"Years of overgrowth and a few missed opportunities left us scratching our heads after moving into a house with a sunken garden / walkout basement patio. Good referrals for Jon sparked an on-site ideation session and it was clear he had both the vision and the skillsets to transform our space. The project was massive and ended up being multiple phases; which Jon did forecast in those initial meetings. We began talking at the height of the pandemic, so flexibility and patience was key to mutual success. We're glad we collaborated so heavily through all the phases! It's now a super special, unique space that seems like it's always been there! List of projects embedded in the phases: new retention wall, excavation behind existing walls, excavation of bottom level and regrade, brick + flagstone patio, custom pergola, stone and walkway lighting, new patio on upper level, serving table, additional staircase, fire pit, planters with topsoil and mushroom compost, trees and shrubs, downspout extensions, regraded and relaid flagstone walkway from drive/lane."

"It went great. Matt and the guys got in and removed old concrete, poured the patio and driveway area just the way I wanted it and were generally nice to have around. They came back the next day and cut the lines to stop any cracks that will invariably form. When I do the rest of the driveway, I'll be sure to call Matt."

"Eric Hess was extremely easy to work with and very professional. He was quick to come to my house and give me a detailed estimate for the work that was needed. He thoroughly explained the issues that I had in an easy to understand manner. Once they started work, he and his crew made sure to cover the areas of the roof they would be walking on with pieces of carpet to prevent damage to my shingles. We had very unique textured bricks that would have been impossible to exactly match. Eric found a close replacement and even sent a load back to his supplier when he didn't think that they were the correct color. I'm no masonry or chimney expert, but I believe that he really knows his stuff. He rebuilt the crown much stronger than the previous one and made sure to use 4 inches of concrete, and not the cheaper mortar that was used before that led to serious cracks and water leakage. The finished chimney looks great and matches as well as can be expected with our very unique brick type. I have every confidence that the chimney he built is very solid and well-built and will fare much better than the old one. I highly recommend Hess Masonry. <br>"

"Did the work on time, as scheduled, and within the estimated cost. The work he did looks excellent. He work quickly to fit us into his schedule because it was the end of the season and very cold weather was approaching which would've made it not possible to pour concrete."

"A different company was trying to convince me that my basement needed about $27,000 worth of basement repairs done; Mr. Halfar looked at the same issue and said "put some caulk on it and wait a few months to see whether it's an active problem or a seasonal shifting." His estimates on how to repair things if it did need repairs were around $3,000. I was really impressed by his honesty, his knowledge, and his willingness to take an approach that involved assessing the issue rather than jumping immediately to extremely expensive repairs. Right now I'm in the "wait and see" phase of the assessment, but if it turns out it does need repairing I'm definitely calling Mr. Halfar back. <br />"

"Whenever you tear into an older home (37 year old house) you are never quite sure what you will find. Plus, as the project took shape and we were no longer looking a a drawing, we changed our mind about a couple small things. The MJ crew was great to work with about making changes to ensure we were happy with the finished project. Our home did not have the proper plumbing for the bathroom (instead of under the floor, the sewage lines ran out the wall to the septic tank) so half of our project cost was for tearing up the concrete floor and installing plumbing that should have been installed when the house was built. The project took a little longer than anticipated but Jeb and his crew saw that by the end of the first week we were able to move the washer & dryer back so we could do some laundry without having to run to the laundrymat. Thankfully, a friend had an appliance dolly he could loan us for the 3 week duration which made it easy to move the washer and dryer in and out when workers were coming and needed to be in that area."
