"One screw type pier installed. 2 workers hand dug hole below bottom of foundation. Cleaned out under foundation for platform. Although foundation was deeper than I thought, the hole was done much better and quicker than I envisioned. Pier was screwed at bottom of hole with a hydraulic motor. Once limit on hydraulic pressure was reached, the pier was cut at proper level, platform installed, and cracked section of foundation was raised with a hydraulic jack. Crack in stonework closed up nicely without going too far and creating additional cracks. Workers had 5 and 15 years experience doing this work. Very professional and did a very nice job every step of the way. Note that I (homeowner) chose to move and reinstall landscaping stones and gutter drain. Also, tuckpointing/repairing the cracks was not included in the quote. I plan to do that myself at a later date."

"I contacted Don at Precision Built Construction on a recommendation and it was the best call I have ever made.
Don came to my house the next day to look at my roof. He introduced himself, gave me his business card, and we spoke about the issues I was having with the roof and what my expectations were for the completed project. Then he did the first thing that impressed me. He actually climbed up on the roof to look at it. I had already had 3 other contractors come and give estimates and not one of them had gotten up on the roof to look at it. After a thorough inspection he informed me that there were 2 layers of shingles on the house, not just one like the other contractors had stated. I would have had a huge increase in the price of labor if I would have chosen one of the other contractors when they found the second layer of shingles. That was the first savings he gave me. The second savings I received from him actually may have cost a couple hundred dollars up front, but will be a huge savings in the long run. Don built the house next door to mine and was very familiar with the high wind conditions on top of the hill that my house sits on. I had chosen 3 tab shingles because that was what was already there. He asked if I had considered Dimensional shingles due to the high winds then he not only told me, but showed me using samples why Dimesnional shingles would be better on my house. This led me to change my mind and pay a bit more up front and not have to replace shingles torn off by the wind.
Two days later, Don hand delivered the quote for the roof and explained exactly how the work would be done. He used laborers to tear off the old roof, but he alone would put the new shingles on because he wanted to make sure that they were all nailed on correctly. He told me that he would begin the work on Friday morning if I accepted his offer, which I did. His price was very competative and I liked his attitude. I didn't feel that because he was doing buisness with a woman that he ever tried to take advantage of me of over charge for anything. True to his word he showed up on Friday morning with his crew ready to work. The roof was removed in sections exactly how Don said it would be and he alone put on the new shingles. One day it was very cold and rainy and I expected Don to call and tell me he would not be there that day, or just not show up, but to my surprise he worked on the roof all day to get it completed on schedule. There were a few added obsticles to the roofing job. First it is an old farm house that has lightning rods on the roof. One contractor absolutely refused to replace them if they got the job. Don put all of the rods back exactly where they were originally placed and there have not been any leaking issues. He also moved a bathroom vent pipe over for me which was not part of the roof job, but I asked if he would fix while he was up there.
The overall look of the roof is stunning and my yard was spotless when the job was complete. I only found 1 old roofing nail in the yard after he left. I paid 50% of the cost the day before the job began and the remainder when it was complete. There were no surprises or added costs except for about $45 in board replacement that was not visible until the old roof was stripped and then I was only charged for the amount of the board that he used, not the entire board.
I was so impressed that I recommended him to my boss who needed his roof replaced. He came into work after his roof was finished and could not say enough good things about his new roof and experience with Don.
I called Don back in late October to see if he would be available to roof another house I own in Bay City, a two hour commute each way from Gaylord, that required 28 square of shingles on a 10/12 pitch. I purchased all of the materials and had them roof top delivered. Don unloaded all of the shingles and finished that Job by himself in just 4 days. There were 4 square of shingles left over from the job. A shady contractor could have returned those shingles and pocketed the $451. Don called me and asked if I wanted him to return the shingles since they were already in the back of his truck. I told him that would be great and the sales person called me as soon as Don dropped off the shingles and credited the amount back to my card.
I now have him working on a roof, bathroom floor and wall repair, door replacement, and porch replacement on another rental I own. He is the only contractor I will ever use from now on and I highly recommend him to anyone needing work completed. Don is honest, very professional and takes extreme pride in his work. He has somewhere close to 30 years of building experience and is not a builder who just studied and took a test to get his license. He is the real deal from begining to end. Don't let the fact that this is a small business scare you away. Don will complete your project quicker and more professionally than most big companies with a very competative bid. He will be there everyday until the job is finished. He will not start the job then disapprar for 2 weeks before he gets back to your job.
"

"My back yard was very uneven and lumpy and was about 4-6 higher than the sidewalk. They removed the fire pit and clothes line bracket, scraped and leveled the back yard. They worked with the sprinkler company who had to come and extend the line and add a head. They had to remove a number of roots from trees previously removed that were buried. Reinstalled the fire pit in a different location and the clothes line bracket. In the front yard pulled back a mulch bed to scrape and level next to the driveway, replaced the mulch bed and scraped the ditch to give me a easier slope for cutting the grass. Put down topsoil, had a very nice even grade. Came back the next day and put down the Hydro seed. Gave me 2 pages of instructions on how to maintain the new and quot;babyand quot; grass that would come up. They were very courteous, answered all my questions during the process and when finished asked if I had any other questions . A pleasure to work with. I was very pleased with their attention to detail in both the work and the clean up. Cutting my grass just got a lot easier.
"

"Their representative called me within 2 hours. When I explained the problem, he advised me as to what I should and that it was really a landscaping job. I really appreciated their quick response and his honesty - even though they did not get any business out of it."

"Overall I was extremely pleased and satisfied with the outcome. From a construction standpoint, everything was completed as requested. The quality of work was excellent and timely. The work was done in the winter months and the crew and work-site were kept very clean. The outcome was excellent and the addition turned out beautiful.
But what made the most difference was Gary Harms himself. Unlike most builders, Gary is very customer focused and detailed orientated. He keeps you informed every step of the way so you don't have to wonder what is being done. He makes suggestions/recommendations along the way so that you can make sure the work that is completed is to your liking. He is always accessible and available when needed. This was very important for me because this is a cabin and I am not at the home regularly to inspect the work. With Gary you don't have to worry about what is going on, he will make sure you are informed, and most importantly, happy! He also did a lot of "custom" work that he suggested and all of it turned out fantastic. Much of it was done by Gary himself which proves his commitment to quality work.
I would recommend Harms Enterprises for any building/construction job!"

"I contracted Marc Todd himself and set up appointment for him to come over to measure and view the proposed project to provide me with an estimate. It was a little confusing at first, as he has a brother doing business as Jeff Todd Concrete.
Marc Todd was very prompt, and came out the very next day after I made contact. I was very comfortable with him right from the first meeting. He was very kind, professional and just plain and simple, A VERY NICE MAN !! He listened well to what I wanted to achieve as far as an end result which also included troubleshooting an ongoing water problem. This water problem had not been solved by our last concrete contractor. Marc was very much more knowledgeable, and seemed to effortlessly troubleshoot and ultimately FIX the water problem.
I asked him for references of prior jobs, and he gladly took me right to the places of other concrete pours that he had done. I was extremely impressed with not only the amount of concrete work he had poured in my area and the excellent looking work he had preformed, but was most impressed with how well liked he was by his previous customers. All of them greeted him like he was a longtime friend or family member. I knew when you have that kind of rapport with people you can't go wrong. And I was right as I am now one of his satisfied customers that truly look forward to running into him and getting a chance to visit.
I had four estimates done all together, and his was not the cheapest , but it was no the most expensive either. His price was within reason when compared to the others. I feel that I actually got a much better job than I would have going with someone else for sure. You get what you pay for and in this case I feel like I got a bit more.
He did an excellent job on my project and more. It is gorgeous. He actually came up with a few better design solutions than I originally had planned. AND NO MORE WATER PROBLEM. He stayed within in his original estimate, even though he made a upgraded change that would be better for my situation. He completed the work on time as well and worked hard at "fitting me into his schedule" as I had a party planned that I needed it completed by. He was TERRIFIC to work with. The best contractor I have EVER done business with actually. By the time he finished his job our whole family just loved him !! A GREAT PERSON that really cares !!
I will be using him again next summer for another project we are now planning. I have recommended him since to some friends of mine, and they are just as pleased with their whole experience and with MARC TODD CONCRETE AND MARC TODD AS WELL. I recommend him 100% and I am a very "fussy" customer to please.
"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Higgins-lake, MI

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
