"We had a wonderful experience working with Modern Day Design. We did a mini kitchen reno, changing everything in our 2003 kitchen except for the cabinets. Jessica handled all of our communication with schedules, timelines, and subcontractors. Jim and Jake were great as well - Jim created a little microwave nook for us in our existing pantry and did a beautiful job on adding the crown and shoe molding. We gave them a deadline of before Christmas and they did it!! We absolutely love our new kitchen and it already feels like home! "

Customers say: Quick response

"Karen was tremendously helpful in guiding us through the process of ordering cabinets for our whole home remodel. We would have been lost without her. Not fully understanding how forward-thinking you must be when designing the spaces for your home, Karen went on and beyond to show us a variety of design options to meet our needs. She was also extremely patient and kind with us while we were making our decisions, all the while, keeping us aware of timing deadlines and discount options. Whenever we had questions, she was there to assist us. She answers her phone and responds to messages in a timely fashion. My husband and I felt very well taken care of and that she was excellent regarding service and support. I would highly recommend Karen and Kitchen Design Services."

"We had new countertops and a sink installed in April 2024 through Costco, with MKD handling the installation. We paid over $6,500 for the job. Just 14 months later, we walked into our kitchen to find the sink had completely fallen?due to failed adhesive and the fact that MKD never used the mounting clips that came with the sink. I contacted MKD and sent photos as requested. Days went by with no response. When I followed up, they admitted they had ?overlooked? the photos and promised to call back that afternoon. They never did. After another follow-up, they informed me the installation was only covered under a one-year warranty and that I would need to pay a $500 service fee just to have the sink reattached. Our sink is now literally being held up by 2x4s. This issue could have been avoided with proper installation and could easily be resolved with a quick visit but MKD refuses to take responsibility. Think twice before hiring MKD. In my experience, they have been careless, unresponsive, "

"This decorator came to my home for a two-hour consultation, which cost me $300. She gave me a few ideas (add wallpaper to the dining room, change the bathroom lighting, etc.) and said she'd be in touch in two weeks with specific choices. That has been over a month and I never heard back from her. I feel I have been completely "taken" by this service and would like a refund of my money."

My journey into interior decorating and home staging began with a genuine love for design that I've carried since childhood. Growing up, I was always rearranging rooms, experimenting with colors, and finding ways to make spaces feel welcoming and beautiful. Friends and family often sought my help to transform their own homes, whether it was creating a cozy room or preparing a house to appeal to buyers. Realizing how much joy I found in helping others bring their visions to life, I knew it was time to turn this passion into something more. I decided to start my own business, where I could not only decorate but also offer home staging services. Now, I get to combine creativity with strategy, creating spaces that feel personal and designing homes that stand out in the real estate market. Each project is an opportunity to bring warmth, style, and functionality to the homes of my clients.

FAQs for kitchen design service projects in Grand Rapids, MI

A professional kitchen designer is a specialist in planning and implementing the remodel of kitchen spaces. They'll help you pick materials and styles, give you a quote, render a model, and send the order to manufacturers and installers. You can think of them as creative project managers who will facilitate your kitchen project from start to finish.

No, a kitchen designer can't plan for structural remodeling since kitchen designers aren’t structural experts. Consult a pro for structural engineer fees and inquire about changes like removing a wall. Additionally, for changes to your kitchen's electrical, plumbing, or gas lines, you'll need to hire the appropriate professionals, like a licensed electrician or plumber near you.

A kitchen designer’s process includes the following:

  • Finding inspiration: They may ask for photos, feedback on material samples, and preferred fittings to understand your vision.

  • Using design tools: These include computer modeling software, 3D and high-resolution cameras for recording your space, color wheels, and sketches.

  • Considering appliances and fixtures: It’s important that each item is installed correctly, balances aesthetics and functionality, and is conveniently positioned in a kitchen work triangle.

  • Looking at the whole home: A designer will consider your home's age and style.

  • Writing up plans: After taking measurements, they create a plan based on your specifications.

It takes anywhere from 10 to 20 hours for a professional kitchen designer to come up with a fully fleshed-out plan for a mid-size kitchen. However, that time can increase if you ask for a complex, custom-designed plan. Ask your designer for a quote on both pricing and overall time frame before you start working together to ensure you're on the same page with expectations.

If you're doing an extensive kitchen renovation, hire a kitchen designer to manage the project and ensure things go smoothly for you. A major renovation may include new flooring, countertops, cabinets, lighting, and structural changes like knocking out a wall or upgrading the electrical, plumbing, or gas lines. If you're doing something more minor, like only replacing a sink or painting your cabinets, you can either pay for installation or DIY.
