"Our roof was in major need of repair due simply to weathering and age. After receiving several outrageous repair quotes, I remembered seeing a large sign on a wall advertising Union Roofers. I figured that I had nothing to lose, so I might as well give them a call. Patrick from Union Roofers came to our home to survey the extent of the damage and to provide a free estimate of all repairs needed. He was very professional and thorough with his assessment; he explained exactly what needed to be done to restore integrity and soundness to my roof. The day after Christmas, I received a courtesy call alerting me that they were on their way . They immediately began working upon arrival. They took pictures before, during, and after the repair work. I had the opportunity to meet their boss Frank, who made it a point to be on site to meet with me, the client, to review our contract, pricing and to set my mind at ease. Frank was super kind and professional. More importantly, there were no surprises in terms of price. Everything that he said needed to done was also quoted by the other outrageously priced roofers. Union Roofers has displayed an unparalleled level of professionalism coupled quality work and all at an affordable price. If you are in need of roof work, and you are looking for company that exhibits quality, integrity, professionalism and fair pricing, I highly and wholeheartedly recommend Union Roofers. They restored my roof and I am a happy camper. E Edwards"

"We finally gave up on constantly maintaining our ‘builders quality’ original York HVAC and heater. The heater worked fine if inefficient, but the AC coils had a leak which was not divulged when we bought the 8 year old house. When we bought it the owners must have just charged it up, so the slow leak wouldn’t be discovered until a full year later when we went to start up the AC the next summer. The problem was ours to handle now and seeing that we had other problems to deal with, it was never in the budget to do more than just get it recharged year after year. Regulations changed, refrigerant changed, time aged the system, and parts became scarce. Finally after 11 years of dealing with it and tinkering with the concept of replacing the entire thing, we decided the time to do it was summer 2015 (yes a year + ago). We obtained quotes from our regular HVAC repair company, as well as Horizon, and Green Electric, Heating & Cooling. We tried to obtain quotes for everything as comparable as possible. Min 95% efficiency, 100k BTU Heater 3.5 to 4 ton Coil with 16 Seer Puron Condensing Unit 50 gallon Water Heater (replaced the first one when we just moved in 2003) The Green representative was very professional and friendly. He pointed out the options and listened to my concerns without making me feel like he needed to be somewhere else. Horizon sent some guy that was a little bit cocky but knew his stuff. I am familiar with the Horizon company but have never given them any work to this day. Our regular HVAC guy did everything by phone since we had been going back and forth for a few years discussing the available options, but his tech was getting a bit on the old side and his efficiency ratings were not quite what we wanted once we tried to balance everything out between offers. Our normal guy offered Ruud. Horizon offered Lennox. Green offered Bryant. Everyone offered the same Bradley White water heater, but I toyed with the idea of a higher efficiency model which required a powered vent and dedicated pipes to the outside. After all the quotes were obtained, we began to get high pressure calls from Horizon where they were offering a discount if we come to a decision “NOW”! Apparently they had a team ready to do an install, but it was cancelled and they wanted to do something to fill the time. We don’t react to high pressure situations, and immediately crossed them off the list. I received a call from a manager a few days later and described the situation in detail. He was not happy with what I told him regarding his employee behaviors. So is life. My wife and I deliberated for a bit longer, made best and final requests to obtain better pricing and confirm certain things would be done, and then locked in with Green. We decided on the following: 97% efficiency, 100k BTU heater, infinitely variable heat (not single or two stage). Infinitely variable fan. 4 ton evaporator coil. 3.5ton 16 seer condensing unit, single stage, but we got the ultra quiet version. You can stand 2 feet away from it and talk with someone at normal volume. It is silent from 10 feet away. Standard 50 gallon water heater. We set a date and then proceeded to cross our fingers that we made the right decision. Things moved very quickly after that. This was going to be a full swap out which required bringing everything to current township regulations. This meant PVC piping to the exterior foundation wall for the high efficiency furnace, new valves and switches, new copper lines, extra ductwork and dampers, new outdoor pad for the new condensing unit, and a new thermostat. They showed up bright and early in the morning. 2 guys started the teardown. They asked me a few simple questions about if I wanted the Heating unit at the same elevation and the preferred “front” orientation of the heater. Later for the pipe routing of the heater vents, we had to move boxes out of the way so they could drill large holes for the PVC pipe. None of this was an issue. The old unit was ripped out and taken away as if it was never there, and very cleanly and without drama. Then while the ductwork was opened, they educated me in the damper system that was installed in our ductwork that may cause air distribution issues, and then showed me how to adjust it seasonally. The builders installed a damper above the heater that 30% blocked the exit flow. This damper is there to balance out the upstairs in the summer and winter. It was near impossible to see without someone pointing it out as the handle was between other ductwork. It was very educational. They also noticed what they called a “short circuit” in the ductwork. There was a duct return that came into a header in a narrow duct but the expansion was about 2 feet down further. They moved the flex hose of the return to the expansion just to help balance out the flow. Again, very educational. There was no extra cost or fanfare with this. About 6 hours into the build, another person showed up to help. He immediately started on the hot water heater. The old one had no issues but it was 10 years old. This was a quick swap as we decided not to go with the high efficiency model with the powered vent, since it would require cutting two more holes in the foundation wall. About 8 hours after they started, they were cleaning up. They helped push all the boxes back for me, swept the floors, and proceeded to show me the awesome Bryant HVAC control. It is wifi enabled and can be controlled remotely via an app on your phone. And I do mean FULL control. Full programming, full error reporting, full adjustments of all profiles. The color touch screen looks great and the app duplicates the screen perfectly, so there is no re-learning how to do the things you need. It is also one of those thermostats where you set the high and low points and it will keep the temperature in that range. No longer do you have to switch from “hot” to “cool”. It also has the installer phone number programmed into it, and has full diagnostic self-checking capabilities so it can send a call for help should it need it. It can also report the weather forecast. In a word, it is “wonderful”. Overall, we are extremely satisfied. We have used the AC for two seasons now and the heater for one season so far. I cannot say the electric bills have gotten lower, and the primary reason for that is that we now use it ALL THE TIME. The condensing unit does not struggle to get the temp where we want it. But since the house is drafty, it runs frequently. The old unit we would just shut it off for days at a time if we could bear with the heat as it would run all day long, so in theory it was cheaper since we shut it down. Our gas bill has gone down 30% when compared to the same period last year. I am very satisfied with the installation crew, the installation itself, and the functionality of the installed system. About one year later, I realized I completely forgot I needed to get the township to inspect the installation. The inspector came out and found the tiniest problem. Apparently kids like to huff Puron. The outdoor fill ports on the condensing unit needed these little colorful locking caps installed. Because of this I did not pass inspection and called Green to remedy the situation. They were out within 24 hours and installed the caps. No charge, no fuss. The inspector came back, and gave everything a clean bill of health. He also personally told me without my provoking, that my installation is one of the best he has seen in the county. He specifically pointed out how clean the install was, and the use of full pvc schedule 40 pipe, all glued, for the heater vents as something he sees other installers cheapen out on. He was impressed. I continue to be."

"We had a 5" gutter and the guards were not affected because we have a large Maple tree.  The guy that came to do the work said that we needed a larger gutter due to the roof overhang.  He sold us a 6" heavier gauge metal.  In talking with other people, two other providers said that the gutters are larger and heavier than what we needed.  I feel like we didn't need these upgraded gutters that he sold to us.

He cleaned up very well.  We just didn't feel like this was a good cost for what we received."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Lawnside, NJ

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
