"WOW! What a great group of professionals. We can really sing the praises of Pinckard Landscaping Service for the job they did on our front lawn and flowerbeds. We give them ten stars (on the five-star scale). We met initially with Sandy Rogers who was very helpful in outlining our ideas for a low maintenance, Texas heat tolerant plants for our flowerbeds. She made several great plant selections and had a book of pictures of the various plants in case we weren’t familiar with them. We also had a section of our front yard that needed to be cleared and covered with St. Augustine sod. During the sixteen years we’ve lived here, the front hedges and other plants have grown out of control and some serious removal work was needed. The bid was very reasonable for the amount of work involved. Sandy and her crew arrived right on schedule and began work immediately. Each member of the work crew knew exactly what they were to do and they worked very efficiently. Sandy was there to oversee the work and assure each plant was placed according to the plan. We were pleased she was on-site so that any questions or issues could be resolved immediately. Thanks to her advance planning, there were none. They cleared all the old plants, flowers and soil from our flowerbeds, then put in fresh, clean soil. Next, they rototilled the beds to assure a good mix of soil in the beds and a welcoming environment for the new plants to grow. The crew exhibited extreme care for the rest of the lawn by placing plywood planks over the grass for the wheelbarrows of dirt and mulch to follow. They also placed covers down for the mounds of dirt and mulch unloaded for the job. The crew was very careful to pick up any debris as they worked. After they finished the job, they had us run the sprinklers to be sure nothing had been disturbed during the project. They cleaned up everything and it looked perfect. Should we need more landscaping work done at a future date, Pinckard Landscaping will definitely be our first choice. Their knowledge, integrity and professionalism are stellar. "They installed a French drain, capture basin, top soiled, and laid sod. Water is still resting on surface in some areas which is a little concerning, but work looks great. Nice people."

"Branden did a phenomenal job on our project! We wanted him to remove our mulch and dead plants in our flower beds and replace it with a dry scape scene. He was very helpful with coming up with ideas and even used AI to digitally show us the design prior to agreeing to move forward. Additionally we wanted to add some sod. He had great communication, was here when he said he would be and finished a day sooner than expected! We are very happy with him and his crews and will use him for future projects! Very respectful and professional company!"

"I initially called Excalibur and 2 other companies on 01/15 to schedule appointments for work estimates. Clayton, the owner, called me back within 5 minutes to schedule a time that was convenient for me. That was a good sign. The other 2 companies use salesmen to do their estimates. Clayton came the next day for the estimate and sent me a written estimate via email on the morning of 01/18. I waited until the next day to make my decision because I was waiting for another company to arrive to make their estimate. Ultimately, I went with Excalibur because of the price and I felt like Clayton was someone who I could work with. His estimate was roughly $1500 to $4000 less than the other companies. He also offers a 5 year warranty compared to only 1 year from his competitors. Work began on 01/21 and roughly 75% of the fence was replaced that day. They were conscientious of our neighbor who has dogs and replaced that entire portion of the fence first. On 01/22 they returned and removed part the gate and set a large post that was needed for the automatic gate that would be installed later. No other work was done this day due to weather and their other work commitments. On 01/23 they returned and finished setting the post and replaced some more of the fence. The weather was still not cooperating. On 01/24 they completed the fence and built the metal framework for the gate. On 01/25 they completed the installation of the gate and installed the automatic gate actuator. The construction of the gate took a little longer than expected and was inconvenient since we couldn't put our vehicles in the garage, which is located in the rear of the house; but this delay was due mostly to the weather. Clayton did well to communicate when they would be there. Since installation we did have an issue with the gate randomly opening on its own. We thought it was possibly due to interference from nearby neighbor's garage/gate openers. A crew returned twice within a few days and the problem was corrected. Overall, we are very pleased with the improvements that were done and the response to the small problems that arose."

FAQs for sod installation projects in Mineral Wells, TX

Seeding costs less up front, but you’ll wait months—and sometimes a full season—for the grass to fill in. Sod costs more per square foot, yet it gives you an instant, usable lawn the day it’s installed and needs far less care during the first year.

If speed and early curb appeal matter, the higher sod price is often worth it; if you’re watching every dollar and don’t mind the wait, seed can still be a smart play.

Start by sketching your lawn and breaking it into rectangles or circles. Measure each section, multiply length by width, and then add all the sections together for the total square footage. Standard sod rolls are two feet by 1.5 feet, and one pallet covers 450 square feet.

Divide your total area by 450 to see how many pallets you need, then round up—extras come in handy for cutting around curves or mistakes. Still unsure? A local sod supplier or installer can confirm your math before you order.

Most sod grips the soil within 10 to 14 days. During that stretch, keep foot traffic to a minimum and mow only if the grass gets tall. After two weeks, the roots should be strong enough for light use, but wait six weeks before heavy play or frequent mowing. Giving the grass that short honeymoon helps it anchor firmly and sets the stage for a durable, healthy lawn.

Give your new lawn two full weeks before any foot traffic, then stick to light use only. Hold off on vigorous play, parties, or regular mowing until the six-week mark so the roots can dig deep. Keep watering on schedule and watch for any dry patches. A little patience now means stronger turf and fewer repairs later.

Keep an eye on color, moisture, and even growth. Fresh sod should stay uniformly green; brown spots or gaps hint at dry soil or poor contact. Water deeply at least once a day for the first week (more in hot weather) and back off gradually after the roots take. Avoid heavy foot traffic until the grass feels firmly anchored. Quick attention to trouble spots now prevents costly patches later.

Aim for spring or early fall when daytime temps hover between 55°F and 80°F. Mild weather and consistent moisture help the roots knit quickly. Laying sod in midsummer can stress the grass, while frozen winter soil blocks rooting altogether.

If you must install outside the ideal window, budget extra time for watering and tending to the turf. Choosing the right season makes the job easier and the lawn tougher.
