"Level 5 arrived within the time window provided and quickly began to go to work. Within minutes Chris realized that he did not have any materials to provide a dust barrier while they did their work (apparently the materials were somewhere else, and drywall work is very dusty). I was able to provide him with some plastic to use and they draped the door to the bathroom.
The work on drywall appeared to proceed quickly with Chris and his son bringing in drywall and putting it up on the walls. As this is a bathroom that is split between new and old construction and includes wall stud placement from previous but now removed windows, the placement of studs are not ideal for drywall installation.
As I observed their work, it became clear that Level 5 had forgotten more than just plastic to serve as a dust barrier. They were also walking up and down my tiled porch and interior hardwood floors without any coverings on the porch or floor. I had to pull my oriental rug out of the entry way because they were tracking drywall dust on it every time they walked the door. I did not have any re-course on the hardwood floors in the hallway other than sending them home, so I hoped for the best when clean up came.
Interestingly enough, my tile contractor arrived while Chris and team were working, and was appalled by the lack of floor protection that Level 5 had provided. He thought it was completely unprofessional and that Level 5's action were damaging both the tile porch and definitely the hardwood floor. The dust materials are abrasive, and do damage hardwood floor finishes.
The recessed ceiling cans for the LED lights were filled not to the outside of the cans, but inside to the LED lights. I will have to clean out all the drywall mud so that the LED lights can move up/down to attached to their bezels. Perhaps they are not familiar with these new types of lights, but it should have been obvious that filling inside the can is not proper technique.
At the end of the day, the crew did some cleanup. They pulled out a broom and swept the bathroom and hallway, and washed down the porch. And collected their check and left. Their cleanup was very superficial...they did not have the equipment to do it right and I resigned myself to cleaning up after they left. What I did not see initially was how much work that meant. Not only did we have to clean the floor multiple times (vacuum, dry mop, wet mop twice) to get the drywall dust out, but their use of the 'dust barrier' was such that it was not much of a barrier at all. We had dust throughout the house, and needed to dust all of the first floor counter-tops and furniture and clean all the floors. Overall, we spent more than 5 hours cleaning up for 7 hours of Level 5's work.
While I appreciate Level 5's responsiveness to my quote request and getting to my job quickly, I can't recommend them for anyone doing a remodel within an existing house. Their hygiene practices are possibly appropriate for new construction and maybe a garage, but I would not let them into my house again. And I would not hire them to do my garage because I think their rates are too high for 'garage' work.
By the way, my tile contractor had his crew in my house today...no worries or clean up on my part. That is what I would expect, and I think that is a reasonable expectation."
