"It cost me $450+tax to clear the drain, which took less than half hour. I admit it was my ignorance that I did not ask specifically how much would be involved. I assumed they would charge more or less what the other pros told me. Mistake! They could have told me though. The technician was good and courteous, and he fixed my problem."

"Barbara graciously took a look at the leak when she came by to give us an estimate for a whole house water filter install. We called her back a week later to fix the leak. Barbara showed up on time and was up front about how she planned to fix the problem, any additional costs should the planned approach didn't work, and other alternatives. She was able to fix the leak in 30 mins and we no longer have to worry about water behind the walls."

"Chris gave me the price of sump pump replacement by phone and I agreed, but later realized that he overcharged me big time! He quoted $975, put in a new pump, which cost $165 online, and worked for about an hour or so. I also asked him to replace my bathroom faucet, Chris did the work, but had to come back, as the newly installed faucet was leaking. To sum it up, the work was done, but at a very high price. Customers should ask about the hourly labor cost and materials's price in advance."

"Would I hire again? Yes. I already have. I first contacted Herber plumbing for an estimate to move a gas line. #1, their reception/customer service is so friendly and pleasant. Knowledgeable AND not in a rush. Bob came out. He presented himself so professionally and friendly that we honestly didn’t feel the need for a 2nd opinion. He offered 2 scenarios of how the job could go, so there will be no surprises. The job is booked for this week, however, last week, all of the toilets in the house were backing up into the tubs! We called Herber (2nd time ever contacting) and a really nice guy came - I wasnt present - and resolved the clog. He cleaned any mess AND disinfected! He also took the time to open our cess pool valve to check its level and explain the system and how to care for it. Stand up company. The take pride in their work. I’ve been looking for a company to keep loyally. Really happy we found Herber. Reasonable prices. They’re worth it."

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Seaford, NY

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
