"I cannot speak highly enough of Tom and Brad Green of Colonial Restorations. We have lived in our antique house for 16 years now, and like most old homes, some of its previous repairs were good, some not so good. Tom Green worked on this house for its previous owners, and his work was, by far, the best in the house. So, we continued to use Colonial - Tom, then Tom and Brad - as we learned the ropes about caring for an old house - our first house, old or new. Over the years, they have replaced sills and posts and beams, and rebuilt parts of our loose stone foundation. Most recently, they replaced the last original posts in our basement, (one of which was a tree trunk still with bark on it), including pouring new custom footings, in advance of our finally cementing the dirt floor. The work here is never easy - nothing is level, nothing is square - but the Greens' end result has always been beautiful - strong and made to last. Their prices are fair and without hidden costs....maybe not the lowest bid you might get, but you know it's a real bid that they will stand behind. They triage projects for us, giving us an idea of what other items will likely need attention in the next few years. We're not done with this house yet....we've never won the lottery, and there's always another repair..... and plan to use them again soon. I feel confident knowing that the next owners of this house, whoever they might be, will see the quality of the work and know that we cared enough to have the right people help us with the ongoing repair and maintenance of a 275+ year old house. I am a real person, a real customer, with no ties to the company, and was more than happy to write this review."

"We got three estimates from three different painting companies to paint our house. Prior painters had not prepped the house adequately, and so there was lots of peeling paint, on top of layers and layers of old paint. In addition, there were some rotted sills on a couple of windows that needed to be replaced before they could be painted. Our estimate appointment was at 8 am and Tom Lopotosky showed up right on time. The three estimates we received from the three painting contractors were all in the same $12,000.00 ballpark. We decided to go with LOPCO for two reasons: The first was that LOPCO has their own construction contractors that would be able to do the repair work (One painting company told me I would have to find my own carpenter to do the woodwork. No thank you.) The second reason was that LOPCO was the only one that offered a FIVE year warranty on their work. They also offered a selection of payment options, and offer the free services of a color-consultant, Susanne.
We signed the contract with Tom that stated that the work would start no later than June 8th, 2015 and be finished no later than June 26th. Well, the actual work didn't start until June 22nd. I understand, however, that outdoor painting is very weather-dependent, so you need to be flexible in the time-table you chose.
Also, the first step was power-washing the house. The fellow who did the washing did not cover my hydrangea bushes, and the solution (a mild cleaning solution) burned some of the leaves and blossoms. I would have preferred that he cover them, or warned me that the solution might burn tender plants so that I could have covered them. The good news is, the bushes have fully recovered.
Having said that,I have nothing but THE HIGHEST PRAISE for the team that prepped and painted the house. Mike (the job-site manager), Aster, Miguel, and Mark (the door specialist), plus the carpenters who were called in to replace additional rotted molding and trim that was discovered later in the process (The added work was an additional $3000 expense. Tom DID warn us that it may happen, particularly in an older house such as ours.), were ALL friendly, courteous, and took great pride in their work.
They began by doing a very thorough scraping of the house, and once they determined that the paint was not lead based, they also sanded and feathered the edges so there were no "islands" where the new paint went over the old paint. They used two different types of primer on the part of the house that gets the most exposure to the elements. They then primed the rest of the house and completed the painting. We changed the color of the body of the house to a beautiful dark gray, left the trim white, then added black shutters and glossy red doors. The painters had to be very precise and particular when they were painting the trim.
The house looks gorgeous, and we receive lots of compliments from our neighbors. I encourage anyone who is looking for a house painter, especially someone who has an older home, to hire LOPCO. They will not be disappointed.

"Kfgconcrete is an excellent company that strives to fully satisfy. This was the only company that truly listened to my desires and made sure to explain all possible options. Kevin was patient with all my questions (and I had a ton of them)! The end was everything and more than I was hoping for. While it was not the cheapest pricewise, the cost was worth it in the end, and you get what you pay for. You made my family very happy and proud of our walkway. Thank you!‎"

"Within days of purchasing the deal, I received the instructions and paper to draw my table templates. The table has 2 drop leaves plus 2 additional leaves that can be inserted in the table. The templates were pretty easy to draw. The finished pads were delivered in a very short time. They fit the table and each of the 4 leaves perfectly and magnetically lock together to keep them aligned when on the table. A year and a half later, I still love these pads."

"I had Distinctive Painting paint to entire upstairs of my home. The job consist of all the ceilings, walls, trim, doors, baseboard and minor dry wall repair. Mario did a fantastic job on the trim, I was surprised he could paint that close to our hardwood floors and carpets without touching any of them. He correct all the cracks and repaired all screw holes in the drywall and the walls and ceiling looks great. The price was comparable to other quotes that I got. Overall my wife and I were very pleased with his work and will use again."

"The clapboard on my house is the original wood from when the house was built in 1925. So you can imagine the sanding and prep work that needed to go into the project. The paint job looks incredible The results as well as the pricing exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend JMC Painting Company. Very honest, clean and reliable. Very happy with the work and I am now using JMC for interior paint projects"

"We recently had a complete roof replacement. Before proceeding, we did comprehensive research of area companies and Vista came out on top, with good reason! All appointments were not only on time but were extremely punctual. We met first with Product Specialist Holly, who was enthusiastic, very knowledgeable and helpful. While at our home assessing the proposed job, Project manager Rick explained the entire process in layman's terms. The day of the job, Project Supervisor Marc arrived early and went over the entire job with the crew. All company representatives left us with a business card with their cell #'s to call if we required anything. The installation crew was amazing. They arrived early and began immediately. They were no nonsense, very focused and, worked like a well oiled machine. All Vista team members were polite and respectful of my special request to be cognizant around some of my more cherished trees & shrubs. Vista was fastidious in their care for my home and lawn, not one speck of debris was left behind. Vista, the installation crew, company representatives, everyone, exceeded our expectations. Vista stands behind their work and products. If you wish to relax after a major home improvement project knowing the job was done correctly, you will want to consider Vista. Dan & Kim Belchertown"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in New Bedford, MA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
