"Nick and Dori were wonderful to work with! They were kind and responsive and so, so thorough. Our radon levels were super high and they were able to install the mitigation system efficiently and professionally. I highly recommend them for mitigation, but also just for testing and any other questions even if you donâ t need mitigation. Overall, a wonderful experience. I wish no one had radon problems, but if you do, youâ re lucky to get to work with this company."

"During the pre-purchase inspection of our new home, we conducted a radon test which came back with a level slightly over 5. Given that the recommended remediation level by the state is 4, we decided to implement a remediation system and solicited several estimates from both local providers and a few that were further away. In spite of being advised by both our inspector and realtor that we might reasonably expect to spend approximately $1K for a remediation system, estimates that came in ranged as high as $1800. One local provider's initial response to an email inquiry, in fact, was $1500. Steve came out for an estimate, arriving on time - which was appreciated, as many of the other contractors have not been. His assessment was professional and thorough, and he took the time to both ask detailed questions about the house's construction as well as detail the options we had for placing the system and its exhaust components. His estimate for the work was $1095, significantly lower than our other options.  <br /> Based on his conduct and the price, we selected him to perform the work. Once again, he arrived on time, got right to work and in a few short hours the system was online. He explained the functioning of the system in detail, listed the gauges to check performance and gave an idea of the estimated lifespan for the components with moving parts. The work was performed for the amount estimated, no haggling over overruns needed.  <br /> He also left a prepaid radon test kit with instructions for its use. After waiting the allotted period to allow the system to work, we conducted the test. The results subsequently came back as passed; our radon level has gone from over 5 to less than 0.4, well under the recommended remediation level by the state.  <br /> In short, we were quite pleased with both his conduct and the system he installed. I would recommend him for radon remediation work without hesitation. <br />"

"this is the second home inspection we had terry perform in less than 4 weeks, his inspection provided us the info we needed to make an informed decision on a home that we were about to purchase, which would have been a big mistake. he is excellent, through, informative, educational. cannot say enough about his professional approach. <br />"

"They originally installed a reverse osmosis water filtration system. It pushes the water through these microfilm filters. We have well water so we high arsenic levels in our well. They do it once a year. We've had to have them come out on a weekend and service, that is about $100. This time it was expensive. It was a major replacement. They're expensive but they're the only ones in the area that do what they do."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"The job was to remove the mold that had formed near three disconnected vent pipes that passed through the attic and then to reconnect the pipes. They were prompt and remarkably tidy. Because they were dealing with mold spores they completely sealed off the room that gave them access to the attic. (Of course, because the room was sealed off while they worked and because I would have had to borrow a ladder to access the attic after they left, I have never actually laid eyes on the work they did! I believe that the work was done as promised.)"

"Dan performed air testing for Radon, and water testing for a wide variety of possible contaminants as part of pre-purchase building inspection. Responsiveness was fabulous, results were quick and very easy to understand, including very clear information on what the various EPA limits are for each item. The realtor said he's the best provider of this service he's ever seen, and he's been in the business for at least 10 years."

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Portland, ME

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
