"This is my final Review for Gary Stanley, of Stanley Handyman and Remodeling Services; as all jobs are now completed. I had written a review earlier in the process because so much had to be done and was more involved than anticipated. So some of this review may be repetitive. I will say again that Gary Stanley was a Godsend for this older couple with a 30 year old house that had over the years developed issues that we were not able to remedy. We had had a man build our Trex deck and experienced a time and money creep that left us leery of trying to find anyone else. However, we had good luck with Home Advisors/Angi's List for plumbing problems so gave it a try. Gary and one other guy answered withing 30 min. of Request placed. Other guy came with tape measurer and walked around seeing rotten boards and other problems I did not see; and ignoring what I was worried about. Told me he would send an estimate in a few days. Called back to say "they didn't make my kind of siding so would have to replace all with different type"-but no estimate. Gary Stanley came next day-got out of his truck and pulled off his ladder and took the time to actually climb up to check the siding to see what was rotten . Before I mentioned the concrete breaking up at garage door, he had knelt down and was inspecting problem. As we did a walk around for me to tell him all I had on my list. I told him there may be a problem with finding my siding based on other guy. I wanted to replace with Hardie board, but he told me that he could try but angles & size of boards may not match. I could tell from his immediate inspection of the problems and what he would do to fix each one---finally, we got the right guy with experience in all aspects of home building and repairs; carpentry, brickwork, concrete work---Thank You, Lord!! I had read his reviews: hard working, honest as day is long; doesn't quit until job finished; does good work. Big Plus was he is from Arkansas -I am from Georgia so we both spoke Southern! Now when Gary gives an estimate; he will include a phrase" unless there becomes a CATASTROPHIC finding." We were DIYers so we understood that if what seemed a simple repair was found to be more involved to repair that we would be informed and he would go from there. WE were OK with that because from the beginning ; Gary was working to save money for us- example: the iron clean out door was rusted & falling out of the hole in the chimney-I priced new ($85)- but size of hole off standard. Gary took it & refurbished the door and re-mortared it back in place for a fraction of new cost. CATASTROPHIC #1 !!!!!! became the OMG word throughout all the work! The front window repair was a nightmare of unseen rotten support beams that had to be replaced before entire top floor fell through- Gary took every precaution using a jack and series of supports to accomplish this. He re-framed the entire window including better flashing at the top (Andersen Renewal windows 6 yrs old). Replaced insulation, moisture barrier and painstakingly searched to find the right size Cedar board to trim bottom of window as I wanted. CATASTROPHIC #2!! Working on the porch, he discovered that of the 4 existing posts only 1 was bearing weight of whole porch& built in storage room on top!!!!! The railings were cemented into brick wall so removal left ugly area that had to be re-bricked. Gary made two new support posts installed in steel boots and wrapped in Cedar and painted our trim color. We were so relieved to know that issue was solved. In that process, he had noted minor missing sofit pieces and need for paint which he did and told me later. Just took care of little and big things--I noticed my front door was repainted-he said he had paint extra so he just did it and made everything on porch look new---that is his way! CATASTROPHIC #3!!! Repair of porch rooftop-He found that when roofers had replaced our roof in 2016; they had cut the shingles too far back from edge of wall. So flashing was gone and shingles migrated and water had puddled because they had tried to compensated with a dam of caulk and YEP-developed a leak. Gary always stopped and told us what he found and gave his fix and asked how to proceed. My husband, engineer, agreed with him and now all rotted trim, stucco, repaired and he re-shingled about a third of the porch roof making sure shingles installed right and that translated to repair rotten wood in top of porch where leak had occurred. Now, to the siding the other guy said he couldn't find----Gary found it at McCoys!! He also bought a Hardie board because that's what I wanted to replace-but Hardie did not work. So Gary got only siding needed to replace rotten boards. As this is a 2 story house, he put up scaffolding to be able to do the work. Every time I checked he was adding extra paint to blend in old to new and made it all look new. CATASTROPHIC #4!!! While working on side of house, Gary saw that the brick fascade beneath siding was moving. He showed us that he traced the cracks in all of the side which led down to lower wall of garage- from what he discovered and what we knew; it was revealed that our house had foundation problems! We had been unaware of the progression of the settling- Now,we understood we had to get some Foundation people out. Gary proceeded to stabilize the wall which went from bowed out to pulled back in line before he finished the siding repair. He could have just repaired siding and left us unaware of major problem. In each undertaking, I saw that not only was he skilled, but his integrity matched his skill. CATASTROPHIC #5!!-Bricking of Back Bay Window-Due to settling, bricks had actually pulled away from main structure and the mortar was crumbling in top third of structure on 3 sides. First of all, I had saved bricks from our 1984 build but was running short. Gary removed and cleaned bricks and used my extras to repair the entire area. He had to cut bricks at different angles to accommodate the degree of movement of the brick wall which he stabilized. He went the extra mile by applying needed mortar and caulk in areas adjacent to the brickwork he did- again it looks brand new. CATASTROPHIC #6!!! Our Trex deck was built around a growing OAK tree that had a hole for spacing of the tree's growth. But in last 5 years , the tree had pretty much take up space and the hole needed to be enlarged. I ask Gary to enlarge the hole but I was concerned about the Trex material and construction. He researched to find out the type of saw blade and made the cut within consideration of structure beneath the top boards. He found that the original builder had made a wooden box for the tree that sat on the support beams underneath. The positioning of that box led to water damage of that support beam which will need to be replaced but will require removal of some of the Trex Boards--that is scheduled in a month or two and I only trust Gary not to ruin the decking system for the repair! Fortunately, the other repairs went as expected. A Surprise was Gary's ingenious design and build of the cover of our outside HVAC. Evey winter when we have had freezing rains, this unit is located in the area downstream where rain falls down inside unit. The fan freezes up and all interior gets iced up and we have to turn it off to prevent motor burnout. I talked to A/C guy who said the cover had to be at least 4 ft. above unit and open on all sides to allow correct air movement. Gary was concerned about building a shelter from house going into wood siding or brick to hold weight of cover. He did research as we did looking at everything from a BBQ/Grill cover to a Pop-Up cover- We also had to consider our subdivision HOA, Gary designed and built a cover using gray PVC pipe and fittings with a top of light weight plastic sheeting- met all requirements and as was allowed attached to frame of unit to stay in place----Genius!! and didn't cost hundreds of dollars! I found a beautiful oak door that Gary finished , painted and installed for the Water Heater closet. Door was weird size and he had to make modifications to door"

"Jeff was great. We had two other roofing companies make repairs on a leak, and it was not fixed by them. When Jeff came out, he was able to spot a possible problem area right away. The person who did the actual repairs was very thorough. He did find an issue and corrected that problem, did an overall check of the rest of the roof, and corrected some other areas. We were pleased with the company overall."

"I have both good and bad things to say about this experience.  It started well.  Danny came out to give me an estimate and I showed him the 2 bedrooms and kitchen I wanted painted, told him I was either going with blue or yellow (he said yellow would probably take 2 coats, blue might only take 1), and he gave me prices for 1 coat and for 2 coats.  He also said that his guys would move the heavy furniture so long as we moved all the breakable and small stuff and cleared the top shelves on some bookcases.  A week or so later I scheduled the job, and Danny was willing to schedule the work on a Saturday for me because I work full time during the week and wanted to be home during the job, and he did tell me that he personally wouldn't be able to be there.  I confirmed the work to be done both by email and by phone (painting 2 bedrooms and the kitchen, and we even discussed how they would probably need 2 coats of paint because I chose the yellow color.)  I also asked him by email and on the phone if he could recommend a particular paint that might cover in 1 coat instead of 2.  He said with yellow, it usually takes 2 coats, so just buy cheap paint.  I told him I would probably buy the same paint I bought last time, and I couldn't remember (I was at work and the paint was at home) but it was either Sherwin Williams or Pittsburg Paint.   He said he could get a good discount at SW but just a small one at PP.  I also asked him if this job could be completed in the one Saturday we had scheduled, and he said probably yes.  The day before the job, I got a call from Jess to say he would be coming out to do the job for Danny.  The first problem was that Jess was coming alone.  I asked him how he was going to move the furniture by himself because Danny had said the painters would move the furniture for us?  (I have a bad back and my husband is having problems with his shoulder and elbows, so this was important to me).  I also asked him if he could actually paint 3 rooms with 2 coats of paint in one day?  Jess said he thought it was 2 rooms and 1 coat of paint each.  I said no, it wasn't, and that this was probably at least a 2 man job.  I then called Danny.  This phone call went horribly, and I would have canceled the job then if I wasn't in such a jam to get the rooms painted that particular weekend.  (I had carpet people lined up the next weekend, furniture delivery the next weekend, so I really needed the paint job done right away or else it would start a domino effect of problems).  Danny was extremely defensive.  He said he'd never promised to send more than 1 guy out.  I said no, he hadn't, but he did promise that his guys would move the furniture and likely finish in one day, and I didn't see how that was possible with just 1 guy.  And I reminded him that the job was for 3 rooms, probably 2 coats each, and told him that we had discussed this on multiple occasions.  At this point, Danny told me that he didn't remember the estimate that well because he didn't think I was going to hire him when he came to give me an estimate because a couple of years ago he gave me an estimate and I went with someone else.  I can kind of see how he might have forgotten what we talked about during the estimate if he didn't think I was going to hire him, but I followed that up with an email and a phone call to discuss the job again and schedule the work, so I don't see how he got this wrong.  Danny also told me that the last time he came out to give me an estimate a couple of years ago, I told him I went with the cheaper estimate from someone else because I "didn't want his quality in my house."   He said it to me in a tone that implied I had insulted him last time.  This is ridiculous.  I've never said anything like that.  That doesn't even sound like something I'd say.  I'm sure I told him that I was going with the cheaper estimate because this is a starter home, it's not very nice, and we really just wanted the job done for the cheapest price we could find.  I thought I was being nice by contacting him to let him know I was going with another estimate instead of just leaving him hanging, and I tried to explain that in our present circumstances, we were just looking for the cheapest price, but thanks for his time.  Apparently, he was insulted that I went with someone else last time.  And I'd like to reiterate that I never said those words quoted above.  Anyway, back to the phone call with Danny, he asked me what paint I'd purchased, and I told him PP Pure Performance.  He told me that was bad paint and he never would have told me to buy that.  At this point I started getting upset because not only was the job getting messed up, not only was Danny being rude to me on the phone, but now I had apparently bought bad paint, and it wasn't cheap ($50 per gallon).  I bought it even though he told me to buy cheap paint because I figured it was good quality (apparently price doesn't necessarily mean good quality) and because it was the same paint we used on our 3rd bedroom the last time and this way all the bedrooms would match.  Anyway, I told him that I know he didn't tell me to buy it, but I had specifically called to ask what paint I should buy and he said it didn't really matter, so this was upsetting to be told that my choice was bad.  Danny then told me that I was giving him really "bad vibes" and that this just wasn't going well, and that usually he has no problems with customers (implying that this was all my fault) and that he feels like I'm trying to put this "all on him."  At this point I wanted to cancel the job, but I needed this job done the next day, so I told Danny that apparently we'd miscommunicated and that just happens sometimes.  I said I still wanted to do the job, but by the way he was talking, it seemed to me like he wanted to cancel the job.  He said no, he just doesn't understand how this was messed up so badly.  He then said that he would try to find another guy to come out and he himself would come out the first hour of work to help move furniture and tape off.  I said that would be fine.  The next day, Danny and Jess and another guy showed up.  They got to work right away.  They did a test patch to see if I needed 2 coats or just 1 in the rooms.  I needed to go get another gallon of paint and Danny called PP for me to get me his discount ($10 less).  He even asked PP if they'd give the discount on the paint I'd already bought but they said no.  At least he tried.  Danny had to leave after an hour, but that was ok as he'd told me when I scheduled the job that he couldn't come out himself on a Saturday.  The other 2 guys were there from 9am to 5pm and did a wonderful job.  They moved the furniture, they removed and replaced the blinds, they even recaulked the windows, they cleaned up when they were done, they worked solidly the whole time, and they were very pleasant.  Personally, I'd use Jess again if he takes independent contracts - he's at 512-771-8544.  I would not use Danny.  I think he just didn't pay much attention to this job, and when the details got messed up, instead of just saying their was a misunderstanding and fixing it, he blamed me.  I believe he tried to make things right, but he was so rude to me on the phone that I would not use him again."
