When I answered, their initial sales pitch was that they had just completed a job in the neighborhood — a tactic that shows if you hire them, they will harass your neighbors to drum up more work. I confronted them immediately and informed them they were in violation of Madison Heights Ordinance §7-68, which explicitly prohibits soliciting at any residence displaying a “No Soliciting” sign — permit or not. The two clearly knew they were in the wrong, because as soon as I told them I was calling the police, they stopped knocking on doors and fled straight to their car a couple blocks away. I followed them to obtain their license plate number and encountered their supervisor, another white male, who argued aggressively, insisting their permit allowed them to ignore “No Soliciting” signs — a completely false claim and a clear display of ignorance of the law. The supervisor’s behavior was arrogant and unprofessional, defending conduct that is plainly illegal under the city ordinance.
