"They did a fantastic job, and really went above and beyond. At first, I graded them as a "B" for punctuality because it took several weeks for them to make it over to my house and take care of it, but this was only because the weather this fall and winter was so terrible that Scott got backed up and couldn't get here right away. I wasn't really an emergency case or anything, so it made sense to wait, and in the meantime, he was kind enough to send some guys over to put a tarp over the leaky spots (free of charge!). So they really shouldn't be penalized for something that was beyond their control, especially since they did extra work for free to keep the rain out until they could officially remedy the situation. (The tarp job itself was done well; shortly after they put it up, we had an insanely windy storm, and it stayed in place and kept the rain out through that and several other storms that followed.) Scott seems like a really good guy, with many qualities that I appreciate in a business owner: based on the limited interaction I had with him, it appears he’s practical, he listens, he’s straightforward, he thinks carefully about the issue and considers both the big picture and the details; he explains technical subjects clearly, in layman’s language, without trade jargon; he’s flexible and open-minded about working in slightly unusual or atypical situations, and he approaches projects individually, considering what the customer needs, rather than just applying standard fixes that might not always work for every home and every homeowner. (What I’m trying to say, without saying it, is that he’s able to “think outside the box,” but I hate that expression as much as I admire the people who do it.) I feel he gave my weird roof a lot of thought in terms of the best and most affordable way to address the problem. It's difficult - sometimes impossible - to know what's causing a leak until you open up the roof to see for yourself; until then, you can't necessarily predict what needs to be fixed or replaced, or give anything but an educated guess to estimate which supplies are needed, or how many hours it'll take to fix it. I had talked to other roofers who were reluctant to even look at the leaky areas unless I committed to getting a larger scale job done, which would make it worthwhile for them to deal with the skylights, etc. I completely understand that, and I know I would benefit from fixing the whole thing, but I'm very very very broke, so I was VERY appreciative of the fact that Scott was willing to give me an estimate based on an hourly rate - and allow me to choose between three different options. I opted for the most hours - 8 hours of work, three workers - in the hopes that they could fix the leaks and still have a little extra time to patch up the areas that past roofers had done poorly, or that time and weather had compromised. Under the circumstances, it was nice to feel as though I actually had some choice, and decision-making power! When Scott's schedule had cleared up a bit, he gave me about a week's notice that they'd be there, and lo and behold, they were! So many contractors/workers show up unannounced or not at all or at weird erratic hours...and often I feel like I have to hold their hands and tour them around and be available to explain stuff about which I have only the weakest understanding - or just BE there - but these guys came over, said hi, and went to work. All they needed was a power outlet. They were pleasant, and polite, and friendly and professional. They finished up within the timeframe agreed upon. They weren't even that noisy! They did manage to cover every possible source of the leaks that they could find by applying sealant and flashing in the affected areas and areas above that would provide a path for water. With the leftover time, they tidied up and fixed the other problem spots, and added trim and flashing in spots that had been neglected. They worked over the time I'd paid for in order to finish up. They cleaned everything up, and they did NOT then proceed to tell me how effed up the roof had been, or what morons my previous roofers were, or what an idiot I’d been for hiring anyone who wasn’t them. No long boring speeches about how THEY would have done it. No mansplaining. They didn’t make me feel like Mr. Blandings. Such a refreshing change! Also, I didn't have to worry about giving them a payment that day, which was wonderful - Scott said I had 10 days upon completion to send the payment, and is also flexible with payment methods. (Again- I often have contractors who want payment at the end of every day - sometimes in advance for supplies - and often ask for cash only, or at least a check, which defeats the whole purpose of credit cards, the point of which is to cover unexpected roof emergencies!) I can’t swear that every detail was permanently resolved, because I personally did not climb onto my roof to look at what was done, and if I had, I wouldn’t know what was done, because I am not a roofer or a carpenter. I do know a) that the roof has not leaked since the day the tarp went up, despite awful weather, and b) all the past sloppy work and exposed nails and floppy, torn shingles and missing flashing appears to have been remedied. It looks tidy and sturdy. So, I’m giving them an A – if the roof caves in tomorrow, I’ll post an update."

"I highly recommend Andrew Porter Contracting for exceptional service and work. During a storm, we lost a few shingles from a dormer. Contacted on Friday, they came out the next day during the April snow storm and did the repair. They arrived exactly when they said, worked quickly, took away all debris and did a fantastic job."

"We met with Richard in July, reviewed the GAF Shingle options, and ultimately contracted to have our entire roof replaced in August (written contract to finish BEFORE Labor Day). Due to unusual late-Summer inclement weather, as well as the aftermath of the hurricanes down South, unbeknownst to me Richard and his crew contracted to help repair a # of roofs damaged in these storms (covered by Insurance.) Long story short, I followed up with Richard a number of times in later July and early August to confirm we were still on-schedule, and it usually took 3-4 days to hear something back on email or v-mail. So on timely follow-up, I rated Richard as "fair". That shared, I can't say enough about how professional Richard, Marcos (his crew chief) and their entire team was once the job was formally scheduled and started. They arrived promptly every day @ 7:00 a.m. (we gave our neighbors a heads up they'd be hearing some mild early morning noise), set up quickly and got to work! They took great pains to set a tarp system in place off the roof edge(s) so all debris coming off would fall onto our lawn--not our shrubs, rear deck, driveway or sidewalk. Every evening, they used a magnetic roller to ensure nails were picked up off our property and driveway, and they cleaned up the work site with all debris placed in their dumpster trailer, and put all ladders on the far side of the driveway, with all work tools and supplies covered. Aside from being prompt, organized and pleasant--the most important part is the finished product--and we couldn't be happier!!! Richie's Roofing used GAF Timberline shingles, and since we also spec'd other GAF accessories (i.e Tiger-Paw Synthetic Roofing felt, GAF Ice & water roof liner, Ridge vents, etc.) the new GAF roof is now warranted for 30+ years (some elements have a Limited Lifetime warranty). They also replaced the old flashing around our two (2) Chimney's with new Copper flashing, and it really looks great. In summary, though I wish the early communications had been a little more timely and frequent, our finished roof looks fantastic--and we heartily recommend Richie's Roofing to anyone in the area that is looking for quality roof repair or replacement at a fair price."

"Fantastic experience with this company, from the estimate to the final clean up. The work on our home and garage roofs was done quickly and efficiently. The crew cleaned up every day and left our property spic and span. The owner of the company kept tabs on the work and was available for questions when we had them. Great all around experience and a couple of good-looking new roofs. Great value for the money, too!"

"Daniel and another worker were on time, got right to work, and completed the job efficiently. They were very professional and pointed out a couple things they noticed on the roof. I’m happy with the job they did."

"Kris Perkins came out the day after I called her for an estimate. She spent a good half hour examining the roof closely. It was evident that it was probably smart to completely re-roof given the wear on our asphalt shingles, but she provided us with options all the same. She gave us separate estimates for: repair ($450), re-tiling over the existing shingle ($4,500), and tearing down the old shingle and replacing the roof ($7,320). We had bids as high as $14,000 for complete re-roofing of our home and garage, so her bids were very reasonable. I noticed that she uses highly rated Certainteed asphalt shingles for roofing. We did not end up using her because another excellent contractor had put in a low bid and was able to start right away. But I would definitely contact her again for work on our home. <br />"

FAQs for roofing installation & roof repair projects in Quinebaug, CT

An average Cape Cod roof-raising project requires approximately two to three months from start to finish. The timeline depends on several variables, including weather conditions, contractor availability, material delivery schedules, and the specific complexity of your home's structure. The process involves multiple phases, including demolition, framing, roofing, window installation, and interior finishing. Working with an experienced contractor who provides a detailed timeline can help set realistic expectations for the project duration.

While most Cape Cod homes can accommodate roof-raising modifications, each house requires individual structural assessment. Older homes may need foundation reinforcement or wall strengthening before supporting additional weight. Factors like the existing roof framing system, load-bearing wall placement, and overall structural integrity all influence feasibility. A qualified structural engineer should evaluate your specific property before proceeding with design plans. Additionally, local zoning ordinances may restrict maximum building height or architectural modifications in certain neighborhoods.

Temporary relocation is highly recommended during a Cape Cod roof raising project. The construction process involves removing portions of your existing roof, exposing interior spaces to potential weather damage, and creating significant noise and dust. Most homeowners find temporary accommodations for the two to three-month construction period, with relocation costs ranging from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on your housing choices. If staying with family or friends isn't possible, budget for short-term rental or extended-stay hotel expenses as part of your overall project cost.

Consider roof raising when you experience severely limited headroom throughout the second floor, find yourself constantly stooping under sloped ceilings, or have minimal usable floor space due to low ceiling heights. Other indicators include inadequate natural light, poor ventilation, and difficulty accommodating standard furniture in upstairs rooms. Simple renovations can improve an attic's appearance, but cannot create additional headroom without structural modifications. A complete roof-raising project makes more sense than cosmetic renovations if you're seeking genuine second-floor living space rather than just storage improvements.

Begin your search by seeking contractors with specific experience in Cape Cod structural modifications and dormer additions. Request detailed portfolios showing similar completed projects and ask for references from previous clients with comparable work. Verify that potential contractors hold appropriate licenses and insurance coverage and understand local building codes relevant to roof raising. Interview multiple candidates, comparing price quotes and their communication style, project approach, and proposed timeline. The ideal contractor should demonstrate a thorough understanding of Cape Cod architectural characteristics and structural requirements.
