"Tyler did a fantastic job sanding and refinishing our old, painted, wide plank pine floors. They had several coats of paint on them and had several cobbled repairs in them, we were unsure how they would turn out. Tyler was slightly hesitant to take on painted floors, but we assured him we did not have very high expectations, and would be very happy just having the ugly paint GONE. Long story short, the floors look awesome! They are southern yellow pine, (we think) and Tyler used a clear water based finish. We couldn't be happier! Tyler is great to work with. He is hard working, polite, professional, knowledgeable and has incredible attention to detail. He completed the job on time and on budget. I would recommend Tyler without reservation. Our crummy looking painted pine floors are now beautiful. Thank you Tyler!"

FAQs for wood flooring refinish projects in Iowa City, IA

Rental sanders can address moderate surface damage, but their effectiveness depends on scratch depth and overall floor condition. Drum sanders offer the most aggressive removal capability for deeper imperfections. However, if the damage extends into the wood structure or affects large portions of the floor, board replacement by an expert might be necessary before sanding. Consult a flooring professional for help.

Always thoroughly review the manufacturer's operating instructions before starting. Wear appropriate safety gear, including goggles to protect your eyes and a respirator to prevent inhalation of dust. Inspect electrical components before each use to prevent shock hazards. Keep children and pets away from the work area, and maintain a clean space by frequently vacuuming dust accumulation to prevent slipping and to ensure you can see well.

Sandpaper requirements depend on floor size, condition, and the sanding approach. Plan to use multiple grit levels (coarse, medium, and fine) with at least one to two sheets per 100 square feet for each grit. Floors with significant damage or multiple finish layers will require more coarse-grit sheets. Purchase extra supplies before beginning because running out mid-project can cause visible inconsistencies in the final result.
