"I hired Gatt Floors to refinish some very old hardwood floors in the house I recently purchased. They gave a very reasonable quote, and I suppose you get what you pay for. First let me say, they are very easy to get in contact with. Bill showed up for an estimate the same day I called him. At first I noticed little things, like how the wood putty used to fill small gaps did not even come close to matching the wood around it. Then I noticed that not all of the paint had been sanded off the floors (I was specifically told not to worry while I was painting one of the rooms). But then I noticed the big one: there was a huge crack in my drywall! Now, I am a reasonable human, accidents happen. But the fact that Bill left halfway through the job, told me he would come back and check the work, and STILL didn't tell me I had a massive crack in my wall is just poor customer service. Not only that, there were sections of the floor with 3x4in gaps that he filled with wood putty. Wood putty is used for small repairs, not gaping holes in the floor. Besides those spots, the floors actually turned out rather beautiful. I can't say I will use Gatt Floors again, but I'm not calling anyone to redo them either."

"We needed an old oak hardwood floor repaired and refinished in a room and hallway. Phil's team came on time and finished on time. The results are incredible. The floors look brand new. Also, I wanted to note they took the time to clean up the work space after each phase. Phil's quote was one of 3 and was competitive."

"Tom from Vo Flooring was immediately responsive to my initial request to come and take a look at our hardwood flooring project. He was very communicative, on time and provided good information and insight to make sure the project would be a success. When his team arrived on the day of installation, they were very professional, efficient and quality craftsmen. They took the time to make sure the new hardwood floor would not only look good in the main part of the room but also took the time to fit the pieces perfectly around existing doorway trim, as well as against the walls where baseboard would cover the flooring. We are quite happy with the final outcome and would highly recommend Tom and his team."

FAQs for wood flooring refinish projects in Norwell, MA

The hardest wood floor finish is aluminum oxide, but it only comes on prefinished boards. If you want something durable you can add after installation, acid-cured is your best bet. The key to the longevity of any type of wood floor is a maintenance coat when a traffic pattern begins to show in high traffic areas.

Moisture-cured urethane is the most durable finish for homes with pets. However, It contains a lot of (VOCs) that can aggravate pets and people, especially at first. If you’re looking for a low-VOC alternative, water-based polyurethane is your best bet.

Bona sells several highly-rated polyurethane hardwood floor finish products, typically through small, local distributors. Brands like DuraSeal or Minwax also rank well for durability and ease of application. They are available at businesses such as Walmart and Amazon.

You have to seal unfinished hardwood floors to protect them from scratches and stains. The frequency depends on the type, but in general it’s ideal to refinish them between four and six times in their lifetime. This comes out to about every seven to 10 years.

Refinishing hardwood floors costs $1,100 to $2,400.

Wood stain adds a color to the surface. A finish adds a level of shine (e.g. matte, low-gloss, high-gloss) and seals the grain to protect against damage. Some companies, such as Minwax, offer products that do both at once.
