"Mr. Electric offered great services and competitive prices unfortunately we just couldn't afford to put a generator in at the time, due to a few other projects we had going on at the time. We will be contacting Mr. Electric again once we are ready to put one in"

First let me start with the fact that the work required to do the job ended up over the estimate, and they never haggled or complained about it. They just asked for what was estimated. They used quality materials and everything looked and worked great after the job was done. I have had no electrical problems in the house since they did the work. The fact they handled the permits, scheduling with the electric company and the awful government electrical inspector for our area was a huge relief.
The Estimate and Work We have a lot of electrical equipment. The subpanel where most of our important circuits were was hissing and vibrating and making a buzzing sound. Circuits were blowing all the time. After Wayne, the owner, patiently listened to my ideas for what I wanted to have done to fix the problem, he offered a solution that actually would fix my problem lol. Wayne was energetic, VERY knowledgeable and pleasant to talk too. His employee's have impeccable manners and work ethic.
The job required us to be ready to be without power for half the day. Everything went fine. If they had a problem they just worked through it . Our house had a lot of honeydos in the electrical wiring, so they kept running into problems getting it done correctly.

Nitpicks and Complaints The large, thick cable between the meter and the main panel was changed. It came out the bottom of the meter before, and the new work had it coming out of the side. The old cable was left in place, sticking out of the aluminum siding by around 2-3 inches. This should have had white outdoor caulk around it. It did not, I had to buy some and caulk it up myself to prevent pests from entering the garage. UPDATE 24JUL12 : Larry's Electric was doing more work on our home as a subcontractor to an HVAC install that involved an exterior power line being run from the main panel to the compressor when they saw this part of their old work. They removed the old power line that was left in place and weather proofed it with a sanded exterior finish. They got that done before I could mention it to them before they left.
Miscellaneous I had a previous job done by Larry's Electric to fish and install a circuit for a new dishwasher. While there I asked their opinion about a wiring fault error indicator from a line conditioner/battery backup in the basement outlets. I was asking for another estimate. They climbed up on the desks and fixed the two outlets for free on the way out.
When our larger electrical problem started and I called, someone came out and worked on the panel wiring, tightening the connections inside. I was planning on paying for the visit but the guy was in and out in 10 minutes and did not accept payment for the work. I think these two actions speak about the morals and quality of Larry's Electric in a positive way.
The only ugly problem from start to finish was the government electrical inspector. He is the last step of the work, it appears. He was hours late, parked sidways in the driveway with his radio going, and rang our doorbell while having a conversation on his cell. I open the door and here is someone with the manners of a rapper talking on his phone with his back to me. I closed the door while he was acting out. The 'inspection' seemed to involve one sticker on the meter and him pointing out other stuff around the main panel which he was threatening to fail on the inspection. I think it was because I closed the door while he was on his phone. If you get work done, expect something like this from the county representitive."

"I fell for a computer scam where the scammer claimed to be with a computer service firm contracted by Microsoft to repair a dangerous flaw with Windows 10.  I was suspicious, but let them access my computer remotely.  I hung up when they started talking about offering to protect my computer for a price.  The Microsoft website describes these scams.   I was worried that my computer was compromised so I called ATR and had them check my computer for maleware.  I had to wait a day or two to get an appointment, but they contacted me at the scheduled time and performed the work remotely and efficiently.  The ATR rep was courteous and  and willing to spend time answering questions beyond the minimum required to service the computer.  This is the second time I have used ATR and have been pleased both times.

FAQs for generator repair projects in Morley, MI

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
