"Had a leaky back porch roof that had been done in old fashion (nails) and bad masonry, and resulted in leaking that caused holes drywall to cave in section of porch roof. Called several roofers over months; they were either unable to do the job, charged excessive rates or unresponsive. Second City responded, provided a competitive quote quickly and (after some scheduling issues due to weather) completed the job as planned. They were respectful, answered questions and addressed concerns. No leaks in new roof (I know b/c we haven't fixed drywall yet). Also referred an AC guy who did good work as well - would use again."

"John and team were wonderful to work with from day 1. I live in a duplex down and had an issue of water leaking through the masonry and roof into my primary bedroom. Initially it was difficult for me to pinpoint what was causing the leak, but John was able to inspect the masonry and roof (roof is TPO and located under my deck) to identify the problem. They ended up patching the seams of my TPO roof and addressed some masonry issues. I also had them install a new Trex deck that I have been wanting. Everything looked great after they were finished! During the repairs John communicated with me every day and addressed my every question (I had many throughout the process). I would definitely recommend John to anyone who needs someone they can trust to do quality work that meets your specific needs."

"Simply put, you will NOT find a better, more honest, more helpful, more easy-to-work-with, reasonably priced contractor than John Lee and his crew at J & K Home Improvement & Restoration! We had a "complicated" set of circumstances when our home was damaged by a storm, last winter. The insurance company sent out an estimator to assess the damage and, after the company recommended J & K Home Improvement & Restoration, I was introduced to John Lee. I eventually learned that John also does estimates for a variety of insurance companies (because his company is so well regarded), and he patiently listened as I described the nuances associated with our house. During our initial consultation, he was able to clearly describe all of the steps that would be necessary and answer all of our questions. Long story short, not only was John able to address EVERY single concern and request that we had regarding the eventual repairs to the house (including roof, siding, and a window upgrade that would have cost much more if we had done it at a later time), but he spent plenty of extra time making sure that everything we had talked about was addressed to our 100% satisfaction! He was also able to persuade the insurance company to cover more complete repairs than was originally specified by the first adjuster! In addition, when we had an electrical "hiccup" associated with all the pounding on the walls, John quickly sent an expert electrician to locate and correct the problem. He absolutely could have passed those charges on to us because the failure wasn't due to any mistake on the part of his crew but, instead, he picked up the unanticipated expense himself. It was truly a pleasure to work with John! He made a difficult situation as easy to manage as possible, and we would strongly recommend J & K Home Improvement & Restoration to anyone who wants to hire a quality contractor that stands behind their work and well-earned reputation!"

"Had an old chimney that we needed removed, and the roof patched. As it happened, while deciding on when to do this, the chimney collapsed and left a hole in the roof a day before it was supposed to start raining for 3 days in a row. Called the guys at BUK Roofing to expedite and get the work they had quoted done immediately, and they were able to come out the very next day and take care of it. Most importantly, they did a fantastic job. I was also extremely appreciative about how clean they kept my place. Both Tom, the owner, and the other member of his crew were extremely professional. Will definitely be calling these guys next time I've got some roof work to do."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Rogers-park, IL

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
