Small jobs welcome

"Fabian was fabulous! He was professional, friendly and did everything with exceptional quality. You can tell right away that he is very thorough, detailed and takes great pride in his work. Fabian repaired all the rotted trim and the split and poor condition clapboards on my old house. I could not have been more pleased. He scraped off the moss from my roof and caulked areas. He did those extras just to make sure everything was done correctly. I will definitely hire him again."

"Working with Wes and his wife Aimee was a pleasure from the very first minute. Both are very professional and courteous - so refreshing and different that it made an immediate impression. You can have complete confidence in Wes to get the job done - done well and done on time. Now that I have found A&W Carpentry there is no reason to look any further. The other reviewers were all right. You'll see!

"Brian and his team did a very thorough job replacing the roof. The team stripped off the old roof quickly and kept the surrounding area clean. Brian paid particular attention to getting the job done in a way that would prevent damage from ice dams. The lead flashing he did around the chimney looks like it was done by a real artisan. New gutters, downspouts, and leaf-guards were installed with high quality materials an attention to detail."

"It was such a pleasure working with SSA Home Improvement. They finished the job according to schedulle, Very professional company. The owner was on site making sure the job was being done correctly. The price was fair and the quality was above what I expected. I already recommended this company to all my friends and family. I will be hiring them again in the fall."

"It went WELL! These guys are huge helps! They arrive faster than promised, they charge what they promise. There are no surprise charges like with a dumpster! I am now using a BullBag in CT and one in RI. I, alone, can keep this company busy!!!! They are awesome to work with! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM! One of their managers, Vicki, was so nice, pleasant and patient with me. I was frazzled with all of the damage my property received from the hurricane. She was great!"

"Excellent job pruning and trimming shrubs that had not been touched in 2 years. Looks wonderful now! Excellent communication regarding a delay in arriving on site - they really were concerned about keeping us informed. All debris was cleaned up and hauled away. Would definitely recommend this small business."

"I can't say enough good things about my experience with Rustic Renovations. They were referred to me by a friend and from the very first phone call to the finished product it was perfect. Christine was friendly and very knowledgeable and helped me come up with the design for my entertainment center. Her workmanship is top notch and it came out even better than I envisioned. Her prices are extremely reasonable and I will be recommending her to everyone I know and will be hiring her again for my next project."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Norwich, CT

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
