Small jobs welcome

"I hired Cameron to install a metal dog door into an exterior metal door. He responded right away, asked good questions and arranged to do the job the very next day. He was friendly, professional, and you can tell he enjoys his work and wants to do a great job. He even checked back a couple of days later to make sure I was still happy with his work and reaffirm that he stands behind it. You don't get that kind of service much anymore! I'm keeping his card and recommending him to my neighbors!"

"Hello, My name is Phil Carr-Jones, I am reviewing my experience of working with and building my own kitchen, using cabinets and doors from Arkansas Wood Door. While I am an Episcopal Priest, it turns out I get to do a lot of things they don't teach you in seminary. Over the years, I have had to get fairly skilled in all the trades, including, no surprise, carpentry. But I am by no means an expert. For instance, I employed a retired carpenter to help out with the crown molding and other trim. Apart from that though, this is all my and my wife's work. So let me state up front, Arkansas Wood Doors is the go to place for the DIY’er who is thinking of remodeling their own kitchen. Here's why: I searched the web for months, literally doing comparisons and research on flat pack rta cabinets. I went to the big box store for a design and pricing in their three lines of cabinets, and I went in for a consult with a small custom shop in my area. Here's what I found. 99 outof 100 rta cabinet companies have their product made in china which means the standards for formaldehyde are going to be as fishy as they smell, plus you can only get cabinets in fixed sizes so if you looking to eeck out every last inch of space you're going to lose a lot and you'll be using a lot of filler strips wasting what could have been useful storage. If you want to go custom, then you only have less than a handful of online options, companies that will make to order in any dimension. For instance, I only wanted an 8 inches deep spice cabinet to allow for greater working room over the counter. My wife and I are pretty serious about cooking from pastries to mains and sides. We want a very serious kitchen. Plus, I'll tall so I needed the room. In any case, if you want something custom your choices online are limited. The big box stores don't really do custom and are just as limited in their options as are the online rta places. Most online rtas offer far cheaply made boxes with construction methods less sturdy. I have found that if I buy cheap, I shouldnt expect my kitchen to hold up past a few years. The finish will fade. The drawers will warp. The joints will open up. The big box stores basically offer the same thing, too. When I go to a big box store to buy something, I do it knowing I probably willl get a year out of it, whether that’s a lawn chair of a power tool. I mean when was the last time you regretting spending too much money on a better grade of power tool? So if you want quality, a better and safer grade building material and much wider choices in sizing then your basically down to three or four options. I went with Arkansas Wood Door and am completely pleased and impressed by the experience. Now I could have spent twice what I did and gone to a small custom shop and gotten the same thing, but I am in to saving money and frankly I enjoy the challenge. AWD worked with me directly. Working up the order and getting the plan for each box just right. If you have never designed and built a kitchen before, there are plenty of tips and guidance on the web and I recommend you heartily research all of the aspects and complications involved. I hit a couple of unexpected bumps. But more about that below. So do your research. For instance you can save a lot of money by building the plinths yourself and only order squared off boxes without the toe kick. By making the platform on which you place the lower cabinets first, you can get that plumb and level, so throwing up the boxes is a breeze. And again, the cabinets are also less expense, a complete all around win. AWD uses an easy system for matching up box parts so assembly was easy. No special tools required. Given the many parts and I used a mix of frameless and face framed cabinets, there was a moment or two when in amongst all the materials I got nervous about having everything I needed, but low and behold, all was right there in the end. I also recommend the concept from French cooking "mis en place" that is have all your ingredients in place and all your tools where you need them before starting out. Also, it was a lot easier to work with my wife than doing it alone, but I did a few by myself and so if that is your only option than you should have no problem. I've assembled a lot of cheaper Swedish flat packed furniture in my day, and the quality and sturdiness of AWD leaves no doubt about how long these will last. Just rock solid. Great thing about AWD is the cost to quality ratio. Cant beat it. Which also means if you make a mistake the replacement is so reasonable it becomes not big deal. I mis-measured one box and so I needed to order the right size. Worked out fine, but that was because AWD had an incredibly fast turn around. The other few reliable companies are several weeks to months. And these other places are crazy expensive. And in truth, the other companies are a complete rip off on trim and accessories. AWD pricing was so amenable that my mistakes cost me so little in comparison with what I was saving. So there's a built in confidence for the first timer. Also AWD made one mistake on the placement of a hinge in two doors. They immediately and without question remade them and sent them out in under ten days. You just can't get that service anywhere in the custom cabinet world. It was so affordable I upgraded on one side to black walnut. Trying doing that at the other quality shops. The quality of the roll out drawers and top drawer boxes is superb and the hinges and under-mount sliders are top grade excellent. The hardware was the easiest part frankly. Their system, for lining up the hardware is just so easy. Drill driver is all you need as the placement is already leveled for you. SO: high end quality custom built cabinets, superior custom support, fastest turnaround in the marketplace, most affordable pricing out there, excellent hardware, and oh yeah, I almost forget, color choices. They offer complete line of lacquer - just pick a SW color and they'll match it. SO completely and truly custom for a fraction of cost without sacrificing any quality. The Rev. Philip Carr-Jones"

"Demolished entire bathroom and kitchen. Opened a doorway into 8' span to create open concept kitchen/livingroom. Re-built bathroom from studs out, including plumbing, new tile floor, new window, new walls, new sheetrock finish, paint, electrical, tub/shower tile-surround, new vanity/sink. In kitchen built new enclosure and brought water for refrigerator, stripped, sanded, painted old cabinetry, stone/glass tile/stainless backsplash, tiled new countertop, installed granite sink, hooked up all new appliances, including garbage disposal, dishwasher, faucet, refrigerator, stove, oven, etc.  Built new multi-purpose room in an old storage area at back of house.  Replaced and trimmed out back exterior door.  Completed new flooring throughout the home.  Intsalled 6" baseboard throughout the house.  Installed rececessed lighting and some track lighting.
Greg Hanrahan, his wife, and his crew were the perfectly selected contractors for us to work with.  We are a husband/wife team who have done a lot of construction and remodeling ourselves in the past and we wanted to find a contractor who would take the time to work hand-in-hand with us, allowing us to make decisions and changes along the way.  This was hard to find.  We called for four bids and only Absolute Solutions came back with a bid.  We believe that others did not bid because we wanted to provide most of the materials and that is a difficult situation for a contractor to work with.  Because we had experience with this type of work, the two of us had calculated what we thought (individually) the bid should be.  When we received Greg's bid, we had to laugh because he was within a couple of hundred dollars on a large project to that we had estimated to be fair for the labor we were requesting.  While working with us, Greg asked nearly every day if we were happy with the work or if there were any problems.  When small things popped up (as we would expect in such a large undertaking), we would simply tell Greg and he responded with the Nordstrom approach (the customer is always right attitude) and took care of the minor concerns.  We have never worked with a contractor who did not roll their eyes or say their way was better (even though sometimes it probably is), but whose main purpose was to do the job the way we wanted it done.  This relationship was a joy!
In the middle of the job we decided to remodel the back room because it would be the only room not refinished in the house.  We gave Greg the scope of the request and within a day he gave us what it would cost for the add-on.  We realize this extended his time at this job, which is h****** a contractor, but he completed the extra work with a smile and again, a fair price.
Greg allowed us to pick and buy our supplies.  We did not do this to take money out of his pocket, but because we wanted to shop and make our own idiosyncratic decisions on decor.  He never complained if we bought the wrong type of merchandise; he just explained and sent us to get the right thing, or in some cases, picked the item up himself to speed the process and then gave us the receipt to reimburse him.  Again, this was done with a smile.  If he was annoyed, he kept his professional face on and just completed the work.  One example was when he installed the new kitchen faucet.  It came with a faceplate in the box.  I did not want that installed, and when he showed me the installed product, I wasn't 100% sold on how it looked, but didn't realize it was because the plate was on.  When I went home that night, it hit me what was "off".  I sent him an e-mail immediately to try to reach him before the waterlines were connected, etc. and told him I did not want the plate installed.  Without a word of complaint, he removed it the next morning.  These kinds of little things happened throughout the process.  Because he allowed us to be so hands-on, we saw small things that probably drove him crazy, but he smiled and altered them to create the remodel job we wanted.
Greg was also VERY easy to communicate with.  We could e-mail him and he responded within an hour.  We could call him on his cell phone and he answered every time.  This is highly unusual in the world of contractors.  It is normally very difficult to make contact with your contractor directly.
What we also enjoyed about our working relationship was that Greg, himself, did the work and was on the jobsite every single day!  Even in he had his superb electrician Glenn working with him, Greg was present.  When he had helpers (Mike and Ty) laying the laminate, he was there.  He had a hand in every part of the job.  He knows structure, framing, sheetrocking, tiling, etc., etc.  This is unusual and much, much appreciated.  So many companies use subs and then do not take full responsibility for the work of the subs.  Greg owns the company, is the boss, and gives constant direction and takes responsibility for his crew's work. He never made excuses, he made fixes.
As we finished the job, we could see the pride on Greg's face of a job well-done--he actually cared!  When we gave him the "pin" list of little things to accomplish before he left, he just took the list (again with a smile) and attacked the little list.  He finished them before he expected to be paid.  In the end, we had a 10% coupon from Angie's list, but did not ask for the discount because the service rendered was exactly what we had asked for and the original bid was exactly what we felt the work was worth.  We have forged an excellent client/contractor relationship and if Greg will have us, we will be using him on our next big project.
A side note:  We hired Absolute to perform this job because we wanted to sell a home we had used as a rental since 1997.  The work would have taken us about six months if we tried to do it ourselves.  We wanted it to be sold quickly.  Our goal was to make it outshine all the other ranch homes in Richland of equal size and rooms.  We listed it ourselves on Craigslist and the first person who looked at it has entered into a contract with us to purchase.  We have others calling us back asking if it is still available.  We have Greg and his willingness to work with us on our terms to thank for our success.

"After removing all the cabinet doors, they began prepping the outside of the cabinets. And then began cutting and gluing, which is a white laminate, to the outside.  Their application and cutting were very precise and very well done.  All doors and hardware were attached.

Next they proceeded with the countertops.  Since we were not installing granite, just new Formica, they were able the remove the old Formica and then lay the new on the existing base.

They then proceeded to install the new garbage disposal, double sink and faucet set.

The product is holding up very well.  I was a bit leery of going with white, but that's what I wanted, and I am extremely pleased at how easy it is to keep clean.  It still looks brand new!

We have nothing but praise for Sears and their personnel.  The saleslady was extremely helpful in guiding me to make the right choices.  As I said previously, we are also very pleased with the installers.  They would be welcomed into our home for more work if needed.

They did a complete and excellent cleanup, including hauling away the old cabinet doors for disposal.  Overall, I think the job took only two (or three) days.

Overall we are extremely pleased with the job.  Not only has it added value to our home, but it has added value to our enjoyment of our home.

Price wise, they were over two other estimates.  However, those were individual contractors; we weren't able to check them out. The extra we paid was well worth the security we felt by dealing with a well known company and knowing if a problem occurred, they would make it right.  The difference in the estimates was only about $2,000.00."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

"The Salesman was very informative and friendly. This is a great local Family company. I was quoted a great price, and financing was easily available. The line of windows and patio doors are outstanding. I have noticed a big difference in my heating bills. The outside noise is suppressed. The window installers were professional and did a fantastic job. They also did a great job in the cleanup. I would recommend this Company to everyone."

FAQs for doors (exterior) installation and replacement projects in Hermiston, OR

If your entry bakes in direct sun, fiberglass is the clear winner. The material shrugs off extreme heat, stays energy-efficient, and won’t warp or fade the way wood sometimes can. Paired with low-E or UV-blocking glass, a quality fiberglass door keeps hot air out, cool air in, and should serve you reliably for roughly two decades.

A seasoned door pro can hang a replacement door in two to four hours—mounting the slab, tweaking the fit, and adding hinges, knobs, and weatherstripping. If the jamb needs repairs or you’re cutting a brand-new opening, plan on extra time so everything lines up and seals tightly. Either way, most projects wrap up in a single afternoon.
