The job took a day to do and it was all coordinated over email because of my schedule. I just left the gate unlock. It looks great and is everything I imagined. "It took several weeks to schedule the appointment (Big Deal purchased on June 7; appointment was for July 10.) However, the crew showed up on time. But to my deep disappointment, there were some missed items from the priority list and other problems. Below is the email I sent to them on July 27, after the work was done. I also provided photos to support my email concerns. (see below) As of the date of this review, I have not received a response to my email, which really concerns me because the priority work as requested was not completed. And we have been extremely busy with elder care, leaving no time for yard care, which is the reason I used Angie's List in the first place. Email Sent July 27, 2017 @3:25PM Hi Jake – My apologies for this delayed message. I have been getting my Mother settled now that she is out of the hospital and I’ve been under the weather too. Overall, your crew did a nice job cleaning up my front beds and trimming the barberries, except that they missed a major bed. The bed in front of the house with the birch tree was not touched at all. It needs to be cleaned out and edged. I spoke to Mark during the job and he advised me that the weed liner in the bed closest to the street with the large rock should be removed. The liner was old and degraded. I asked would he have the time to remove the liner but only after everything else was done? He said yes. Well, the liner is gone, but the one other priority bed in front of the house was not done. And that is something I cannot physically do. Also, one perennial and two vincas were mistakenly removed from the large bed with the mailbox. I personally planted three vincas around the flat rock, but only one remains. (see photo) Two had not flowered yet, but your crew should know the difference between a weed and a flower. (That is why I don’t have Steve clean up the weeds.) Also, a small perennial bush was also removed, planted only a foot or two from the vincas. I don’t know the name, but it is the same bush that is behind the large rock. (See photo) In that same bed with the large rock, the solar landscape lights that highlight the rock and the decorative ball lights behind the rock were not reinstalled. Please come back and clean out the birch tree bed and set-up the landscape lights and balls in the rock bed as part of my deal. I will replace the plants. "I contacted Mark's Lawn and Landscape in late March 2018 about installing a paver foundation ( 12 by 16) for a shed. I made an appointment for early morning and Mark was right on time traveling from Halethorpe to Laurel. Note that the four other firms I called said that for such a small job there was no need for a site inspection prior to the work starting. Mark quickly gave me an estimate and a time frame for when he could complete the work. For the rest of the day my thought was that maybe I could find a contractor who might do the work for somewhat less money. About three days later Mark's proposal came and the cost to do the work was exactly what he quoted and I knew then that I would give him the job. When Mark and his crew came to do the work he recommended a different location for the foundation than mine and I was pleased after taking his recommendation. Mark's crew did an excellent job installing a perfectly level foundation in a day's time and grading the area around the foundation. I asked Mark to inspect the job after completion and he said he would certainly do this. Yes, this was a small job but I was so pleased with Mark's attentiveness to my needs and requests."

"Mulch and trimming were done right away and looked very nice, although some weeds have sprouted up from the mulched area.



Installation of pavers took 3 months to even begin, but it was done in one day. The constant rain played a part for the delay, but I did feel that the project was on the back burner. We wanted the pavers to match the patio pavers in color. We went with his recommendations. The pavers do not match - appear the same color of cement pavement. Upon inquiry, was told that they had heard that a lot and that it will take a few months and color may change. The installation looks great but we are very disappointed with the color and hope it does change to match the patio. I will respond back in a few months and let you know if pavers did change color.

"We contracted Ben, the owner of Freestate Tree Service to remove the Silver Maple in our front yard. We used Ben because he did a fine job for us two years ago after we selected his company based on  Angie's List reviews.

The job included tree removal, stump grinding, complete chip/grindings removal, topsoil seed & straw for $1,600. The tree cutting took place in late December, 2015. I paid Ben in full (which included $150 for stump grinding and removal). This was indeed a mistake on my part thinking that he would honorably finish the job! The grinding was subcontracted and took place a couple weeks after that. As an additional service, I contracted with Ben to also split the wood for firewood (which he insisted be a separate cash only service). Even though the yard was basically trashed while he and his crew split the wood, I paid him the agreed amount of $200 for the splitting and even gave him a $50 tip! That same day, I was told by and understood that Freestate would not be responsible for the lawn damage caused from the splitting machines as this was not part of our original contract. I still wanted the grindings removed as originally contracted and paid for. Several weeks of bad weather justifiably prevented him from returning to remove the grindings. We also understood his reasons for additional delays because he was undergoing equipment maintenance. After multiple attempts to schedule with him, he simply returned unexpectedly to my house one day in April and managed to only rake all the grindings back into the stump hole. Not only did he not remove all the grindings, his equipment trashed my yard even more than than he did before! Then he emailed me that this  was my fault as, what he called me, a "misinformed homeowner" for making him come out when we did rather than wait for "the ground to freeze"?! At this point, it will cost me hundreds of $$ to rent the equipment rental needed to remove the grindings that i paid Freestate to remove and repair the damages I was left with. Not to mention that he was paid for a service he didn't provide to satisfaction. He has been ignoring the multiple emails and phone calls from both me and my wife to rectify or remedy this situation. 

if you're looking for simple tree cutting, Ben's your guy. If you want them to follow through with a complete job - forget Freestate and go with somebody else. Such a shame, we wanted this to end well. Live and learn.

"3 man crew showed up on time & went right to work cutting down the stock & carried it away. The grinder showed up later & ground the stump well below ground level. He was more than willing to clean up the mess , but we told him we would take care of it. My neighbor had two stumps in his yard & asked if he could grind them down. He called his boss & got permission to do it & my neighbor was very satisfied with the job & the price. I thought that was pretty nice of the company to do that since the grinder guy had a very busy schedule that day."
