recommend a professional.

"I needed a new 220V outlet in my garage for charging my Tesla. I got a few quotes from companies like John Nugent, Kolb electric etc. The quotes were considerably higher ranging between $2500-7500. Murphy Family Services offered a flat price deal of $799 on their website. The deal included all material too. The website was super easy to use and was able to book an available date. Michael the technician was very professional and explained what he had to do. He warned me he might have to cut a lot of holes based on how my joists were located. We ended up being lucky and didn't have to cut a lot of holes. I had a couple of issues: 1. Loudoun county inspector failed the installation as the wrong gauge wire was used. I was very surprised that such a mistake was made. However when I called the owner he very quickly scheduled a followup and had the wire replaced. 2. After initially scheduling the job I was trying to figure out if I needed a county permit for doing this type of work. The person on the phone was a bit rude and told me to call the county and figure it out directly. Overall I am pretty happy with the work and highly recommend them."

"The gentleman from Rescue was very professional. He was thorough and explained step by step what and where the problems were with each appliance. In our case, it was the refrigerator and stove. His price was very reasonable and fair. We will definitely telephone him first, if we have need for another appliance repair. We highly recommend him."

"A team was sent and diagnosed a bad motor. Motor had to be picked up 1 1/2 hours away the next morning. Since weather was VERY cold, they left space heaters for our tenants to use, and replaced the motor the next morning. Way above and beyond excellent service"

"The toilet needed to be replaced. I was told that I would only get the builder standard grade toilet even though I was signed up with the highest plan. The plumber was replaced my toilet with something that was definitely builder grade and not even close to what I had. I called CHOICE and they told me that it should have been replaced with something comparable to what I had. Twice they told me they were going to have my claim looked at and I have not received a call about it or any new information. The new toilet is wrong in size and specs and doesn't fit well where it is in the bathroom."

"HVAC EVOLUTIONS services technician Mynor Morales was very promt and friendly in his services. He arrived within the hour I had contacted his company when my furnace suddenly stopped working the day before a very large storm was to hit our area.  After finding the problem he was able to get the part and install it without delay. I found him to not only be helpful and fair but honest, which is pleasantly surprising  sometimes in this industry especially when you are faced with  a sudden emergency. Instead of calling the big names I took my friends recommendation and called HVAC EVOLUTION Home Appliance Repair Heating and Cooling Services.  I was very glad I did and will certainly not only pass the referral on but I will also feel good about calling them in the future.

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

FAQs for appliance (smaller size) installation and replacement projects in Gloucester Point, VA

Garbage disposals last around 10 years when properly maintained. If your unit is getting close to that age or repair costs are increasing, it might be time to consider a replacement. Regular maintenance and careful use can help maximize your garbage disposal's performance and help it reach its maximum lifespan.

There are several signs to watch for that indicate your garbage disposal needs to be replaced. Replacement may be necessary if it doesn't work even though it's properly connected, the blades are worn and causing delays in operation, a persistent foul odor that won't go away, or leaks coming from the bottom due to a compromised seal. If you're experiencing any of these issues, it might be time to consider getting a new garbage disposal to keep your kitchen running smoothly.

A plumber or handyperson can install your garbage disposal if the electrical connections are already in place. If you need additional electrical work, you'll also need to hire a qualified electrician to handle the rest of the job. Hiring local professionals ensures the installation is safe and up to code.

It’s important to avoid putting certain items down the drain to keep your garbage disposal running smoothly and avoid clogs. Expandable foods like pasta, rice, oatmeal, and bread can swell and cause blockages. Coffee grounds, grease, fats, and oils can accumulate and create clogs. Hard items such as meat bones, nuts, and fruit pits can damage the disposal blades. Eggshells, potato peels, and fibrous vegetables such as celery, pumpkin, corn husks, artichokes, onion skins, and asparagus can wrap around the blades or obstruct the pipes.

Not every sink is suitable for the installation of a garbage disposal. The compatibility of the sink with the disposal depends on the material and structural integrity. While many standard sinks support these units, fireclay sinks are prone to cracking under the added stress and should not be used. Confirm that your sink can securely accommodate the disposal before installation.

Choosing the correct size garbage disposal depends on your household size and how much waste you produce. A 1/3–1/2 horsepower unit should be sufficient for households with one to two people. If your household consists of three to six people, a 1/2–3/4 horsepower unit is recommended. FA3/4–1 horsepower model will be necessary. For larger households of five to eight people
