This is Rupert and my team at Summit Deck Doctor. We offer Deck Finishing, Deck Repairs and Deck Build within 25 miles of Los Gatos. We know you have a choice and hope you will choose us! There are three things that make us different from other contractors: LOOKS BETTER, LASTS LONGER, JOB DONE. Here’s why: 1) LOOKS BETTER. a. We avoid lap marks where two layers overlap. Not every contractor understand the import of maintaining a wet edge to avoid these dark marks on your deck. B) we stain the edges of the boards so you don’t get “zebra stripes” – very visible and distracting drips down the sides of the boards (other contractors charge extra to fix this), c) we use lots of drop cloths to avoid spills (so no more careless mess below the deck). 2) LASTS LONGER. a). Rupert and Michael breathed new life into it! Rupert (company principle) is very responsive, and he was able to give a quick informal estimate based on some photos and I texted. This made it very easy to start working together right away. Now the deck looks beautiful, and they were able to stain our wooden deck furniture to match. Great makeover for our deck and lovely folks to work with!"

"I found Melvin by chance after looking for several contractors to paint our townhome (prices were outrageous, between 17k-35k) to paint a 1800sq ft place with very high ceilings in places. Painting was very reasonable at about $9500 plus materials (at about $3000). Their quality of work patching holes big and small, making cracks on the wall look like it never happened, and their attention to detail was unmatched while painting baseboards, door trims, walls and ALL our cabinetry (bathrooms and kitchen). Melvin is a perfectionist! I have never been able to say that about any painter. I know that if you are reading this it will be hard for you to grasp how great this company is. But let me give you peace of mind: YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. THEY HAVE LOADS of pictures of their work for reference. They also have the most awesome handyman (Josue) and the counter top guy (Marvin).. he was incredible and very skilled at refinishing 3 bathroom counter tops. They are very organized and clean up after themselves. I truly feel that I was the luckiest person to have found them and they turn my home into an absolute gem 💎. Please give them a chance. A single gallon of exterior paint covers approximately 350-400 square feet, which translates to eight to 12 standard-sized shutters, depending on their dimensions. Factors affecting coverage include shutter material, surface condition, and application method. Porous surfaces like weathered wood may require additional paint, while smooth vinyl surfaces might need less. Always purchase slightly more paint than your calculations suggest to avoid running short.
Each application method has distinct advantages. Spray painting creates a smooth, even finish and works well for louvered or detailed shutters, but requires more preparation to prevent overspray. Brushing allows for better control and paint penetration into crevices, though it takes longer and may show brush marks. Exterior shutters need repainting every four to seven years, though this varies based on climate conditions, sun exposure, and shutter material. Signs that indicate repainting is needed include fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling paint. Wood shutters in humid or rainy environments may require more frequent attention than those in drier climates. Regular inspections help identify when maintenance is needed before damage occurs.
Removing shutters before painting offers several advantages, including easier access to all surfaces and hardware. This approach allows for more thorough preparation and eliminates the risk of paint getting on surrounding surfaces. However, removal adds time to the project and presents challenges with second-story shutters. If safety concerns or hardware issues make removal difficult, on-site painting with proper masking and drop cloths is a viable alternative.
Painting shutters is significantly more economical than replacement when the underlying structure remains sound. With replacement costs ranging from $45 to $420 per shutter plus installation, repainting at $4 to $33 per shutter represents substantial savings. However, if shutters show significant structural damage, warping, or deterioration, replacement might prove more cost-effective long-term. The decision should balance current condition, desired appearance, and budget considerations.
