"We have a two-level basement. They installed a pipe in each level of our basement. They were able to run the entire system from the basement through the attic and out the roof because we had access to an opening in an interior wall. Because of this they did not have to attach the pipe to the outside wall of the house and this makes it look like it was installed when the house was built. Work was completed in less than 6 hours. We chose Radon Solutions because the price was lower than another estimate. I have no complaints about the work they did and am impressed by how they did it. <br />"

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"I called American Inspections on a Tuesday, left them a message, and told them I needed an inspection within a week. I received a phone call that day and Steve was able to squeeze me into his schedule. He put in the radon test on Friday and to read it on Monday for our appointment. The appointment was at 4pm and he was already inside and working when I arrived on time. The appointment lasted about 2.5 hours. Steve was very thorough in every room. He explained everything he was looking for in an older home and asked me if I had questions. He was knowledgeable about the history of the houses built in the neighborhood. He gave me suggestions about improving the safety of the house when I asked. He was very nice and personable. I would definitely recommend his service to anyone. <br />"

"Andrew was great, responsive and wonderful to work with.  <br /> Our Agent had recommended other inspectors, but after a week of getting jerked around by one guy about scheduling and finding poor reviews for others... We reached out to other contacts. Our friends recommended Andrew to us and Angie's list backed up his reputation. When we called to schedule, he was able to work us in within a week. He was very thorough and provided us with a complete spiral bound copy of our inspection report including photos and diagrams regarding maintenance areas. As new prospective homeowners, we also appreciated the great information he provided regarding what we should expect for lifetime maintenance and a list of companies that he vouched for should we need someone (i.e. contractors, handy-man, his insurance agent.) He also set up the Radon inspection and had it completed before our home inspection date, so we didn't have to worry about scheduling and fitting it in before closing. <br /> Overall, I would recommend Andrew with A Closer Look, LLC. to anyone needing a home inspection. <br />"

"Quality work with a lifetime guarantee on no cracks and a dry basement. I originally had a problem with the way an employee explained the warranty to me. She indicated that it was void because I had not contacted the company within 30 of my brother's death. However, a spokesperson from the company today told me that that was incorrect information. They are restoring the lifetime warranty in my name at no charge. I am pleased with how they handled my complaint."

"<p>David Manley came to our home and assessed the need for a radon system.  We had previously tested our home ourselves and the results were high.  He was very personable and professional and presented his product carefully.  </p> <p>The system was installed in early March.  After 24 hours, our home was tested.  The result was below the US EPA action level for indoor radon, but not well below.  </p> <p>We called David and he too was not satisfied with the result..  He and his crew came back within a few days and installed a second vent pipe.  This was done at no additional cost to us and the level is now well below 4.0. </p> <p>The company was very careful during installation to vacuum constantly so there was no dust.  There installation work was neatly done. </p> <p>This is an honest company and one with whom we would work again. .  </p> <br />"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Iowa City, IA

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
