"Kenny did an excellent job on our patio! Not only was he one of the most competitive prices, he also worked his butt off! He did a great job start to finish and really earned his pay. We would hire him again!"

"S&M Concrete did an excellent job on my requested job, with minimal involvement by me.  I spoke to them on the phone and let them know what I wanted (rebuilding of front steps), and S&M dropped off a bid in my mailbox, which I accepted. <br /> I appreciated the ease of process - I explained what I wanted, got a hassle-free quote, and when I went ahead, the job was done in an excellent way.  The bid was $200 more than someone else's estimate, but I think the hassle-free nature and the professionalism justified the premium.  I'm confident that S&M concrete will get the job done *correctly*, which is by far the most important issue in any home contracting arrangement.  They might be a little bit more expensive than others, but I appreciate the peace of mind.  <br />"

"My mother needed to have a door replaced and a securitly light installed. Gary showed up to give an estimate and very detailed instructions on what we needed to purchase the very same day we called him. After the items were purchased, he was there that day to install everything. He spent a great deal of time making everything just right. We appreciated the time he took, not only on the installation, but giving us the specifics on what to purchase so things would be right. We will definitely call Gary again for future needs"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Norway, IA

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
