Customers say: Quick response

"we initially inquired with HG Landscaping for sod, but after talking to Hector, we decided to go with HG for the sprinkler system, sod and wood fence. Hector gave us confidence in his work from day one by showing us mock up photos of what our yard could look like. He started the job quickly (other contractors would bid and schedule us weeks to months out). He showed up as scheduled and would get as much as he could finished in the day. sHe worked with our ideas and incorporated his own expertise to make our new yard beautiful and functional. Hector and his crew are very personable and respectful. We would happily recommend them to anyone with landscaping needs."

"Derek and his crew were professional, easy to work with and extremely hard working even in the heat of the summer.  They made changes as requested, offered invaluable input on what would look good, and what would not work. They started and finished in a reasonable time frame with only a few unavoidable mechanical glitches.  They were respectful of our privacy and our property.  They worked harder than any group of workers I've seen in this neighborhood.  I have had them back once for an additional project ans I have another scheduled for after the summer season.  I would highly recommend Derek for any project big or small in his field.of expertise.

"Cruz is extremely easy to work with and very patient!! He has completed two yard re-do's for me so far and has just started a third. His first job that he did for me was to remove old sod in the back yard and then before he put new sod down he put in curbing to help separate the flowerbed from the lawn area. Looks great!! Second project was a little more challenging as the ground had different levels. The old sod was on a slope and I wasn't sure what to do with that. Cruz brought in some different products to give me ideas on what I might want. We settled on railroad ties in part of the sloped area and large landscape stones for the rest. For the level area he installed over 70- 16 X 16 red stepping stones in a diamond pattern with gravel in-between. That really set off the front area and every time I look at it I am even more pleased with the job he did. He also added some curbing to separate a small flowerbed area from a section of lawn. He has just started on his third project for me and also the largest. First he is removing all the old sod. When he is finished with that I hope to have one section done in a cement slab for a small patio. I also want him to do some curbing to separate areas that I want sodded and non-sodded. Hopefully this project will turn out as nice as the rest of the work that he has done for me. His main goals have always been to have the projects come out to "MY" liking. "Thank You Cruz for all your hard work"...JanB"

"Jeb Showed up on time.  He was friendly, professional and very clear about what needed to be done. He brought in a small backhoe that could move around the edge of the pond and was exceedingly careful of trees and stepping stones.  His helper called in sick so it took him two days but he never quibbled about price, even though the job and the muck turned out to be much more than he had bargained for.  I loaned him a couple of tools.  He was careful to clean the worksite each day, clean the tools, put everything where I asked him to and there were piles of muck.  I offered an extra hundred to find the drain hole.  That took him two days.  He never gave up, no matter how deep or messy the muck, never swore that I heard, even when his pump let loose and showered him with muck, he just kept on going.  His helper called in sick the next day also so he did this huge job alone.  At the end I asked him if he was finished and he said not until I checked everything and I told him he was finished.  I would highly recommend this man for any landscaping job.  He said he also builds retaining walls, new ponds, entire landscapes, etc.  I see his business has a Facebook page too.  I have another job for him in the near future.

FAQs for sod installation projects in Live Oak, CA

Seeding costs less up front, but you’ll wait months—and sometimes a full season—for the grass to fill in. Sod costs more per square foot, yet it gives you an instant, usable lawn the day it’s installed and needs far less care during the first year.

If speed and early curb appeal matter, the higher sod price is often worth it; if you’re watching every dollar and don’t mind the wait, seed can still be a smart play.

Start by sketching your lawn and breaking it into rectangles or circles. Measure each section, multiply length by width, and then add all the sections together for the total square footage. Standard sod rolls are two feet by 1.5 feet, and one pallet covers 450 square feet.

Divide your total area by 450 to see how many pallets you need, then round up—extras come in handy for cutting around curves or mistakes. Still unsure? A local sod supplier or installer can confirm your math before you order.

Most sod grips the soil within 10 to 14 days. During that stretch, keep foot traffic to a minimum and mow only if the grass gets tall. After two weeks, the roots should be strong enough for light use, but wait six weeks before heavy play or frequent mowing. Giving the grass that short honeymoon helps it anchor firmly and sets the stage for a durable, healthy lawn.

Give your new lawn two full weeks before any foot traffic, then stick to light use only. Hold off on vigorous play, parties, or regular mowing until the six-week mark so the roots can dig deep. Keep watering on schedule and watch for any dry patches. A little patience now means stronger turf and fewer repairs later.

Keep an eye on color, moisture, and even growth. Fresh sod should stay uniformly green; brown spots or gaps hint at dry soil or poor contact. Water deeply at least once a day for the first week (more in hot weather) and back off gradually after the roots take. Avoid heavy foot traffic until the grass feels firmly anchored. Quick attention to trouble spots now prevents costly patches later.

Aim for spring or early fall when daytime temps hover between 55°F and 80°F. Mild weather and consistent moisture help the roots knit quickly. Laying sod in midsummer can stress the grass, while frozen winter soil blocks rooting altogether.

If you must install outside the ideal window, budget extra time for watering and tending to the turf. Choosing the right season makes the job easier and the lawn tougher.
